Advertising And Culture: Variations On The Theme Of Individualism In Korean And American Magazine Advertising, Joyce M. Wolburg, Hoh Kim
Advertising And Culture: Variations On The Theme Of Individualism In Korean And American Magazine Advertising, Joyce M. Wolburg, Hoh Kim
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Social scientists regard the U.S. and the Republic of Korea as countries with opposing cultural values. Given this contrast, the advertising of each culture is expected to differ. An examination of magazine advertising indicates that American ads strongly express the individualistic culture; however, the Korean ads not only express collectivistic ideas but individualistic ones as well. Although this phenomenon is not entirely surprising given the strength of Western influence, Korean individualistic messages are different from American individualistic messages. This suggests that expressions of individualism in ads blend with the elements of each culture to produce uniquely different messages ..

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Democracy is a system of government in which the people of a state govern themselves under the idea that every person's vote and opinion is equal in the eyes of the government. In its purest form, a democratic government involves all citizens equally in every level of administration. The United States government was founded on this belief that citizens deserve the right to govern themselves, but the system created by the founders of this country was a form of representative democracy. Rebelling against the British monarchy, which would not allow the American colonies a voice in Parliament, the founders of …
Project Body Image, Elaine M. Eshbaugh
Project Body Image, Elaine M. Eshbaugh
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
I have chosen to develop an intervention intended to improve body image in middle/junior high school girls. This project has been conducted in four parts: 1) literature review, 2) initial screening, 3) college interviews, and 4) middle school group interview. My goal in interviewing college women was to compare the ideas and experiences of those with positive and negative body images and incorporate these findings into my intervention. My motivation for interviewing middle school girls was to explore more fully their culture, in particular the media images that are most influential in their lives. I will detail each of these …
Romantic Relationships: Beliefs Reflected, Reinforced, And Created In Popular Song Lyrics And Musical Content, Heather J. Meierhofer
Romantic Relationships: Beliefs Reflected, Reinforced, And Created In Popular Song Lyrics And Musical Content, Heather J. Meierhofer
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Language and music work together in popular songs to portray messages that help construct listeners' reality. As humans, we understand and interpret the world through the language and images provided for us in our symbolic universe. Mass media – particularly those forms that distribute popular music – help to create and reflect the ideologies, or common sets of beliefs, within a culture. Thus, popular music is an important artifact for examination. Popular music is a mass media form in which messages concerning romantic relationships abound. This study's examination of the Billboard top eight popular songs from 1990 to 1995 provides …
The Media Mirror: The Coverage Of The Nato Bombing Of The Chinese Embassy In The China Daily And Usa Today, Kevin Thomas Clancy
The Media Mirror: The Coverage Of The Nato Bombing Of The Chinese Embassy In The China Daily And Usa Today, Kevin Thomas Clancy
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
May 7, 1999 – A U.S.-supported NATO mission bombs the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. Within hours the two countries are in the midst of political strife and cultural misunderstanding. As Chinese and U.S. media illustrate, there is one bombing and two very different stories. How correct is the media picture? The question lies at the heart of this research. Consequently, in an attempt to shed light upon black and white journalistic frames of China, this study applies ideological analysis to the China Daily and USA Today coverage of the NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy. The goal of this comparative …

Dissertations And Theses Sponsored By The Department Of Sociology In The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln 1905-1999: Alphabetical And Chronological Lists, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The year 2000 marks the centennial of the formal departmental organization of sociology at the University of Nebraska. The compilations presented here recognize and celebrate the achievements of hundreds of graduate students, my fellow alumni, who have completed masters theses and doctoral dissertations under the auspices of the Department of Sociology. These student works are constructive, often innovative additions to the advancement of knowledge, and several have been abridged in journal articles or published as books (cf., Hill 1988b). The doctoral dissertation, in particular, is a major rite de passage in the transition from student to intellectual (Deegan and Hill …

Loren Eiseley And Sociology At The University Of Nebraska, 1926-1936: The Sociological Training Of A Noted Anthropologist, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
LOREN COREY EISELEY [1907-1977] rose from modest beginnings to become one of the nation’s foremost essayists, naturalists, and anthropologists (Carlisle 1983; Christianson 1990; Carrithers 1991; Gerber 1983; Heidtmann 1991; Pitts 1995), and his work was built on a solid interdisciplinary foundation that included intensive undergraduate and graduate study in sociology at the University of Nebraska.1 Eiseley, the writer, is best known today for The Immense Journey (1957), The Firmament of Time (1960), and The Unexpected Universe (1969), his most popular books. As a mature scholar tenured at the University of Pennsylvania, Eiseley served as Provost; Professor and Chair of the …

Review Of Le Play, Engineer And Social Scientist, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This monograph, a biographical sketch of the early French sociologist, Pierre Guillaume Frederic Le Play, is not a new book. Despite the crisp and attractive appearance of this handsome volume now offered by Transaction Publishers, it is a reprint of a work originally published in England in 1970 by Longmans (a fact noted only in the fore matter on the copyright page). A book of this vintage deserves a new introduction and a bibliographic update. Further, unsettling my sensibilities as an academically trained geographer, Transaction did not reprint the fold-out, multicolor exemplar of Le Play's cartography, located between pages 8 …

Religious Contacts Between Sri Lanka And Thailand From The Pre-Colonial Period Tothe Colonial Period, Piyanart Bunnag
Religious Contacts Between Sri Lanka And Thailand From The Pre-Colonial Period Tothe Colonial Period, Piyanart Bunnag
Asian Review
Religious contacts between Sri Lanka and Thailand began during the pre-colonial period in the late thirteenth century up until the colonial period in the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries as each country conducted its relationship with the other on a reciprocal basis . Sri Lanka, as the first giver of Theravada Buddhism to Thailand, had a cultural influence on Thailand in terms of Buddhism. However, Thailand was able to harmoniously integrate Sri Lanka's influences with traditional Thai culture. Later on, Thailand had a chance "to repay her debt" to Sri Lanka by reviving the declining Buddhism in Sri Lanka …
An Adaptation Of Traditional Beliefs To Buddhism : A Study Of Lan Xang Literature, Sukanya Suchxaya
An Adaptation Of Traditional Beliefs To Buddhism : A Study Of Lan Xang Literature, Sukanya Suchxaya
Asian Review
The purpose of this article is to study the adaptation of the Tai- Lao people's traditional beliefs to Buddhism. The study is based on 5 important Lan Xang literary works, namely Khun Bourom , Thao Ba Jueng , Phaya Khankhak , Khu Lu- Nang Oua and Pha Daeng - Nang Ai. The result of the study reveals that these works are traditionally oral tales of the Tai-Laos people, which were composed in written form only after the reign of King Vixul of the Lan Xang Kingdom ( A.D.1500- 1520). It is supposed that most of the poet authors were Buddhist …

An Acrostic Approach To Teaching Public Speaking In The Hybrid Communication Course, David W. Worley
An Acrostic Approach To Teaching Public Speaking In The Hybrid Communication Course, David W. Worley
Basic Communication Course Annual
Given the time and pedagogical demands of teaching the principles of public speaking in the hybrid course, both instructors and students are assisted by using a summative, yet sufficiently through, approach to teaching these principles. As acrostic approach described in a preparation outline format and built upon the word S-P-E-A-K provides an integrated, summative and sufficiently thorough instructional approach to meet these demands.
Assessment Of The Repeated Speech Performance As A Pedagogical Tool: A Pilot Study, Mark A. Gring, Jera W. Littlejohn
Assessment Of The Repeated Speech Performance As A Pedagogical Tool: A Pilot Study, Mark A. Gring, Jera W. Littlejohn
Basic Communication Course Annual
Realizing the ongoing need to develop pedagogy in public speaking, these researchers investigated the learning achieved by asking students to repeat one of their speech assignments. They assessed the value of this practice from the students' viewpoint as well as the statistical change in performance outcomes. Across the eight competencies evaluated, students' average scores increased significantly on the repeated speech. Students who scored in the lower quartile on the first speech benefited most from the second opportunity. The researchers conclude that allowing students to repeat a speech appears to have pedagogical and practical merit.
Financial Intermediaries And The Design Of Loan Contracts In The Australasian Pastoral Sector Before World War Two, Simon Ville, G. Fleming
Financial Intermediaries And The Design Of Loan Contracts In The Australasian Pastoral Sector Before World War Two, Simon Ville, G. Fleming
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
This paper examines the pooling and separating contracts designed by Australasian financial intermediaries in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We show that after an initial screening process these agents altered interest rates and collateral requirements to separate out risk types to reveal additional information on borrowers. In multi-period contracts agents opted for flexible contract structures which permitted changes in individual or community-wide circumstances.

The Nature And Structure Of Trade-Financial Networks: Evidence From The New Zealand Pastoral Sector, 1860-1939, Simon Ville, G. Fleming
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
This study applies modern network theory to trade and finance networks in the New Zealand pastoral sector before World War Two It particularly examines the manner in which networks can include trading and financial business transactions simultaneously. In addition, it provides evidence of the role of leadership in such networks, in this case played by the stock and station agents as intermediaries bringing farmers into contact with a wide range of service providers.

The Effect Of Geographic Mobility On Male Labour-Force Particpants In The United States, Joan R. Rodgers, John L. Rodgers
The Effect Of Geographic Mobility On Male Labour-Force Particpants In The United States, Joan R. Rodgers, John L. Rodgers
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
We use both fixed-effects and random-effects regression models to measure the effect of geographic mobility on earnings of labor-force participants in the United States. The results support the human-capital hypothesis: six years after moving, real earnings of male labor-force participants are about 20 percent higher than they would have been had the move not occurred. Men younger than 40, and men with family-unit incomes no more than five times the poverty line, experience even larger benefits from moving. The geographic mobility that is characteristic of the United States’ flexible labor market, in general, is beneficial to the movers.
Poverty Intensity In Australia, Joan R. Rodgers, John L. Rodgers
Poverty Intensity In Australia, Joan R. Rodgers, John L. Rodgers
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Even though poverty indices with axiomatically sound properties have been advocated for several decades, most empirical studies of poverty in Australia and elsewhere continue to use the crude, but easily understood, head-count ratio. The difficulty of interpreting the axiomatically more desirable indices is a major reason why their use has been resisted in applied poverty measurement. This paper demonstrates how the more sophisticated poverty indices can be converted into a form that is readily interpreted as a measure of poverty intensity of a group, relative to the population to which the group belongs. The resulting poverty-intensity index is easy to …
Behavioral Market Segmentation Of Binary Guest Survey Data With Bagged Clustering, Sara Dolnicar, Friedrich Leisch
Behavioral Market Segmentation Of Binary Guest Survey Data With Bagged Clustering, Sara Dolnicar, Friedrich Leisch
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Binary survey data from the Austrian National Guest Survey conducted in the summer season of 1997 were used to identify behavioural market segments on the basis of vacation activity information. Bagged clustering overcomes a number of diffculties typically encountered when partitioning large binary data sets: The partitions have greater structural stability over repetitions of the algorithm and the question of the "correct" number of clusters is less important because of the hierarchical step of the cluster analysis. Finally, the bootstrap part of the algorithm provides means for assessing and visualizing segment stability for each input variable.

Flexible Learning At The Crossroads: Are Our Teachers Ready?, Sandra Wills
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
This paper reflects on managing technological change in teaching and learning, with particular emphasis on staff development. It draws on two national reports in Australia. One report team interviewed senior management in 50% of Australian universities (Wills and Yetton, 1997). The other reviewed 104 nationally funded IT based teaching projects (Alexander et al, 1998). Both make recommendations that have implications for staff development. A number of staff development case studies are described, most practising what they preach by adopting flexible learning techniques in order to teach teachers by example about flexible learning: Project LEAD, Teaching at a Distance, Flexible Delivery …

Subject Online Survey (Sos): An Online Tool To Support Improvement In Teaching And Learning, Robert M. Corderoy, Raymond J. Stace, Sandra Wills, Albert Ip
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
Traditionally, data relating to the conduct of subjects at the University of Wollongong has been collected for teachers with one main purpose in mind: to provide the teacher with supporting information as to their teaching ability for the purposes of promotion. SOS is a web based system which teachers can use to author customised surveys to collect information about the subject they teach. These surveys are completed anonymously by the students via the web (using randomly generated, survey specific numeric tokens) and the data is automatically collated and returned to the teacher. The teacher may also produce the surveys in …
Academic Standards Versus Disability Rights, Richard Gosden, Gregory R. Hampton
Academic Standards Versus Disability Rights, Richard Gosden, Gregory R. Hampton
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
A simmering controversy has been running in the United states since 1995 over the perceived conflict between the maintenance of academic standards and the rights of disabled university students. Recent developments are set to raise the same issue in Australian universities. The first of these developments is the shift in the emphasis of academic standards with the implementation of the Generic Skills Assessment (GSA) program. The second is the release of draft disability standards for education to streamline enforcement of the Commonwealth's Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). The DDA protects disabled people against discrimination in education. Amongst the many types of …

Telling Stories: Text Analysis In A Museum, Emily Rose Purser
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
Museum texts tell interesting stories, and their role in public education makes them quite important. The exhibition discussed in this paper gives a message that interests, but also concerns me, as a teacher of language, communication and cultural studies. It is a case of one culture telling stories about another, and in such a delicate arena there is much potential to cause offence. The exhibition in question is about peoples of the Pacific, and is in a major European museum of the world's indigenous cultures (BerlinDahlem). I had visited it to see how Australian cultures are represented in image and …
Simulated Annealing With An Optimal Fixed Temperature, Mark James Fielding
Simulated Annealing With An Optimal Fixed Temperature, Mark James Fielding
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Contrary to conventional belief, it turns out that in some problem instances of moderate size, fixed temperature simulated annealing algorithms based on a heuristic formula for determining the optimal temperature can be superior to algorithms based on cooling. Such a heuristic formula, however, often seems elusive. In practical cases considered we include instances of traveling salesman, quadratic assignment, and graph partitioning problems, where we obtain results that compare favorably to the ones known in the literature.

Induced C*-Algebras, Coactions And Equivariance In The Symmetric Imprimitivity Theorem, Siegfried Echterhoff, Iain Raeburn
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The symmetric imprimitivity theorem provides a Morita equivalence between two crossed products of induced C*-algebras and includes as special cases many other important Morita equivalences such as Green's imprimitivity theorem. We show that the symmetric imprimitivity theorem is compatible with various inflated actions and coactions on the crossed products.
