Mark Mcgwire Leaves The Game: His Legacy, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 2001

Mark Mcgwire Leaves The Game: His Legacy, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Mark McGwire has retired. He will be best remembered as the man who broke Roger Maris' single season home run record. He will be remembered in tandem with Sammy Sosa for that wonderful season of 1998 when the two of them chased Roger Maris across the sands of time and then both caught him. He will be remembered for the wonderful scene as he broke Maris' record. He will be remembered as one of the "Bash Brothers" who, along with Jose Canseco, redefined the term "long ball" and became a "murderer's row" of two.

Generating Environmental Knowledge And Inquiry Through Workshop Processes, Peter J. Taylor Nov 2001

Generating Environmental Knowledge And Inquiry Through Workshop Processes, Peter J. Taylor

Working Papers on Science in a Changing World

Since the late-1980s many scholars in Science and Technology Studies have accounted for the validity of scientific knowledge or the effectiveness of technologies by discussing the heterogeneous resources mobilized by diverse agents spanning different realms of social action. In the environmental arena such "heterogeneous construction" is, in effect, self-consciously organized through the frequent use of workshops and other "organized multi-person collaborative processes" (OMPCPs). This paper describes my own process of making sense of the workshop form for generating environmental knowledge and further inquiry. This process was catalyzed by participating during the spring and summer of 2000 in four innovative, interdisciplinary …

The Impact Of Publicly Funded Research On The Structure Of U.S. Agriculture, Jeffrey S. Royer Nov 2001

The Impact Of Publicly Funded Research On The Structure Of U.S. Agriculture, Jeffrey S. Royer

Cornhusker Economics

In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in the concentration of agricultural production in the United States as the number of farming and ranching operations has declined and the average size of those operations has grown. This increased concentration has been accompanied by increased coordination of production and marketing activities through contracting, consolidation and vertical integration. Although independent family farms and ranches have been responsible for most of the nation’s agricultural production historically, small and medium-sized operations are finding it difficult to compete in today’s increasingly industrialized food and agricultural sector.

Psychiatric Diagnosis And Inmate Profiles In A Metropolitan County Jail, Teg W. Mcbride Nov 2001

Psychiatric Diagnosis And Inmate Profiles In A Metropolitan County Jail, Teg W. Mcbride

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

In recent years, there has been an increase in public and professional concern regarding the mentally ill offender in the criminal justice system. Several researchers have identified the need for further investigation of the mentally ill in correctional environments. This research was pai1 of a program evaluation in a large metropolitan county jail. Four main question were investigated: 1. Do inmates identified as mentally ill differ from the general jail population? 2. How consistent are the diagnoses of those identified as mentally in the correctional computer database (SWIS) compared to the diagnoses recorded in the medical records? 3. Is there …
