Logical Form And The Vernacular, Reinaldo Elugardo, Robert J. Stainton Aug 2001

Logical Form And The Vernacular, Reinaldo Elugardo, Robert J. Stainton

Robert J. Stainton

Vernacularism is the view that logical forms are fundamentally assigned to natural language expressions, and are only derivatively assigned to anything else, e.g., propositions, mental representations, expressions of symbolic logic, etc. In this paper, we argue that Vernacularism is not as plausible as it first appears because of non-sentential speech. More specifically, there are argument-premises, meant by speakers of non-sentences, for which no natural language paraphrase is readily available in the language used by the speaker and the hearer. The speaker can intend this proposition and the hearer can recover it (and its logical form). Since they cannot, by hypothesis, …

4. Let’S Not Exaggerate The Suggestibility Of Children., Thomas D. Lyon Aug 2001

4. Let’S Not Exaggerate The Suggestibility Of Children., Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

I’m grateful to Dr. Martindale for introducing the reader to an important and lively debate among practitioners and academics over the relevance of recent research on children’s suggestibility. In my Cornell Law Review article, I argued that the recent research on suggestibility was inspired by highly coercive interviewing techniques in widely publicized cases that are not the norm in child sexual abuse investigations. These techniques include telling children that they have been abused, telling children that a particular person is the abuser, and asking children to imagine details regarding how abuse could have taken place. Moreover, I argued that the …

This record, dated August 30, 2001, is a transcript of a follow-up hearing with the Three Affiliated Tribes and Standing Rock Nation to evaluate how the 1992 Equitable Compensation Act has served the tribes and if it has helped restore economic stability. Testimony from tribal members indicates that many promises made prior to the building of the dam were never met, that the promises were met were fulfilled 40-45 years after the dam was built, and, more importantly, that what was lost can never be compensated for with money. A Hermeneutical Study: The Personal Meaning Of The Dying Experience Of Individuals With A Terminal Illness, Maurine E. Mccort

Theses and Graduate Projects

Most research in the study of dying has focused on the attitudes towards death, anxiety surrounding the dying experience, and bereavement. There is scant research done in examining the personal meaning of the dying process of persons with a terminal illness. This study employed the methodology of hermeneutics, a qualitative research design in the study of phenomenology using text. This study used the interpretation of the text from two 60-90 minute in-depth interviews with individuals with a terminal illness to create a deeper understanding of the personal meaning of dying. The findings indicate that the phenomena of dying are an …

This law defines child abuse and sets provisions for reporting, investigating, treating, and preventing child abuse.

This research reveals competition between the provision of treatment and prevention throughout the policy. This competition is driven by two …
