Klipsun Magazine, 2002, Volume 32, Issue 02 - January, Jennifer Collins

Klipsun Magazine

Former New York Times Sunday editor Lester Markle once said, "What you see is the news, what you know is background and what you feel is opinion."As a magazine staff, our job is to "see the news" — to scope with watchful eyes for newsworthy stories that will interest our readers.

This quarter’s Klipsun staff sought stories with this mission in mind. In "Pay Attention," a reporter interviewed a Western student who sells her own prescribed Attention Deficit Disorder drugs, Ritalin and Adderall, to students who decide they need the additional help while studying late at night. In "The Lab …

The Christian Reformed Church Periodical Index: A Local Solution To Indexing Periodicals, Greg Sennema

Library Publications

This article describes the creation of a web-based database that indexes less well-known periodical titles of importance to scholars in the Christian Reformed Church, and generally not covered by other indexing services. The author explains how the data from the index, originally stored in a card catalog, was moved online to a text-based system, and eventually into its present form in a web-based system. Highlighting some of the challenges that were overcome in creating this resource, brief details are provided on how the data is stored and retrieved in the web environment, on how the data are searched and presented …

The Cleveland State University Library Special Collections digitization and cataloging efforts use staff from several different library organizational units. The collaboration of staff with specific expertise in long-standing library functions -- special collections, cataloging, systems, archives, selection -- to create two Web databases is described. Housing First: Documenting The Need For Permanent Supportive Housing (Executive Summary), Susan Hertzler Burkholder, Kathryn W. Hexter

Five years ago, very few people would have believed that it was possible to end homelessness for the most marginalized Americans. Today, the idea that we can end the cycle of homelessness and institutionalization for vulnerable Americans is so mainstream that the Bush administration declared in its 2003 budget proposal that it considers “ending chronic homelessness in the next decade a top objective.” The key to this turnaround in thinking is supportive housing, an approach that is both smart and compassionate” according to a recent editorial in the New York Times. It is a concept that is proving to be …

Itf Enhancing Human Security Annual Report 2002, Itf-Enhancy Human Security

Global CWD Repository

When first established by the Slovenian government in March 1998, ITF was to assist Bosnia and Herzegovina in solving its landmine problem, and help surviving landmine victims with physical-social rehabilitation and reintegration. However, as BiH was not the only country in the region affected by landmines (see Mine and UXO threat in SE Europe), it was only fair to spread its operations to all other mine-affected countries in SE Europe as well. Presently, ITF is working in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro.

ITF seeks to attract public and private donors for Mine Action related activities …

The Corinthian

This study attempts to understand the differences in activity among an emergent television/Internet audience. The Internet has provided a new entertainment opportunity for producers of television programming. Those television viewers who have also reached out to their favorite television show websites have resulted in a new audience. Examining the programming genre of reality television, two constructs were developed and a written survey administered to a convenience sample of college freshmen. The construct "dual users" was created to examine the television audience that also visits television programming websites. Single users (those that only watch the television show) were compared to the …
