Age And Neuropsychological Status Following Exposure To Violent Nonimpact Acceleration Forces In Mvas, James Sweeney, Andrew Johnson

Andrew M. Johnson

Performance on the Halstead-ReitanNeuropsychological Test Battery (HRB) was analyzed for 33 ind viduals, aged 20 to 69, who had been subjected to violent aceeleration forces in motor vehicle accidents . Age was considered as a continuous variable and correlated with single and compos ite HRB measures. With the one exception of the Left Neuropsychological Deficit Scale (NDS) score, agere lated de cline was consistently demonstrated by com positeHRB scores (i.e., Gen eralNDS, Right NDS, Level of Performance NDS, Pathognomonic SignNDS, Pattern NDS, Right-Left Differ enceNDS, and Halstead Impairment Index). In contrast, most single non-composite HRB measures did not refleet a …

The Status Of The Uniform Guidelines On Employee Selection Procedures: Legal Developments And Future Prospects, Andrew Ewoh, James Guseh Dec 2000

The Status Of The Uniform Guidelines On Employee Selection Procedures: Legal Developments And Future Prospects, Andrew Ewoh, James Guseh

Andrew I.E. Ewoh

This article examines the legal status of the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures from the perspectives of judicial opinions and race-norming provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1991. Specifically, the analysis provides a discussion of important U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions with special emphasis on their relevance for disparate impact theory. Because the 1991 Civil Rights Act has altered the selection procedures somewhat, the article offers implications of these changes for personnel managers or specialists and recommends modification of the Uniform Guidelines.

Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren: Are They At Increased Risk Of Health Problems, Deborah Whitley, Susan Kelley Dec 2000

Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren: Are They At Increased Risk Of Health Problems, Deborah Whitley, Susan Kelley

Deborah M. Whitley

Many grandparents faced with the need to raise their grandchildren have health risks that could destabilize any family structure established for the child. This is especially problematic for grandparents of color who have higher health risk factors than their white counterparts. This article describes the physical and mental health status and behaviors of 100 African American grandmothers who are the primary caretakers for their grandchildren. The findings suggest the physical functioning of the grandmothers is at a level that could jeopardize the quality of life with their grandchildren. In spite of their diminished physical capacity, the grandmothers reported that their …

Music, Womankind And Patriarchy: Women Break Music Industry Ideological Myths, Ann Savage Dec 2000

Music, Womankind And Patriarchy: Women Break Music Industry Ideological Myths, Ann Savage

Ann M. Savage

This paper challenges mainstream music industry myths suggesting that women, because of their gender, are not discriminating music listeners. As part of a larger interpretive audience study, fifteen women were interviewed about their relationship with female rock artists who embody a feminist and/or political sensibility. The findings explored in this paper suggest that women are clearly capable of cultivating abilities to appreciate music and cite complex sound, substantive lyrics and professional autonomy as some of their favored distinctions. Moreover, women were quite cognizant of the music industry's monolithic condescending view of not only themselves as fans, but of female musical …

Conversational Borderlands: Language And Identity In An Alternative Urban High School, Betsy Rymes Dec 2000

Conversational Borderlands: Language And Identity In An Alternative Urban High School, Betsy Rymes

Betsy Rymes

This groundbreaking study of an innovative charter school is the first to look closely at adolescent identity by analyzing the language of narratives told in school. The author helps us to understand why adolescents sometimes make choices that seem incomprehensible to the adults who work with them. This unique book links issues of school reform with close analysis of language and interaction within a school to help us understand the needs and desires of some of today’s diverse adolescent students. Both compelling and illuminating, this important book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the human effects (and not …

Applying Xml To The Bibliographic Description, David Fiander Dec 2000

Applying Xml To The Bibliographic Description, David Fiander

David J Fiander

Over the past few years there has been a significant amount of work in the area of cataloging internet resources, primarily us- ing new metadata standards like the Dublin Core, but there has been little work on applying new data description formats like SGML and XML to traditional cataloging practices. What little work has been done in the area of using SGML and XML for traditional bibliographic description has primarily been based on the concept of converting MARC tagging into XML tagging. I suggest that, rather than attempting to convert exist- ing MARC tagging into a new syntax based on …

Couples Therapy: A Cornerstone Approach, Linda Berg-Cross Dec 2000

Couples Therapy: A Cornerstone Approach, Linda Berg-Cross

Linda Berg-Cross

Harness the power of an integrative approach to couples counseling!

Why do marriages fail? The behaviorist or cognitive therapist explains that unhappy couples have self-defeating ways of thinking about their spouses and themselves. The sociologically oriented counselor points to the impact of social trends and dramatic changes in child-rearing and social expectations. A therapist oriented toward psychodynamics or systems theory sees the destructive patterns of childhood replayed in the marriage, with spouses taking on rigid roles. The pastoral or humanist counselor believes that partners who cannot experience self-fulfillment through commitment and trust will feel less love and grow more and …

Sweet Harmonies From Little Wooden Boxes: Mandolin Playing In Minneapolis And St. Paul, Amy M. Shaw Dec 2000

Sweet Harmonies From Little Wooden Boxes: Mandolin Playing In Minneapolis And St. Paul, Amy M. Shaw

Amy M. Shaw

The mandolin, initially popularized by Italian immigrants, became hugely popular in the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis between 1890 and 1920. The instrument attracted musicians of both sexes from various ethnic and socioeconomic groups, many of whom joined mandolin orchestras. Because it was affordable and relatively easy to play, many amateur musicians were drawn to the mandolin, but a number of professional mandolinists in the area were highly respected as teachers and soloists. Recurrent Issues In Efforts To Prevent Homicidal Violence In Schools: Expert Opinions, Richard E. Redding, Karen E. Dill, Peter K. Smithh, Ray Surette, Dewey Cornell

Richard E. Redding

The purpose of this article is to consider four issues that are raised repeatedly by public policy makers, educators, and juvenile justice authorities in seeking ways to prevent youth violence in general and homicidal attacks on schools in particular. The first topic, bullying, has received great attention because many youth involved in school shootings and other violent attacks at school have been victims of bullying. The two boys who carried out the Columbine shootings cast themselves as champions of victims of bullying in their videos and writings, some still available on the Internet. The second topic concerns the influence of …

Parents' Attempts At 'Protection' Do Children No Favors In Long Run, Michael E Lewyn Dec 2000

Parents' Attempts At 'Protection' Do Children No Favors In Long Run, Michael E Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

Some parents keep their children locked up inside Mommy's car and house until they learn to drive, fearing that their children will not be safe outside. But car accidents have killed far more children than pedophiles - a fact which suggest that the dangers of too little freedom may exceed the dangers of too much freedom.

In Exps 1 and 2, a fixed amount of external food was provided in different conditions, whereas in Exps 3 and 4, both earned and total food intake were fixed to a daily maximum. Consumption and responding decreased with availability compared to nonavailability of external food and systematically declined with increasing amounts of …

Suicidal Ideation And Help-Negation: Not Just Hopelessness Or Prior Help., Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2000

Suicidal Ideation And Help-Negation: Not Just Hopelessness Or Prior Help., Coralie J. Wilson

Frank Deane

Few distressed young people seek professional psychological help and little is known about what sources of help young people seek for different problems. In suicidal youth, poor help-seeking may be exacerbated by the process of help-negation. The current study is the first of a larger program of PhD research developed and led by the second author. In the current study, three hundred and two undergraduate university students completed a questionnaire measuring suicidal ideation, hopelessness, prior help-seeking experience, and help-seeking intentions. Participants indicated they would seek help from different sources of help for different types of problems, but friends were consistently …

Serum Leptin Levels And Anthropometric Correlates In Ache Amerindians Of Eastern Paraguay, Richard G. Bribiescas Dec 2000

Serum Leptin Levels And Anthropometric Correlates In Ache Amerindians Of Eastern Paraguay, Richard G. Bribiescas

Richard G. Bribiescas

Leptin is a recently discovered peptide hor- mone secreted primarily from adipocytes in humans and other mammals; it is a reflection of fat stores, and has been associated with reproductive function. However, few leptin measurements are available from nonindustrialized popula- tions, including contemporary hunter/gatherer communities undergoing the transition to sedentary agriculture. This in- vestigation reports single-sample serum leptin measure- ments in healthy Ache Amerindian males (n 􏱕 21; average age, 32.8 􏱣 3.4 SE) and females (n 􏱕 12; average age, 31.3 􏱣 4.3) in eastern Paraguay. Ache leptin concentrations were much lower than in industrialized populations, although significant sexual …
