Sport: The Original Reality Tv - More Death On The Overheated Football Fields, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The latest in the "Survivor" series is currently being filmed in Kenya, where locals are amused and confused by the notion that survival in their everyday environment has been turned into a ludicrous game show by Americans. Indeed the reality television craze seems to be hitting new levels of unreality everyday.

Applying Information Competency To Digital Reference, Lisa A. Ellis, Stephen Francoeur

Publications and Research

Presented at the 67th IFLA Council and General Conference (2001), this paper presents a case for applying information competency (IC) standards to digital reference services at academic libraries. Practical reasons for applying standards or guidelines to e-mail and online chat reference services are given with some insight to the nature of digital reference interactions. The standards that arose from the information competency movement in academic libraries are described and offered as a touchstone for planning and designing digital reference services. The paper concludes with preliminary ideas for how IC standards could be applied to the provision of digital reference.

Hot Topic: Animal Control Law Revised By Legislature, Don Darden Aug 2001

Hot Topic: Animal Control Law Revised By Legislature, Don Darden

MTAS Publications: Hot Topics

As of August 15, 2001: The Tennessee General Assembly recently enacted a new law that repeals the Dog and Cat Humane Death Act [Part 3] in its entirety. It was replaced with Chapter 70, referred to as the Non-livestock Animal Humane Death Act. According to Tennessee Code Annotated§ 39-14- 201, "non-livestock animals" refers to common household pets - dogs, cats, rabbits, chicks, ducks, and even potbellied pigs. The new law applies to public and private agencies, animal shelters, and other facilities operated for the collection, care, and/or euthanasia of stray, neglected, abandoned, or unwanted non-livestock animals. Observations Of Scent-Marking And Discriminating Self From Others By A Domestic Dog (Canis Familiaris): Tales Of Displaced Yellow Snow, Marc Bekoff

Ethology Collection

Little is known about what stimuli trigger urinating or scent-marking in domestic dogs, Canis familiaris, or their wild relatives. While it is often suggested that the urine of other animals influences urinating and scent-marking patterns in canids, this has not been verified experimentally. To investigate the role of urine in eliciting urinating and marking, in this pilot study I moved urine-saturated snow (‘yellow snow’) from place-to-place during five winters to compare the responses of an adult male domestic dog, Jethro, to his own and others’ urine. Jethro spent less time sniffing his own urine than that of other males or …

Is There A Chance For Crop Prices To Rise?, Lynn Lutgen Aug 2001

Is There A Chance For Crop Prices To Rise?, Lynn Lutgen

Cornhusker Economics

By the time USDA released its August 10th report, a large portion of the U.S. had already suffered under several days of 95 plus degree weather. Crop conditions tend to deteriorate under these conditions, and several of the hot days are not reflected in the August 10th report. Corn production is forecast at 9.27 billion bushels, which is down seven percent from last year. Remember, these crop conditions are based on an August 1 date, and will not have the impact of the later days of hot weather in them. Based on the conditions of August 1, yields are now …
