Institutional And Other Constraints To Non-Oil Exports., R. O. Madaki Sep 2001

Institutional And Other Constraints To Non-Oil Exports., R. O. Madaki

Bullion

This paper examines the non-oil exports sector in Nigeria which had witnessed a lacklustre performance despite the several statements of government's interest in export-biased growth strategy and the establishment of several export facilitating institutions. The paper further observes that a major problem with Nigeria's non-oil export sector is that it is not predicated on the design and implementation of appropriate and coherent economic policies as there is no clear export promotion blue print in Nigeria. Consequently, the sector is facing a number of institutional and other domestic and external problems. The remaining part of the paper briefly highlight some of …

Does The Producer Have An Incentive To Sell Fed Cattle On A Grid?, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi Sep 2001

Does The Producer Have An Incentive To Sell Fed Cattle On A Grid?, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi

Economics Staff Paper Series

Barriers to the adoption of grid pricing by fed cattle producers are investigated over a 206-week period (Jan. 1997 to Dec. 2000). The empirical findings document: I) when fed cattle are evaluated on a grid pricing system versus a dressed weight pricing system, a price differential per cwt. and a per-head revenue differential exists over time, 2) the price differential per cwt. is subject to seasonal variation which contributes to inconsistent price signals transmitted to producers concerning the market value of carcass characteristics over time; 3) grid revenue per-head variability is consistently higher than dressed weight revenue per-head variability over …

Trade Liberalization And Intra-Industry Trade: The Case Of The U.S. And Mexico, Robert C. Shelburne Sep 2001

Trade Liberalization And Intra-Industry Trade: The Case Of The U.S. And Mexico, Robert C. Shelburne

Robert C. Shelburne

This paper investigates how U.S.-Mexican intra-industry trade (IIT) has evolved since the creation of the NAFTA beginning in 1994. These empirical findings are of value not only for the study of the U.S.-Mexican trading relationship, but they also contain several important conclusions applicable more generally to the study of the theoretical basis for intra-industry trade and its empirical estimation. The basic conclusions of this study are: 1) Unlike the European experience after the creation of the European Common Market, and most other regional trade arrangements, trade between the U.S. and Mexico has remained mostly inter- industry trade, and the growth …

Is Free Trade Good For The Environment, M. Scott Taylor, Werner Antweiler, Brian R. Copeland Sep 2001

Is Free Trade Good For The Environment, M. Scott Taylor, Werner Antweiler, Brian R. Copeland

M. Scott Taylor

This paper investigates how openness to international goods markets affects pollution concentrations. We develop a theoretical model to divide trade’s impact on pollution into scale, technique, and composition effects and then examine this theory using data on sulfur dioxide concentrations. We find international trade creates relatively small changes in pollution concentrations when it alters the composition of national output. Estimates of the trade-induced technique and scale effects imply a net reduction in pollution from these sources. Combining our estimates of all three effects yields a somewhat surprising conclusion: freer trade appears to be good for the environment.

La Filosofía Política De Jorge Luis Borges, Martin Enrique Krause Sep 2001

La Filosofía Política De Jorge Luis Borges, Martin Enrique Krause

Martin Krause

Visual Displays Of Information: A Conceptual Taxonomy, Scott Warren Sep 2001

Visual Displays Of Information: A Conceptual Taxonomy, Scott Warren

Scott Warren

This paper creates a taxonomic model for visual information displays looking at three levels: information design (based on Edward Tufte’s work), information architecture, and information spaces. Special attention is paid to the use of spatial and navigational metaphors in visual systems as they affect the user’s experience. Especially interesting is how a user creates an “information space” – a mental model of what he has seen, how she keeps track of where she is within a system, and how these activities fit together with the data that is being sought. Mathematics is one area that holds promise for better understanding …

Preference And Perceived Danger As A Function Of The Perceived Curvature, Length, And Width Of Urban Alleys, Thomas R. Herzog, Jennifer A. Flynn-Smith Sep 2001

Preference And Perceived Danger As A Function Of The Perceived Curvature, Length, And Width Of Urban Alleys, Thomas R. Herzog, Jennifer A. Flynn-Smith

Peer Reviewed Articles

Herzog and Miller (1998) reported that people judged alleys with sharper curves as less dangerous than straighter alleys. The authors investigated the role of perceived alley length as a possible confounding influence. Raters judged a large sample of urban alleys for two target variables (preference and danger) and six predictor variables (setting care, mystery, shadow, curvature, length, and width). The partial correlation of danger and curvature, with length partialed out, was not significant. However, in regression analyses controlling for the entire set of predictors, curvature had a modest negative partial relation with preference and a tendency toward a modest positive …
