Building A Teacher Education Program For Efl Teachers: From Process To Product, Eliana Santana

MA TESOL Collection

This IPP contains a teacher education program for a school in the north of Brazil. It also shows the process I used in order to construct it. It shows the context for which the program was developed, the state-of-the-art in TESOL teacher preparation, as well as my own beliefs and assumptions about how learning teaching takes place. Then, it presents the needs analysis as well as the curriculum designed for the program.

The Affect Of Writing On The Internet, Jane Hoelker

MA TESOL Collection

This paper is a description of the development, objectives, implementation and results of an advanced composition course conducted on the Internet with IWE (International Writing Exchange) of the Helsinki University of Technology. The purpose of the course was to motivate students of English who were discouraged during the difficult IMF era in Korea in 1998. But, in 1998 opportunities for overseas travel and study had been greatly curtailed due to IMF …

The School Environment In Egypt: A Situation Analysis Of Public Preparatory Schools, Sahar El Tawila, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Barbara Mensch, Hind Wassef, Zeinab Gamal, Wesley H. Clark, Rania Sakr

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Very little research exists in Egypt on contemporary education outcomes and their relationship to an array of education inputs. Also, few datasets are available on the acquisition and retention of basic skills from education. This research aims at filling that gap in our knowledge by drawing a profile of the situation of public preparatory schools, investigating the distinct dimensions of the environment in these schools, and examining the links among these dimensions and specific education outcomes. As noted in this report, this study focuses on the preparatory stage of the general education system. Students in this stage comprise one-quarter of …

Relationship Between Body Image Dissatisfaction And Fear Of Fatness To Severity Of Smoking Behavior In A Non-Clinical Adolescent Population, Louis J. Bevilacqua, Jr.

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the U.S., yet it continues to kill more people than AIDS, automobile crashes, alcohol and drug abuse, murders, suicides, and fires---combined! In addition to a higher risk of dying prematurely, those who smoke are much more likely to experience numerous health problems. Other associated problems include dependency and tolerance to nicotine. Frequently, those who smoke are also more likely to use other substances such as marijuana, cocaine, heroine, and especially alcohol. These findings are frightening considering that it is estimated that 4.5 million are adolescents. The reasons why adolescents smoke range …

Sustainability Of Least Cost Policies For Meeting Mexico City's Future Water Demand, Timothy Downs, Marisa Mazari-Hiriart, Ramón Domínguez-Mora, Irwin Suffet Jan 2000

Sustainability Of Least Cost Policies For Meeting Mexico City's Future Water Demand, Timothy Downs, Marisa Mazari-Hiriart, Ramón Domínguez-Mora, Irwin Suffet

Sustainability and Social Justice

Meeting future water demand without degrading ecosystems is one important indicator of sustainable development. Using simulations, we showed that compared to existing policy, more sustainable water supply options are similar or cheaper in cost. We probabilistically forecasted the Mexico City metropolitan zone population for the year 2015 to be 23.5 million and total required water supply to be 106 m3 s-1. We optimized existing and potential supply sources from aquifers, surface water, treatment/reuse, and efficiency/demand management by cost to meet future supply needs; the applied source supply limits determined the degree of sustainability. In two scenarios to supply 106 m3 …

Selecting High-Priority Hazardous Chemicals For Tri-National Control: A Maximum-Utility Method Applied To Mexico, Timothy Downs, Carlos Santos-Burgoa Jan 2000

Selecting High-Priority Hazardous Chemicals For Tri-National Control: A Maximum-Utility Method Applied To Mexico, Timothy Downs, Carlos Santos-Burgoa

Sustainability and Social Justice

The dispersion of persistent, bioaccumulative toxic chemicals poses risks to human health and the integrity of the ecosystem on a continental scale. Mexico, the United States, and Canada sought to add two pollutants to an existing list of four subject to North American Regional Action Plans (chlordane, DDT, mercury, PCBs). Mexican negotiators used results from an internal selection process, applying 14 criteria in five categories - physicochemical, health-endpoint, data quality/quantity, exposure potential, and control feasibility - to a baseline group of over 4,700 substances. Using policy analysis by the multi-attribute maximum-utility method; progressive application of criteria and weighting algorithms acted …

Psychology And The Church: An Exemplar Of Psychologist-Clergy Collaboration, Kathryn M. Benes, Joseph M. Welsh, Mark R. Mcminn, Amy W. Dominguez, Daniel C. Aikins

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Despite the increasing attention being given to clergy-psychologist collaboration, many psychologists may wonder what clergy-psychologist collaboration looks like in actual practice. The authors describe an example of clergy-psychologist collaboration involving a careful needs-assessment phase followed by the development of a wide spectrum of preventive, consultative, and direct services. Current challenges include funding, establishment of trust, and the integration of psychology and spirituality. Implications for professional psychologists are discussed.

The Good Girl Bad Girl Dilemma: Exploring Rural Maine Girls' Sexual Desires, Behaviors, And Relationships, Mary Madden Jan 2000

The Good Girl Bad Girl Dilemma: Exploring Rural Maine Girls' Sexual Desires, Behaviors, And Relationships, Mary Madden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past decade, feminist researchers have re-framed girls’ developmental issues examining the complexities inherent in growing up female in a patriarchal society. In particular, these studies have provided information on the complications girls encounter in their efforts to negotiate ideals of white middle-class conventions of femininity. In the few studies that examine how these ideals of femininity effect girls’ sexuality, rural girls from poor and working-class families are rarely considered. The goal of this study was to deepen and expand the current understanding of adolescent girls’ sexuality by bringing the voices of rural girls from poor and working-class families …
