The framework for this project was a cross-case and cross-site study. The sites were the Jacksonville Pre-trial Detention …

The Impact Of Unmediated Document Delivery On Faculty Use Of Traditional Interlibrary Loan At Wichita State University, Kathy A. Downes, Ted Naylor Jan 2001

The Impact Of Unmediated Document Delivery On Faculty Use Of Traditional Interlibrary Loan At Wichita State University, Kathy A. Downes, Ted Naylor

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

In these times of growing journal prices and shrinking budgets, alternative methods of information access are a necessity. Document delivery services have become an important alternative to providing information access beyond traditional interlibrary loan services. This article analyzes the effect the "unmediated" EbscoDoc document delivery service had on traditional interlibrary loan in a medium sized academic library. Access to the service was provided to faculty members at Wichita State University for a period of approximately two years. Use of the service varied from faculty members who ordered one article to the "super" users who ordered from 100 to 400 documents. …

Collection Development In The New Millennium–Evaluating, Selecting, Annotating, Organizing For Ease Of Access, Reevaluating, And Updating Electronic Resources, Virginia A. Baldwin Jan 2001

Collection Development In The New Millennium–Evaluating, Selecting, Annotating, Organizing For Ease Of Access, Reevaluating, And Updating Electronic Resources, Virginia A. Baldwin

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The literature of the early 1990s suggested changes in the structure of collection management itself in order to accommodate the changes both now occurring and those foreseen. Sheila Creth wrote in 1991 "Until recently, the primary focus of collection development has been on building collections." She outlined the functions of collection management in academic libraries to include: selection of materials, weeding, preservation, liaison with faculty and academic departments, reference and user education, fiscal responsibility, and policy development. Creth saw the necessity for a basic change in the library’s organization structure. "According to the principles of organizational design, the traditional structure …

Values: A Christian Perspective, A Response To Michael Gorman, J. Ray Doerksen Jan 2001

Values: A Christian Perspective, A Response To Michael Gorman, J. Ray Doerksen

The Christian Librarian

Michael Gorman's recent challenge to Christian librarians at the ACL annual conference in San Diego begs for a response. What was the nature of that challenge? It was that we, as Christian librarians, should share values that can be derived completely from a humanistic perspective. It would be surprising if a humanistic perspective could successfully articulate Christian values, and in this case, there is no surprise.

Search Engines Giving You Garbage? Put A "Corc" In It, Implementing The Cooperative Online Resource Catalog, Robert O. Ellett Jr. Jan 2001

Search Engines Giving You Garbage? Put A "Corc" In It, Implementing The Cooperative Online Resource Catalog, Robert O. Ellett Jr.

The Christian Librarian

This paper presents an implementation strategy for adding Internet resources to a library online catalog using OCLC's Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC). Areas of consideration include deciding which electronic resources to include in the online catalog and how to select them. The value and importance of pathfinders in creating electronic bibliographies and the role of library staff in updating them is introduced. Using an electronic suggestion form as a means of Internet resource collection development is another innovative method of enriching library collections. Education and training for cataloging staff on Dublin Core elements is also needed. Attention should be paid …

Reactivity To Social And Nonsocial Challenges In Anolis Carolinensis, Sheetal Vyas Jan 2001

Reactivity To Social And Nonsocial Challenges In Anolis Carolinensis, Sheetal Vyas

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This study is the first of its kind to observe reactivity style, an individual's consistent response to stress, in a non-mammalian vertebrate species. The responses to social and acute nonsocial stressors were investigated using Anolis carolinensis, a small arboreal lizard native to the Southeastern United States. Patterns of stress responses across various contexts were identified. The social stressor involved introducing one lizard to another, while the nonsocial stressors consisted of a Novelty and Restraint test. The lizards' behaviors, perch site selections, and skin color changes were recorded throughout each test. The results demonstrate that the perch height was the …

Attachment Style, Trust, And Exchange Orientation: A Mediational Model, Minzette Peterson Jan 2001

Attachment Style, Trust, And Exchange Orientation: A Mediational Model, Minzette Peterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trust has been related to both attachment theory and exchange orientation. However, the research has not yet addressed whether or not attachment styles are related to exchange orientation, and if they are related, in what way. Attachment theory is divided into two concepts: view of self and view of others. This research was' designed to test whether trust was a mediating variable between view of others and exchange orientation. The measurements were distributed to college students at The University of Maine including the Adult Style Questionnaire, The Trust Scale, and The Revised Exchange Orientation Scale. In all, 94 students returned …

Learning Styles: Teaching Technology Subjects Can Be More Effective, Ronald I. Sutliff, Virginia A. Baldwin Jan 2001

Learning Styles: Teaching Technology Subjects Can Be More Effective, Ronald I. Sutliff, Virginia A. Baldwin

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Learning style theory has been developed and applied in various curricula for all levels of education. Kolb (1985) developed one particular method of assessing student learning style. The use of this method has been documented in the engineering and technology programs of several universities. Variations in learning style due to cultural diversity have been studied and are described in the literature.

This article describes and recommends the use of learning style theory to assess individual learning styles in the classroom and the use of teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles. Sutliff (one of the authors) administered the Learning Style …

Cerebral Substrates Of Musical Imagery, Andrea R. Halpern Jan 2001

Cerebral Substrates Of Musical Imagery, Andrea R. Halpern

Faculty Journal Articles

Musical imagery refers to the experience of "replaying" music by imagining it inside the head. Whereas visual imagery has been extensively studied, few people have investigated imagery in the auditory domain. This article reviews a program of research that has tried to characterize auditory imagery for music using both behavioral and cognitive neuroscientific tools. I begin by describing some of my behavioral studies of the mental analogues of musical tempo, pitch, and temporal extent. I then describe four studies using three techniques that examine the correspondence of brain involvement in actually perceiving vs. imagining familiar music. These involve one lesion …

Sexual Harassment Policies And Procedures In South Florida Community Colleges: Perceived Affects On Teaching Learning, Lyn J. Pont Jan 2001

Sexual Harassment Policies And Procedures In South Florida Community Colleges: Perceived Affects On Teaching Learning, Lyn J. Pont

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purposes of this research were to determine: 1.) if sexual harassment policies, content, communication and subsequent related training, or lack thereof, subject South Florida community colleges to legal risk; and 2.) the perceptions of how sexual harassment policies and procedures affect students and faculty, their interactions, and how students learn and how faculty teaches, being mindful of a possible cultural component.

In determining if the sexual harassment policies and training subjected the colleges to legal risk, a sexual harassment policy and procedural grid was used to analyze the policies in place at all four South Florida community colleges. The …

“No Problem, Mon”: Strategies Used To Promote Reggae Music As Jamaica’S Cultural Heritage, Stephen King, P. Renee Foster Jan 2001

“No Problem, Mon”: Strategies Used To Promote Reggae Music As Jamaica’S Cultural Heritage, Stephen King, P. Renee Foster

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This paper examines efforts by the Jamaican government and its surrogates to control the Rastafarian movement and reggae music. Since the 1970s, the Jamaican establishment has employed an adjustment tactic, co-optation, to transform reggae music and Rastafari into a cultural attraction. In recent years, however, Rastafarian images and reggae have become increasingly important in the promotion of Jamaica’s tourist industry. The Jamaican government and its supporters have marketed the Rastafarian movement and reggae music as part of Jamaica’s “cultural heritage.” As a result, the Rastafarian movement has declined as a political and social force in Jamaica. In sum, reggae and …

An Econometric Look At Inefficiency Among Us States, 1977-1986, Gregory J. Brock Jan 2001

An Econometric Look At Inefficiency Among Us States, 1977-1986, Gregory J. Brock

Finance and Economics Faculty Publications

U.S. states during the 1977-1986 business cycle are found to have small but significant technical inefficiency in the private sector. Inefficiency is influenced by several factors, including prior economic performance, location, Hicks labor augmenting technical progress in the manufacturing sector in an earlier 1970s period, college graduation, and income inequality. The existence of a monetary channel, urban agglomeration, and a high school diploma "sheepskin" effect for improved technical efficiency are rejected. Results from earlier studies using noneconometric methods to measure technical efficiency are independently confirmed, indicating that interstate technical inefficiency exists and can be measured using both parametric and nonparametric …

The Importance Of Early Successional Habitats To Rare, Restricted-Range, And Endangered Birds In The Ecuadorian Andes, Mark R. Welford Jan 2001

The Importance Of Early Successional Habitats To Rare, Restricted-Range, And Endangered Birds In The Ecuadorian Andes, Mark R. Welford

School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Since the mid-1980s, exhausted pastures in Ecuador have been increasingly abandoned, allowing forest regeneration. At approximately 2,200 m in the Tandayapa valley I surveyed four abandoned pastures to evaluate their use by birds. Each former pasture represented a different age of vegetation maturity. The number of bird species recorded in each successively older abandoned pasture increased but only half the number of species recorded in the undisturbed forest site was recorded in the most mature pasture. However, at least four restricted-range bird species were recorded in a single pasture. As pastures rapidly convert to secondary forest, more bird species and …

Nominal Loss Aversion, Housing Equity Constraints, And Household Mobility: Evidence From The United States, Gary Engelhardt Jan 2001

Nominal Loss Aversion, Housing Equity Constraints, And Household Mobility: Evidence From The United States, Gary Engelhardt

Center for Policy Research

This paper exploits the significant recent variation in United States house prices to empirically examine the effect on housing equity constraints and nominal loss aversion on household mobility. The analysis uses unique, detailed data from 1985-1996 on household characteristics, mobility, and wealth from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) matched with house price data from 149 metropolitan areas to estimate semiparametric proportional hazard models of intra- and inter-metropolitan mobility. There are five principal findings: (1) household intra-metropolitan own-to-own mobility responds differently to nominal housing losses than to gains; (2) nominal loss aversion is significantly less pronounced in intra-metropolitan own-to-rent …

Can Policy Changes Be Treated As Natural Experiments? Evidence From State Excise Taxes, Jeffrey D. Kubik, John R. Moran Jan 2001

Can Policy Changes Be Treated As Natural Experiments? Evidence From State Excise Taxes, Jeffrey D. Kubik, John R. Moran

Center for Policy Research

An important issue in public policy analysis is the potential endogeneity of the policies under study. If policy changes constitute responses on the part of political decision-makers to changes in a variable of interest, then standard analyses that treat policy changes as natural experiments may yield biased estimates of the impact of the policy (Besley and Case 2000). We examine the extent to which such political endogeneity biases conventional fixed effects estimates of behavioral parameters by identifying the elasticities of demand for cigarettes and beer using the timing of state legislative elections as an instrument for changes in state excise …
