Regime Change And Elite Dynamics In Slovenia During The 1990s: What Can The Elite Reproduction Rates Tell Us?, Anton Kramberger, Vasja Vehovar
Regime Change And Elite Dynamics In Slovenia During The 1990s: What Can The Elite Reproduction Rates Tell Us?, Anton Kramberger, Vasja Vehovar
Anton Kramberger
The paper deals theoretically and empirically with elite-reproduction and elite-circulation concepts, to evaluate 'pros et cons of elite-continuity' discussion in Slovenia. The debate frequently re-appears in this economically unstable, socially fragile and politically unsettled transition country. A methodological framework is developed using the 'manpower planning approach' with an aim to meaningfully calculate and interpret elite (higher status) reproduction rates during the regime change 1988-1995.

The Parental Effect On Educational And Occupational Attainment In Slovenia During The 20th Century, Harry Bg Ganzeboom, Anton Kramberger, Paul Nieuwbeerta
Anton Kramberger
The paper empirically addresses social change and stability in Slovenia in the 20th Century, from a social stratification perspective. It brings together information on long-term trends in intergenerational mobility, using the core of Blau-Duncan model for estimating basic parental effect within occupational and educational attainment.

Homelessness Among Persons With Severe Mental Illness In An Enhanced Community-Based Mental Health System, Eri Kuno, Aileen B. Rothbard, June Averyt, Dennis P. Culhane
Homelessness Among Persons With Severe Mental Illness In An Enhanced Community-Based Mental Health System, Eri Kuno, Aileen B. Rothbard, June Averyt, Dennis P. Culhane
Dennis P. Culhane
Objective: Homelessness and patterns of service use were examined among seriously mentally ill persons in an area with a well-funded community- based mental health system. Methods: The sample consisted of 438 individuals referred between 1990 and 1992 to an extended acute care psychiatric hospital after a stay in a general hospital. Those experiencing an episode of homelessness, defined as an admission to a public shelter between 1990 and 1993, were compared with those who were residentially stable. Data from a longitudinal integrated database of public mental health and medical services were used to construct service utilization measures to test the …
What Has Eastern Europe Taught Us About The Democratisation Literature (And Vice Versa)?, Petr Kopecky, Cas Mudde
What Has Eastern Europe Taught Us About The Democratisation Literature (And Vice Versa)?, Petr Kopecky, Cas Mudde
Cas Mudde
The relationship between Eastern Europe and democratisation studies so far has been highly asymmetric. In contrast to the vast contribution, both in data and theory, of Eastern Europe to the democratisation literature, the latter has been of only modest use to the understanding of the democratisation processes in post communist Europe. Despite the growing number of empirically grounded assessments, most notably of degrees of democratic consolidation within East-Central Europe, there is still very little agreement on what exactly is democratic transition and consolidation or on what explains the seemingly widening gap between East-Central Europe on the one hand and the …
The Netherlands: Explaining The Limited Success Of The Extreme Right, Cas Mudde, Joop Van Holsteyn
The Netherlands: Explaining The Limited Success Of The Extreme Right, Cas Mudde, Joop Van Holsteyn
Cas Mudde
The third wave of right-wing extremism in West Europe, which started in the early 1980s (Von Beyme, 1988), did not pass the Netherlands by. This chapter deals with Dutch manifestation of extreme right parties, most notably its main representative, the Centrumdemocraten (Centre Democrats, CD). It presents a portrait of this party, describing its history, organization and ideology, and electorate, as well as a discussion of the reasons for its limited success compared to equivalent parties in countries like Austria, Belgium and France.

Explaining Different Paths Of Democratization: The Czech And Slovak Republics, Cas Mudde
Explaining Different Paths Of Democratization: The Czech And Slovak Republics, Cas Mudde
Cas Mudde
Since the ‘velvet split’ in January 1993, the Czech and Slovak Republics seem to have developed into completely different directions: towards a role model and a problematic case of post-communist democracy respectively. This supposedly sharp difference in development provides in itself a very interesting topic for study, but also makes for a very useful set-up to evaluate the many theories that have been offered to explain (un)successful processes of democratization in Eastern Europe. In this article, we compare the two countries in light of their degree of ‘democratic consolidation’, to establish in more detail in which way they actually differ. …
The Mystery Of Mathew Carey, Paul J. Rich
The Mystery Of Mathew Carey, Paul J. Rich
Paul J. Rich
The discovery of letters in the archives of the Historical Society in Philadelphia led to new insights into early American publishing and its links with the struggle for Mexican independence. At the center of the story was Mathew Carey, who as a young irishman escaped British authority by going to France, where he met Lafayette and subsequently with a loan from the marquis traveled to America where he established a publishing house that spuriously produced books that were smuggled to Mexico.

Paul J. Rich
Rupert Sheldrake is the controversial scientist who has suggested that many acts are somehow "saved" by nature, stored in a sort of field from which subsequent acts can derive shape and form. This of course lends itself to ritual and fraternal studies. Professor Sheldrake was kind enough to acknowledge that i was the first social scientist to import his ideas from the natural sciences where his work centered.
Masonic "White Magic" Masonry In Morelia, Mexico, Paul J. Rich
Masonic "White Magic" Masonry In Morelia, Mexico, Paul J. Rich
Paul J. Rich
One variety of Freemasonry in Mexico is called white Masonry, or house Masonry, and although the term is used loosely, it does cover lodges that meet in private homes -- sometimes with touches of astrology and even faith healing. These pictures were taken on a visit to Morelia in the Mexican state of Michoacan. The members were extraordinarily friendly, and quite convinced that their Masonic practices were superior to those of other more "regular" lodges. I was reminded of the European pratice of having chapels for religous purposes in private homes.

Relationships And Universal Energy Laws, Carroy U. Ferguson
Relationships And Universal Energy Laws, Carroy U. Ferguson
Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.
Relationships are our most intense forms of "mirrors" in the world. They show us in direct and indirect ways how we are using our personal energy systems in what I call our three life spaces. They show us how we consciously and unconsciously employ what some authors have called Universal Energy Laws (see attached descriptions of these laws) to co-create the quality of our relationships. Whether or not we "attract" and/or deal with relationships in conscious or subconscious ways, what I call the "mirror effect" is reflected in our three life spaces—personal life space, societal life space, and global life …

Short And Long-Term Effects Of Medication And Psychotherapy In The Brief Treatment Of Depression: Further Analyses Of Data From The Nimh Tdcrp, Sidney J. Blatt, David C. Zuroff, Colin M. Bondi, Charles A. Sanislow
Short And Long-Term Effects Of Medication And Psychotherapy In The Brief Treatment Of Depression: Further Analyses Of Data From The Nimh Tdcrp, Sidney J. Blatt, David C. Zuroff, Colin M. Bondi, Charles A. Sanislow
Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.
Prior analyses of data from the NIMH sponsored Treatment for Depression Collaborative Research Program (TDCRP; e.g., I. Elkin, 1994) indicated greater reduction of symptoms at midtreatment (8th wk) with Imipramine (IMI-CM) than with Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal therapy (IPT), but no significant differences in symptom reduction among these 3 active treatments at termination. Current analyses of previously unanalyzed data from ratings by therapists, clinical evaluators, and 162 patients (mean age 35 yrs) at termination and at 18-mo follow-up also indicated no significant differences among these treatments in symptom reduction or ratings of current clinical condition. But significant treatment differences …

Domestic Demand For Petroleum In Opec Countries, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Fereidun Fesharaki, Shuoying Zhou
Ujjayant Chakravorty
The literature on OPEC energy policy has focused primarily on its production and export potential. The rapidly increasing domestic demand for petroleum products in OPEC countries has often been ignored. This study estimates domestic demand for petroleum products by the major OPEC economies and forecasts consumption trends under alternative assumptions regarding economic growth and price deregulation. It concludes that product demand is generally price and income inelastic and thus domestic consumption in OPEC will continue to grow rapidly, even if domestic prices are raised closer to world levels in the near future.
