Authentic Activities And Online Learning, Ron Oliver, Janice Herrington, Thomas Reeves Jan 2002

Authentic Activities And Online Learning, Ron Oliver, Janice Herrington, Thomas Reeves

Research outputs pre 2011

There has been a renewed interest in the role of student activities within course units as constructivist philosophy and advances in technology impact on educational design and practice. This paper proposes ten characteristics of authentic activities, based on a substantial body of educational theory and research, which can assist teachers to design more authentic activities for online learning environments. The paper includes a short review of the literature, together with the list of characteristics attributed to appropriate authors and theorists. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the affordances of Internet technologies can facilitate the operationalisation of authentic activities …

Designing For Reflection In Online Courses, Ron Oliver, Janice Herrington Jan 2002

Designing For Reflection In Online Courses, Ron Oliver, Janice Herrington

Research outputs pre 2011

Reflection can be described as both an individually-mediated and a socially-mediated process. In this paper we describe an online unit in a Graduate Certificate of Online Learning that has been designed to enhance the opportunities for students to reflect on their learning. Rather than being promoted as a learning strategy to supplement the unit curriculum, reflection has been integrated fully within the course design. Students are encouraged to reflect as they complete their chosen project (reflection-in-action) and in a more sustained and extended manner (reflection-on-action) as they write up their experiences in an article of publishable quality. The technology and …

A Typology For Identifying Teachers' Progress In Ict Uptake, Barnard Clarkson, Ron Oliver Jan 2002

A Typology For Identifying Teachers' Progress In Ict Uptake, Barnard Clarkson, Ron Oliver

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper describes the design of an instrument to help identify teachers' level of ICT uptake. The instrument takes the form of a typology matrix comprising four stages in ICT uptake across a continuum describing teachers' levels of dependence. Identification of teachers' positions in the typology matrix is determined by their affective, cognitive and demonstrated states of ICT application and use. The paper describes the process of determining the position of two elementary school teachers within the typology and discusses the reliability and validity of the instrument and the placement process.

Open Online Assessment: Keeping The Tutors Honest!, Corri Barrett, Joseph Luca Jan 2002

Open Online Assessment: Keeping The Tutors Honest!, Corri Barrett, Joseph Luca

Research outputs pre 2011

Tutors often find it difficult to mark consistently across all students in their classes. Students will occasionally complain about marking inconsistencies noticed when they compare assignments. The task of maintaining consistency in marking becomes much more difficult when all students can openly see everybody’s solutions, marks and tutors’ comments. This task becomes even more difficult when the marking of tutors from other classes is also available to be seen openly. This case study describes a learning environment that had four tutors in four separate classes with a total of 85 students. Students were required to post solutions to an online …

Experiential Learning On-Line: The Role Of Asynchronous Communication Tools, Catherine E Mcloughlin, Joseph Luca

Research outputs pre 2011

The needs of learners are changing rapidly and continually in response to an environment that is characterised by change at economic, political and technological levels. There is greater pressure on universities to work more closely with employers in contributing to the process of economic development through the creation of a skilled workforce. Universities are becoming increasingly flexible in their responses to meeting the lifelong learning agenda. Online experiential learning is an essential element in the move towards more situated and professional orientations and with the drive to providing students with real world working knowledge. Asynchronous communication tools and tasks are …

Did The World Really Change On 9/11?, Lelia Rosalind Green Jan 2002

Did The World Really Change On 9/11?, Lelia Rosalind Green

Research outputs pre 2011

In setting myself the question 'Did the world really change an 9/11 ?', I tie myself into two discussions. The first is an exercise in comparing and contrasting perceptions around the pivotal date of September 11, 2001: what was the world 'really' like prior to the attacks on America (as they came to be called) and what is it 'really' like now? The use of the word 'really' here flags the operation of value judgements; any estimation of change around this event is laden with personal perspectives. The second discussion is the one I deal with first: is there a …

Formalising The Description Of Learning Designs, Ron Oliver, Barry Harper, John Hedberg, Sandra Wills, Shirley Agostinho Jan 2002

Formalising The Description Of Learning Designs, Ron Oliver, Barry Harper, John Hedberg, Sandra Wills, Shirley Agostinho

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper describes an activity being undertaken by researchers involved in the AUTC funded Project: Information and Communication Technologies and Their Role in Flexible Learning. The project is seeking to investigate and develop generic and reusable frameworks for the provision of technology-enhanced high quality learning experiences in higher education. To achieve this, the researchers have been exploring ways to formalise generic descriptions of some learning designs that foster knowledge construction and problem solving. This paper provides a summary of the work that has been undertaken and describes the generic descriptions that have been developed in this process.

Successful Teamwork: A Case Study, Pina Tarricone, Joseph Luca Jan 2002

Successful Teamwork: A Case Study, Pina Tarricone, Joseph Luca

Research outputs pre 2011

Why are some teams successful and others unsuccessful? What criteria or attributes are needed for success? Contemporary teaching and learning practice over the past few years in higher education institutions has seen a proliferation of open-ended constructivist learning designs that incorporate collaboration. This has promoted the need for identifying essential attributes needed for successful teamwork. This study reviews the literature with a view of identifying a framework that educators can use to help promote effective teamwork in their classes. A case study is used to investigate two teams of final year multimedia students completing a project-based unit, in which teamwork …

Managing Semantic Content For The Web, Amit P. Sheth, Clemens Bertram, David Avant, Brian Hammond, Krzysztof Kochut, Yashodhan Warke

Kno.e.sis Publications

By associating meaning with content, the Semantic Web will facilitate search, interoperability, and the composition of complex applications. A recent Scientific American article described the Semantic Web as 'an extension of the current Web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation.' Not long ago, researchers at a Stanford University symposium predicted that this second phase of the Web would be as revolutionary as the Web itself.

Authorization And Access Control Of Application Data In Workflow Systems, Shengli Wu, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller, Zongwei Luo Jan 2002

Authorization And Access Control Of Application Data In Workflow Systems, Shengli Wu, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller, Zongwei Luo

Kno.e.sis Publications

Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs) are used to support the modeling and coordinated execution of business processes within an organization or across organizational boundaries. Although some research efforts have addressed requirements for authorization and access control for workflow systems, little attention has been paid to the requirements as they apply to application data accessed or managed by WfMSs. In this paper, we discuss key access control requirements for application data in workflow applications using examples from the healthcare domain, introduce a classification of application data used in workflow systems by analyzing their sources, and then propose a comprehensive data authorization and …

Reliability Assessment Of Surface Archaeologigal Survey Results From Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Melissa Kruse Jan 2002

Reliability Assessment Of Surface Archaeologigal Survey Results From Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Melissa Kruse

Nebraska Anthropologist

Surface archaeological data provides a wealth of readily available and easily accessible information about past human behavior and settlement systems. It is important that survey results of suiface remains be recorded accurately and provide reliable information for interpretation of regional artifact distributions, density, and variations of the archeological record. A resurvey methodology was developed to assess the reliability of results of the Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey along the coast of southern Turkey. Analysis employed statistical quantification and an overview of factors effecting reliability of surface survey results. The resulting duplicated documents of the same suiface record at different points in …

Analyzing Anthropogenic Landscapes With Gis And Remote Sensing: A Literature Review, Andi O. Kraft Jan 2002

Analyzing Anthropogenic Landscapes With Gis And Remote Sensing: A Literature Review, Andi O. Kraft

Nebraska Anthropologist

Anthropogenic landscapes are those that have been modified, to varying degrees, by human. Their development is affected by the over-use of natural landscapes in the past such as overgrazing, frequent fires, or excessive depletion of forests. Anthropologists analyzing land-use intensification are now realizing the promise of geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensingfor their research. A literature review of case studies done on varying anthropogenic landscapes will highlight how GIS can give practical integration of geographic spatial structures (habitation, soils, river drainage) to past and current relationships between the environment and human systems when combined with local-level knowledge. Research of …

Foreign Government Complicity In Human Trafficking: A Review Of The State Department's "2002 Trafficking In Persons Report", U.S. House Of Representatives Committee On International Relations

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

The Smith-Gejdenson Act provides a comprehensive plan for putting an end to modern-day slavery. A key component of this plan is the State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons Report. This report is intended to inform the President and the Congress about which foreign governments are making serious efforts to combat the most egregious forms of trafficking in persons—the buying and selling of women and children into the international sex industry, and the trafficking of men, women, and children alike into slavery and involuntary servitude—and which governments are failing to make such efforts.

At today’s hearing, the Committee will hear …

Continuing In Overtime: Women Of Retirement Age Who Are Still At Work, Elizabeth Johns Jan 2002

Continuing In Overtime: Women Of Retirement Age Who Are Still At Work, Elizabeth Johns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the experiences of retirement-age Maine women (age 65 or older) who are still in the workforce. According to the U.S. Census, just 10 percent of women in this age group were in the national workforce in the year 2000. Yet various socioeconomic factors suggest that more older workers will stay at work longer, reversing a long-standing trend toward earlier retirement. For women, such factors include improved health and longevity; concentration in the low-wage work sector; career interruptions; the high incidence of divorce; inadequate retirement savings; and personal investment in careers. Thus, the experiences of today's older working …

Male Childhood Sexual Abuse : Do Not Overlook It, Elizabeth Soenen

Graduate Research Papers

Male childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is often unrecognized and under-reported; therefore, its symptoms are often left untreated. The research reveals it is more prevalent than previously thought and is accompanied by a variety of maladaptive symptoms. Clinicians' awareness of these findings, along with self-awareness of their own beliefs about male CSA, is likely to lead to identification of its presence and the opportunity to choose appropriate interventions.

Fossils On The Prairie.Pdf, Chris Laingen Jan 2002

Fossils On The Prairie.Pdf, Chris Laingen

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Between 1935 and 1992, the number of farms in the United States decreased from approximately seven million to fewer than two million. This change left a noticeable imprint on the landscape. Working farmsteads have been reduced to idle, desolate buildings, or in some cases there are no buildings left at all. To study this transformation, black and white air photographs from 1950 were compared with 1990 air photographs. Also, plat books and ground checks in four townships in Watonwan County in southwestern Minnesota helped document changes. Farmsteads were abandoned or demolished because people began to find they could not economically …

Training Service Providers On Emergency Contraception: Lessons Learned From An Or Study, M.E. Khan, Sharif M.I. Hossain

Reproductive Health

The Bangladesh Directorate of Family Planning in collaboration with the Population Council, Pathfinder International, and John Snow, Inc. is conducting an operations research project to test the feasibility of introducing emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) in the national family planning (FP) program and to answer operational questions on implementing the use of ECP efficiently. In Bangladesh, 1.2 million births are unplanned and the number of menstrual regulation/abortions is increasing. ECP could be a good reproductive health intervention for women since it gives them a chance to avoid unwanted pregnancy. ECP does not induce abortion. In fact, it helps in reducing the …

Somatic Complaints And Health Care Utilization In Children Exposed To Violence, Kellie Ann Hilker Jan 2002

Somatic Complaints And Health Care Utilization In Children Exposed To Violence, Kellie Ann Hilker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the United States, violence has been referred to as a public health epidemic and violence exposure of our youth is a particularly serious national concern. Numerous negative outcomes are associated with both child victimization and violence exposure including externalizing problems, internalizing symptoms, and poor academic performance. Somatic complaints, which have been associated with internalizing symptoms, have been found as well; however, physical complaints have not been studied in depth. Additionally, health care utilization is an area that is not widely studied in pediatric psychology, but positive associations between posttraumatic stress disorder and increased health care utilization has been found …

The Role Of Attention In Affect Perception: An Examination Of Mirsky's Four Factor Model Of Attention In Chronic Schizophrenia, Dennis R. Combs Jan 2002

The Role Of Attention In Affect Perception: An Examination Of Mirsky's Four Factor Model Of Attention In Chronic Schizophrenia, Dennis R. Combs

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Attention and affect perception was examined in a sample of sixty-five persons with chronic schizophrenia. Attentional skills may be related to deficits in affect perception due to a lack of attention to important information contained in the face. Deficits of this sort can dramatically inhibit appropriate social functioning. However, there is a lack of empirical research on this topic. Mirsky's four factor model of attention was used as a broad-based assessment of attentional functioning. The four factors of attention were: 1) Focus-Execute, 2) Encode, 3) Sustain, and 4) Shift. Neuropsychological measures reflective of attentional factor were administered. In this study, …

The Division Of Domestic Labor In Taiwanese Households, Chiung-Yin Hu Jan 2002

The Division Of Domestic Labor In Taiwanese Households, Chiung-Yin Hu

LSU Master's Theses

Using the 1995-1996 Taiwan Social Survey, this research applied major perspectives developed in the United States, the economic resources model and the gender ideology model, to the division of household labor in Taiwan, where gender norms have been strongly influenced by traditional patriarchal thinking while rapid economic growth in the past two decades has improved women’s socioeconomic status. The results show that while men’s economic resources and the gender ideology can explain their housework participation relatively well, the same variables for women explained their share of the housework rather poorly. I also examined the gender display/deviance neutralization model but failed …
