Poetics Of Security, Costas M. Constantinou Dec 1999

Poetics Of Security, Costas M. Constantinou

Costas M. Constantinou

On October 23, 1983, at around 6:20 A.M., there was a suicide attack against the U.S. Marine
battalion in Beirut. A lorry-van loaded with an estimated four thousand pounds of explosives was
driven and exploded inside the military headquarters, killing 260 American marines and resulting in
the withdrawal of the multinational force from Lebanon. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the
attack. Later, it was revealed that a security camera had captured the truck crashing through the
perimeter fence into the entrance lobby. After routine technical treatment, the experts managed to
recover, and subsequently released to the media, the face of …

5. Child Witnesses And The Oath: Empirical Evidence., Thomas D. Lyon Dec 1999

5. Child Witnesses And The Oath: Empirical Evidence., Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

In Commonwealth v. Corbett, the defendant was charged with sexually assaulting a five-year-old child. As in most cases of sexual abuse, the child was the only witness to the abuse, and the prosecution viewed her testimony as essential. However, before the prosecutor could present the child's testimony to the jury, it was necessary to qualify her for the oath. Most courts require that child witnesses have some understanding of the difference between the truth and lies and the importance of telling the truth, and Massachusetts is no exception. A child who fails the qualifying questions is considered testimonially incompetent, and …

The Cardenista Masonic Rite, Paul J. Rich Dec 1999

The Cardenista Masonic Rite, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

First as a conference presentation and in the pages of Heredom, and then in another version in the Columbia University Press volume "Freemasonry on Both Sides of the Atlantic", this study of what was frequently asserted was a separate Mexican rite of Freemasonry proved to be an opportunity for debunking a longtime assertion and placing in perspective a Mexican president's Masonic career. As we eventually became confident enough to claim, it was a rite that wasn't. Curiously, as with the poem and apron that weren't those of Robert Burns, we seemed to get attention for putting old saws to rest.

Redesign Of Library Workflows: Experimental Models For Electronic Resource Description, Karen S. Calhoun Dec 1999

Redesign Of Library Workflows: Experimental Models For Electronic Resource Description, Karen S. Calhoun

Karen S Calhoun

Explores the transition from a highly centralized model for cataloging to an iterative, collaborative, and broadly distributed model for electronic resource description. The purpose is to alert library managers to some experiments underway and to help them conceptualize new methods for defining, planning, and leading the e-resource description process under moderate to severe time and staffing constraints.

Opening The ‘Black Box:’ Small Groups And 21st Century Sociology, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington, Gary Alan Fine Dec 1999

Opening The ‘Black Box:’ Small Groups And 21st Century Sociology, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington, Gary Alan Fine

Brooke Harrington

As sociologists look into the new century for sources of explanatory leverage, we argue that small group research contains untapped theoretical potential. Small groups have been largely ignored as a topic in their own right; instead they are treated as a “black box” in which other social phenomena are observed. We propose a reassessment. By opening the “black box,” sociologists will find that the core issues of the discipline come together in small groups. We draw together the literatures of five domains, across which the findings on small groups are fragmented. These findings show that small groups are the locus …

Piac És Igazságosság? (Market And Justice?), Attila Tanyi Dec 1999

Piac És Igazságosság? (Market And Justice?), Attila Tanyi

Attila Tanyi

The aim of the book is to uncover the relation between market and justice through the critical examination of the work of Friedrich Hayek. The book argues for the following thesis: the institution of free market is not the only candidate social system; substantial, not merely formal distributive justice must become the central virtue of our social institutions. Notwithstanding its achievements and virtues, the Hayekian theory makes a simple mistake by equivocating possible social systems, dividing them into two groups. One is the world of liberty and free market where people follow the general and abstract rules of conduct, accepting …

Adaptive Testing In Arch Models, Douglas G. Steigerwald, Oliver Linton Dec 1999

Adaptive Testing In Arch Models, Douglas G. Steigerwald, Oliver Linton

Douglas G. Steigerwald

Specification tests for conditional heteroskedasticity that are derived under the assumption that the density of the innovation is Gaussian may not be powerful in light of the recent empirical results that the density is not Gaussian. We obtain specification tests for conditional heteroskedasticity under the assumption that the innovation density is a member of a general family of densities. Our test statistics maximize asymptotic local power and weighted average power criteria for the general family of densities. We establish both first-order and second-order theory for our procedures. Simulations indicate that asymptotic power gains are achievable in finite samples.

Conflict Transformation In Nation Building: The Case Of East Timor., Tatsushi Arai Dec 1999

Conflict Transformation In Nation Building: The Case Of East Timor., Tatsushi Arai

Tatsushi Arai

This essay analyzes challenges and opportunities of the newly independent East Timor, a territory in the process of nation-building and conflict transformation. The analysis focuses on two levels of tranformative capacity building—the formal government institutions and the social relationships outside the government. At the institutional level, East Timorese military personnel, political parties, and elected representatives possess the potential to develop dynamic relations conducive to the sustainable capacity of domestic conflict transformation. On the social relationship side, three sets of paradoxical orientations involved in conflict transformation—personal versus contextual change, justice versus mercy, and empowerment versus interdependence—are explored in the context of …

Housing And Sustainable Community Development: Enhancing Minority Home Ownership, Volume One, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Harvey L. White

Michael P. Johnson

The articles in this volume are from the Housing and Sustainable Community Development Track of the Twenty-Eighth National Meeting of the Conference of Minority Public Administrators (COMPA). They represent COMPA’s enhanced role in supporting academics and practitioners interested in housing and sustainable community development. These articles span the subject areas of urban revitalization (Herrington 2000), residential and housing concentration (Foster 2000), financial institution practices (Rhodes and White 2000, Ejigiri 2000), community socioeconomic characteristics (Martin 2000), homeownership (Baulding 2000) and subsidized housing (Johnson 2000). They address new and innovative strategies for community growth and revitalization and the need to communicate practicing …

Tolkien's Cauldron: Northern Literature And The Lord Of The Rings, Gloriana St. Clair

Gloriana St. Clair

Tolkien's Cauldron studies the sources of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien was a scholar of Old Norse literature and much of his work in the Lord of the Rings is informed by his knowledge of old Norse mythology, Eddic poetry, and saga. Tolkien's use of these sources enriched this complex story of Middle-earth.
