Defining The Field: Revisiting The Aca 1995 Definition Of Communication Studies, Charles J. Korn, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Don M. Boileau Jan 2000

Defining The Field: Revisiting The Aca 1995 Definition Of Communication Studies, Charles J. Korn, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Don M. Boileau

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article deals with the problem of defining communication studies in higher education. In 1995, the Association for Communication Administration (ACA) convened a summer conference that produced a two-sentence definition of the field of communication. More than 100 conferees voted their unanimous approval of the definition, which was then disseminated nationally and used by communication scholar/teachers for a multiplicity of purposes. Given the potential utility of that definition and the expansion of communication studies since 1995, the present study surveyed ACA's current members to determine whether they are aware the definition exists, how they have used it, and the extent …

Developments In Communication Ethics: The Ethics Commission, Code Of Professional Responsibilities, Credo For Ethical Communication, Kenneth E. Andersen

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article looks at the state of communication ethics study and practice in the U.S. Ethics has always been a dimension of communication theory and practice. But the definition of its role and the awareness of and emphasis given to it varies from communication theorist to theorist and practitioner to practitioner. These variations can be traced from the rhetorical theories and practices of ancient Greece to the present. Similarly, the approach to and emphasis given ethics as an element in communication has varied in the communication field's teaching and research. The academic units historically identified as speech, speech communication, communication …

What Is New Or Different About The Scholarship Of Teaching?, Feezel Jerry, S.-A. Welch

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

SCHOLARSHIP Reconsidered (Boyer, 1990) summarized a new way of approaching higher education. This report presented higher education as a set of four scholarships, four means of accomplishing the goals of academe. The purpose of our report is to address the scholarship of teaching, both as an activity and as an assessment of such activity. This report will focus on the scholarship of teaching by addressing: What is the scholarship of teaching? What qualities exist in this form of scholarship? What are the requirements of this scholarship? How does one accomplish this scholarship? And finally, how can the scholarship of teaching …

White Women, Black Revolutionaries: Sex And Politics In Four Novels By Nadine Gordimer, Nancy Topping Bazin Jan 2000

White Women, Black Revolutionaries: Sex And Politics In Four Novels By Nadine Gordimer, Nancy Topping Bazin

English Faculty Publications

As early as 1959, the white South African novelist, essayist, and short story writer Nadine Gordimer wrote an essay, "Where Do Whites Fit In?" As the black struggle for power intensified and finally achieved its primary goal of black majority rule in 1994, Gordimer continued to reflect upon this question. Her eighth novel, July's People (1981), is a psychological and political fable. It celebrates a white woman's readiness to reject the relationships and privileges that bind her to the white world and her readiness to embrace the new South Africa of an emancipated black majority. The novels written before July's …

Biological Science In Conservation, David Johns Jan 2000

Biological Science In Conservation, David Johns

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Large-scale wildlands reserve systems offer one of the best hopes for slowing, if not reversing, the loss of biodiversity and wilderness. Establishing such reserves requires both sound biology and effective advocacy. Attempts by The Wildlands Project and its cooperators to meld science and advocacy in the service of conservation is working, but is not without some problems. Scientists and advocates have differences in methods of work, different understandings of the origins and place of values in conservation, and differing expectations about the efficacy of biological information in achieving protection. Despite these differences, successful relationships can be forged where these differences …

Honored: Emily Russell Award 2000, Bonnnie L. Travers

The Christian Librarian

It is my honor and privilege this evening to present the Emily Russel Award to one of the finest Christian Librarians it has been our collective privilege to know. For me, it is even more; it is sheer joy to give tribute to a woman who has during our longstanding professional relationship been a source of inspiration, a model of integrity, and a continuing influence. Probably all of us in this room can list only a few people besides family members who have made a major impact on us. I would list this lady's name.

Access To The Site Has Been Blocked!, Doug Fruehling

The Christian Librarian

I approach the topic of Internet filters as a librarian at a Christian liberal arts institution of higher education, PointLomaNazarene University (PLNU). The following should not be taken as an official statement regarding PLNU policy. No doubt Christian librarians at public libraries find they must address these issues differently from those encountered at Christian campuses.

Catalog Design, Catalog Maintenance, Catalog Governance, Mary K. Bolin Jan 2000

Catalog Design, Catalog Maintenance, Catalog Governance, Mary K. Bolin

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The design of library catalogs and the maintenance of their contents equals catalog governance, that is, professional responsibility for the catalog. The design of library catalogs and their contents are an example of the standards that are the hallmark of modern librarianship. Although design and maintenance standards have always had an array of participants, in recent years the participants in catalog design and maintenance have become more numerous and varied, and therefore its governance has become more diffuse. Although the card catalog had a standard form in which design and maintenance were linked, that is not true of today’s OPAC …

Law And Values In Governance: The Singapore Way, Eugene K. B. Tan Jan 2000

Law And Values In Governance: The Singapore Way, Eugene K. B. Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The article examines the role of law and the legal system in catalysing Singapore's development success. It argues that there is a dichotomy in the approach with regard to commercial law and law relating to individual freedom and rights and civil society. Universalism characterises the treatment of commercial laws while cultural relativism and a communitarian-based understanding of rights and obligations are features of the law relating to the rights of the individual. Instrumentalism, driven by a particularistic 'communitarian' political philosophy underpinned by strong Confucianist values, is very much motivated by the need for good governance as a prerequisite for economic …

Incentives To Settle Under Joint And Several Liability: An Empirical Analysis Of Superfund Litigation, Howard F. Chang, Hilary Sigman Jan 2000

Incentives To Settle Under Joint And Several Liability: An Empirical Analysis Of Superfund Litigation, Howard F. Chang, Hilary Sigman

All Faculty Scholarship

Congress may soon restrict joint and several liability for cleanup of contaminated sites under Superfund. We explore whether this change would discourage settlements and is therefore likely to increase the program 's already high litigation costs per site. Recent theoretical research by Kornhauser and Revesz finds that joint and several liability may either encourage or discourage settlement, depending on the correlation of outcomes at trial across defendants. We extend their two-defendant model to a richer framework with N defendants. This extension allows us to test the theoretical model empirically using data on Superfund litigation. We find that joint and several …

The Economics Of Residential Solid Waste Management, Thomas C. Kinnaman Jan 2000

The Economics Of Residential Solid Waste Management, Thomas C. Kinnaman

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper provides a broad overview of recent trends in solid waste and recycling, related public policy issues, and the economics literature devoted to these topics. Public attention to solid waste and recycling has increased dramatically over the past decade both in the United States and in Europe. In response, economists have developed models to help policy makers choose the efficient mix of policy levers to regulate solid waste and recycling activities. Economists have also employed different kinds of data to estimate the factors that contribute to the generation of residential solid waste and recycling and to estimate the effectiveness …

Credibility, Agency, And The Interaction Order, Philip Manning Jan 2000

Credibility, Agency, And The Interaction Order, Philip Manning

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

There are two ways of reading Goffman-as a theorist of trust and ritual accommodation, that is, as a theorist of the interaction order, or as a theorist of deception. I suggest a way of making these two readings compatible, by arguing that Goffman was interested in what I call the "production of credibility." Credibility is the quality of being believable, and this quality is integral to both trust and deception. Viewed in this way Goffman explored the ways in which people make their actions convincing to other people. Although Goffman's analysis of the interaction order did not need a theory …

An Ethical Exploration Of Gender Inequality In Church Leadership, Elizabeth Rickert Jan 2000

An Ethical Exploration Of Gender Inequality In Church Leadership, Elizabeth Rickert

Honors Theses

An Ethical Exploration of Gender Inequality in Church Leadership provides a moral analysis of the current status of women leaders in the church. Drawing on socio- analytical, ethical-theological, and leadership studies perspectives, this thesis sheds light on the disparity between the theological principles of equality and the ecclesiastical practices of inequality that create an unhealthy moral environment in churches.

Gender inequality in church leadership exists today in both the congregations permitting the ordination of women as well as in those that do not. This widespread discrepancy between rules and practices concerning women leaders in the church points to the socially …

Locus Of Control Orientation And Acceptance Of Disability, Hanoch Livneh, Erin Martz, Joseph Turpin Jan 2000

Locus Of Control Orientation And Acceptance Of Disability, Hanoch Livneh, Erin Martz, Joseph Turpin

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this study was to determine if differences existed in acceptance of disability scores between individuals with internal locus of control and external locus of control orientations. Ninety-seven out of 200 randomly-chosen participants with disabilities from a southern California community college completed the Reactions to Impairment and Disability Inventory (RIDI), Rotter's I-E Locus of Control Scale, and a demographic profile sheet. Acceptance of disability was defined as both acknowledgment and adjustment to a disability. Adjustment scores were found to be higher among those with an internal locus of control orientation but only among participants with mental/psychiatric disabilities. Also, …
