[Review Of] Eric Greene. Planet Of The Apes As American Myth: Race, Politics, And Popular Culture, George H. Junne Jr

Ethnic Studies Review

Planet of the Apes (1968) was such a hit movie that it spawned several sequels. They included Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973). In the 1974 television season CBS broadcast the series "Planet of the Apes." NBC followed with the animated Saturday morning series (September, 1975-September, 1976), "Return to the Planet of the Apes." Eric Greene clearly demonstrates that the Apes saga is little more than the support of the American myth of triumphalism: …

Transforming Scholarship Assessed Into Scholarship Accessed: Examining The Communication Implications Of A Boyer Report, Michael W. Shelton

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article presents an overview of the book Scholarship Assessed, by C. E. Glassick et al. The book is an Ernest Boyer project of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The work is clearly designed to extend the original argument made in the book Scholarship Reconsidered, which builds the case for extending the boundaries of what counts as scholarly activity for the nation's faculty at colleges and universities. The text is divided into five chapters that follow Boyer's prologue. In addition, the text attempts to address the concerns raised by Boyer and to develop a general understanding of …

Background

Patients with chronic forms of major depression are difficult to treat, and the relative efficacy of medications and psychotherapy is uncertain.

Methods

We randomly assigned 681 adults with a chronic nonpsychotic major depressive disorder to 12 weeks of outpatient treatment with nefazodone (maximal dose, 600 mg per day), the cognitive behavioral-analysis system of psychotherapy (16 to 20 sessions), or both. At base line, all patients had scores of at least 20 on the 24-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (indicating clinically significant depression). Remission was defined as a score of 8 or less at weeks 10 and 12. For …

The Clapham Sect : An Investigation Into The Effects Of Deep Faith In A Personal God On A Change Effort, Victoria Marple

Honors Theses

This study was undertaken primarily out of an apparent inability of leadership material to answer the question of "Why" in their studies of change efforts. Despite many scholarly materials on how societal alterations occurs and steps to make social action successful, little has been written regarding the internal influences on individuals involved in these efforts and on how these influences make the leader or group successful. This particular case study has been chosen because of its clear portrayal of various leadership theories including catalytic leadership, charismatic leadership and change theory. Moreover, writings about the Clapham Sect clearly evidence that the …

A Comprehensive Wealth Tax, David Shakow, Reed Shuldiner Jan 2000

A Comprehensive Wealth Tax, David Shakow, Reed Shuldiner

All Faculty Scholarship

Income, consumption, and wealth are all possible bases for a tax system in the United States. Scholars have specified the structure of income tax and consumption taxes, but no one has attempted to describe in detail a comprehensive wealth tax for the United States. In this paper, we begin to develop such a structure. In particular, we hypothesize that the combination of a flat rate tax on networth and a flat rate tax on earned income along with an appropriate level of exemptions, could be an attractive tax base. In order to explore the structure of a wealth tax, we …

Fronting And Palatalization In Two Dialects Of Shoshoni, Dirk Elzinga Jan 2000

Fronting And Palatalization In Two Dialects Of Shoshoni, Dirk Elzinga

Faculty Publications

In Western Shoshoni, a Uto- Aztecan language spoken in northern Nevada, coronal obstruents are found in distributional patterns which depend on the presence or absence of a preceding front vowel ([i] or [e]). In the pattern I refer to as FRONTING, alveolar stops alternate with dental stops - dental stops occur following front vowels (la), while alveolar stops occur elsewhere (lb); this pattern is common to all dialects:

The Effect Of The Auap Study Abroad Experience On The Students' Cultural Perceptions, K. James Hartshorn Jan 2000

The Effect Of The Auap Study Abroad Experience On The Students' Cultural Perceptions, K. James Hartshorn

Faculty Publications

As the Asia University America Program (AUAP) commences its second decade, those who have closely observed this unique study abroad experience are aware of a variety of ways the students seem to benefit from their participation. Some of these benefits are academic and can be seen in the development and improvement of specific language skills, gains in standardized test scores and earned university credit applied toward graduation. However, there seem to be a variety of other valuable benefits that may be a little more difficult to measure. such benefits could include the enlargement of the students' international perspective as world …

United States V General Dynamics: A Reappraisal, Anthony Wylie

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

The purpose of this paper is to examine the reasons behind Material Services’ acquisitions, the reasons why the Government contested the mergers, and how the Government erred in analyzing the case. We wish to show that the combination of the three coal firms—Material Services, Freeman Coal, and United Electric—occurred for reasons of economic efficiency and practicality, not based on any atavistic desire to monopolize and damage social welfare.

Benefits By Gender: Determinants Of Welfare Accessibility For Migrant Women In Western Europe, Kathryn Vojack '00 Jan 2000

Benefits By Gender: Determinants Of Welfare Accessibility For Migrant Women In Western Europe, Kathryn Vojack '00

Honors Projects

According to statistical data, there are dissimilarities between the ease of welfare accessibility for migrant men and migrant women within European nations. Research proposes the following to be linked with welfare access: percent GDP spent on welfare, size of immigrant population, percent of Roman Catholic Church identification, relative leftism of country, percent of women in the workforce, and public attitudes of immigrant population, welfare system and feminism. Analyses of these variables indicate that welfare accessibility for migrant women is primarily explained by attitudes towards gender roles and the status of women in society rather than the size of the immigrant …

The Court in Apprendi v. New Jersey, ___ U.S. ___ (2000), held as a matter of due process that any fact, other than a prior conviction, that increases the penalty for an offense beyond the prescribed statutory maximum must be submitted to a jury and proven beyond a reasonable doubt. In a longer forthcoming article, we attempt to answer some of the profound questions raised by the case concerning constitutional oversight of legislative authority to define what is a "crime," questions that will ripen over the years as legislatures look for ways around the rule and litigants test these legislative …
