Symbolic Closure Through Memory, Reparation And Revenge In Post-Conflict Societies, Brandon Hamber, Richard A. Wilson Mar 2002

Symbolic Closure Through Memory, Reparation And Revenge In Post-Conflict Societies, Brandon Hamber, Richard A. Wilson

Research Papers

Countries going through democratic transition have to address how they will deal with the human rights crimes committed during the authoritarian era. In the context of amnesty for perpetrators, truth commissions have emerged as a standard institution to document the violent past. Increasingly, claims are made that truth commissions have beneficial psychological consequences; that is, that they facilitate 'catharsis', or 'heal the nation', or allow the nation to 'work through' a violent past. This article draws upon trauma counseling experience and anthropological fieldwork among survivors to challenge these claims in the context of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. …

Using Reasons For Living To Connect To American Indian Healing Traditions, Thomas L. Crofoot Graham Mar 2002

Using Reasons For Living To Connect To American Indian Healing Traditions, Thomas L. Crofoot Graham

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Responding to high rates of suicide for American Indian youth, helping professionals often struggle to connect healing traditions from American Indian cultures to tools from European psychology. The differences between American Indian healing and European therapy can be vast. Finding connections or building bridges between these two perspectives may be more difficult than it appears (Duran & Duran, 1995). One method to bring together these worldviews is to use the Reasons for Living Questionnaire (RFL, Linehan, Goldstein, Nielsen, & Chiles, 1983); the Reasons for Living Inventory for Adolescents (RFL-A, Osman, Downs, Kopper, Barios, Besett, Linehan, Baker, & Osman, 1998), or …

Race, Welfare Reform, And Nonprofit Organizations, Michael Reisch, David Sommerfeld Mar 2002

Race, Welfare Reform, And Nonprofit Organizations, Michael Reisch, David Sommerfeld

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article presents research on the impact of welfare reform on 90 nonprofit organizations in Southeast Michigan. Utilizing a refined survey instrument, in-depth interviews and focus groups with agency executives and staff, and the analysis of agency documents, it assesses how the racial characteristics of agencies' client populations affected the organizational consequences of welfare reform. The study confirmed that welfare reform has affected the ability of nonprofit organizations to meet the increased expectations generated by recent legislation. These effects have been particularly pronounced among agencies serving a high proportion of racial minority clients.

中國大陸加入 Wto 後政府職能之變遷 : 調適與挑戰, 陳德昇 Mar 2002

中國大陸加入 Wto 後政府職能之變遷 : 調適與挑戰, 陳德昇

CAPS Working Paper Series

Bertrand Competition Under Uncertainty, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Maarten Janssen Mar 2002

Bertrand Competition Under Uncertainty, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Maarten Janssen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Consider a Bertrand model in which each firm may be inactive with a known probability, so the number of active firms is uncertain. This simple model has a mixed-strategy equilibrium in which industry profits are positive and decline with the number of firms, the same features which make the Cournot model attractive. Unlike in a Cournot model with similar incomplete information, Bertrand profits always increase in the probability other firms are inactive. Profits do decline more sharply than in the Cournot model, and the pattern is similar to that found by Bresnahan & Reiss (1991).

ALTERNATIVES Throughout history, information has helped move our society forward. It has brought us new technology, cures to our ailments and more knowledge about the world around us. As an extremely curious person, I often find myself sorting through options and asking myself — what will work best for me?

Three stories are featured in this issue exploring alternative methods. Our cover story, “A small assistant,” (page 16) looks at a less conventional therapy for arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis patients. Mothers In The Media: Blamed And Celebrated -- An Examination Of Drug Abuse And Multiple Births., Sonya Charles, Tricha Shivas

Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications

The media has always had a profound interest in mothers and birth stories. This study examined the difference between media portrayal of 'good' mothers and 'bad' mothers. Did the media cover potential harm to fetuses and would-be children in the same way for two groups of mothers: (a) pregnant women addicted to illicit drugs and (b) women who chose to continue a high-order, multiple birth pregnancy? Two searches were conducted on Lexis-Nexis, one with keywords 'McCaughey and birth' and another with the keywords 'pregnancy and illegal drugs.' A total of 210 articles were coded for the McCaughey search, and 90 …
