Control Of Food Intake And Body Weight Following Smoking Cessation In Premenopausal Women, Jamie Lynn Neal
Control Of Food Intake And Body Weight Following Smoking Cessation In Premenopausal Women, Jamie Lynn Neal
LSU Master's Theses
Women experience more weight gain than men postcessation and are more aware of nicotine’s weight suppressing effects than men. Postcessation weight gain in women can be largely accounted for by significant increases in high fat foods from pre- to postcessation. Overeating found in the luteal phase, further compounds the increased caloric intake found postcessation. Few studies have evaluated the long-term effects of smoking cessation on macronutrient content and weight gain; and most have relied on self-report data. This study used the Macronutrient Self-Selection Paradigm (MSSP) and Food Preference Questionnaire (FPQ) to assess food intake in 17 women in the luteal …

Philippine Development: A Research Journey Through The Philippine Journal Of Development, Fernando T. Aldaba
Economics Department Faculty Publications
After 27 years of existence, the Philippine Journal of Development (PJD) is considered one of the longest running journals in the country. First published in 1974, the PJD started as a semestral publication of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and was called the NEDA Journal of Development. The Journal aimed to serve as a vehicle to disseminate the important factors affecting the development process as well as a forum where development issues could be discussed from the larger perspectives of the social sciences. With the founding of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the management of the …

The Effects Of Implicit, Explicit, And Synergistic Training On Learning An Artificial Grammar, Thomas James Domangue
The Effects Of Implicit, Explicit, And Synergistic Training On Learning An Artificial Grammar, Thomas James Domangue
LSU Master's Theses
Participants were trained to generate exemplars of an artificial grammar by bubbling-in letters from exemplars (implicit training), observing a diagram of the grammar then reproducing it (explicit training), or tracing the path of exemplars through a diagram of the grammar (synergistic training). Performance was measured using a cued-generate task. It provided a template for an exemplar with two letters filled in. Participants attempted to generate exemplars that fit the template. The computer corrected the exemplar when it matched at least 70% of the letters in a valid string. Results showed that both explicit and synergistic training led to generation of …
Corporate America And Web Access For The Blind: Are Public Relations Practioners Communicating With The Blind Public?, Jenice Daigle
Corporate America And Web Access For The Blind: Are Public Relations Practioners Communicating With The Blind Public?, Jenice Daigle
LSU Master's Theses
Advances in technology have given the blind public a new voice in corporate America. Today, blind individuals are able to utilize the Internet independently using screen access software. However, like ramps for wheelchairs in physical spaces, Web site accommodations are needed in cyberspace for successful use. A review of the current literature indicates trends in public relations are shifting toward a corporate ethic of social responsibility, but on-line concerns for the disabled are not clearly demonstrated among the leading corporations in the United States. The purpose of this research is to determine if blind consumers are being accommodated on corporate …
The Perceptions Of And Attitudes Toward Partner Abuse Among First Generation Korean-Americans: Their Relationships To The Incidence Of Partner Abuse, Bonnie Ahn
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the perceptions of and attitudes toward partner abuse, and various demographic characteristics on the incidence of partner abuse among first generation Korean-Americans. The study employed a correlational explanatory design using a cross-sectional survey technique utilizing a total of 223 Korean immigrant adults currently residing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A three-part instrument was used for data colleciton. Part I of the instrument measured the perceptions of and attitudes toward domestic violence among Korean-Americans. Part II measured the incedence and nature of domestic violence, and part III inquired demographic information about …
General Strain Theory And Social Support: A Study Of African Americans, Jason Alan Lyons
General Strain Theory And Social Support: A Study Of African Americans, Jason Alan Lyons
LSU Master's Theses
Agnew’s (1992) general strain theory (GST) has gained increasing attention and empirical support for the effects of strain on negative emotions and deviant coping. However, previous research provides inconsistent results about (1) the effects of negative emotions on deviant coping, (2) the significance of social support in GST, and (3) gender differences and GST. This paper addresses these issues by testing hypotheses generated from GST and analyzing data collected from a nationally representative sample of African American adults. Results from ordinary least squares regression analyses generally support the hypotheses. First, the effects of strain on deviant coping are fully mediated …
Occurrence Of Degenerative Joint Disease In The Radius: Analysis Of Skeletal Remains From The Poole-Rose Ossuary, Mirenda Ann Parks
Occurrence Of Degenerative Joint Disease In The Radius: Analysis Of Skeletal Remains From The Poole-Rose Ossuary, Mirenda Ann Parks
LSU Master's Theses
This study focuses on radii excavated from the Poole-Rose ossuary and analyzes the occurrence and patterning of degenerative joint disease (DJD) on the proximal and distal joint surfaces. The Poole-Rose ossuary, located in eastern Ontario, is dated to A.D. 1550 +/- 50. The Poole-Rose population, dating to the Late Woodland period, were agricultural in their subsistence activities. The disarticulated patterning of the skeletal remains suggests this site was associated with the “Feast of the Dead,” a mass interment burial ceremony. This ceremony took place about every eight to twelve years. Frequencies of lipping, porosity, and eburnation were reported in degree …
In Defense Of Malingering: A Cautionary Note, Dennis R. Dixon
In Defense Of Malingering: A Cautionary Note, Dennis R. Dixon
LSU Master's Theses
The simulation and exaggeration of job related injury symptoms is a significant problem in the Workers' Compensation system. The result of simulation and exaggeration is the inappropriate allotment of financial resources to workers whose actual injuries do not warrant such compensation. Psychology as a field has done much research in the past years to address the detection of malingering. Most of that focus has viewed malingering behavior as a personal choice, as well as being indicative of a character flaw. However, the degree to which external factors such as work conditions increase the likelihood of an individual malingering has received …
Sex Estimation Of Fetal And Infant Remains Based On Metric And Morphognostic Analyses, Jason Thomas Ridley
Sex Estimation Of Fetal And Infant Remains Based On Metric And Morphognostic Analyses, Jason Thomas Ridley
LSU Master's Theses
Sex determination of adult remains has become a well-established practice in forensic anthropology. However, the assessment of sex in fetal remains is a highly contested subject. The purpose of this research is to ascertain whether fetal and early infant specimens can be sexed accurately using five bones of the cranium and the mandible. The first part of this research project is based on the work of Fazekas and Kosa (1978), in which they test to see if statistical significance can be found between the cranial base bones of fetal male and female specimens. The second part is based on the …
Dirty Secrets: Blood Protein And Vfa Analysis Of Soil From Execution And Grave Site In The Former Yugoslavia, Hugh Tuller
Dirty Secrets: Blood Protein And Vfa Analysis Of Soil From Execution And Grave Site In The Former Yugoslavia, Hugh Tuller
LSU Master's Theses
Blood proteins and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) deposited in crime scene soil may remain biologically active and detectable after a considerable lapse of time. Soils were sampled from three sites of known criminal activity in the former Yugoslavia. From an execution site near Stutica, Kosovo, soil samples were analyzed for year-and-a-half-old blood proteins using an immunological test, cross-over immunoelectrophoresis. From a total of 72 samples, 44 returned positive results for human blood proteins. Soil solution from grave soils sampled at a cemetery in Duz, Kosovo, and a mass grave in Knin, Croatia were analyzed for VFAs using gas chromatography (GC) …
Hispanics And Violent Crime In The United States: Examining The Effect Of Segregation, Dorothy Mecom
Hispanics And Violent Crime In The United States: Examining The Effect Of Segregation, Dorothy Mecom
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study focuses on Hispanics and violent crime. Previous studies (Krivo and Peterson, 1993, Shihadeh and Flynn, 1996) analyze crime rates among blacks; however, the research on Hispanics is very limited (Massey and Denton, 1992). The majority of sociological studies analyze racial residential segregation in order to explain higher rates of violent crime among blacks. (Peterson and Krivo, 1993; Frey and Farley, 1996.) Most researchers employ the Index of Dissimilarity (D), which measures evenness (distribution of the population), in order to measure segregation. (Fischer and Massey, 2000). In this study, I plan to fill the gap in …
Transverse (Harris) Lines In The Tibiae Of A Prehistoric Costa Rican Population, Kelly E. Gillis
Transverse (Harris) Lines In The Tibiae Of A Prehistoric Costa Rican Population, Kelly E. Gillis
LSU Master's Theses
Transverse (Harris) lines are lines of opacity that extend across the medullary cavity in long bones; they are sometimes are also found in irregular bones. Predominantly, Harris lines are seen in radiographs of the tibiae. Many scholars believe that these lines of opacity are caused by nutritional interruptions during growth, while others believe these lines to be indicators of stress recovery, rather than interruption. This study examines the incidence of transverse lines in a Pre-Columbian Costa Rican population, called Vidor, located on the northwest Bay of Culebra. The burials of this population, originally excavated in 1977, contained more than 40 …
Mexican Women And Migration: The Effects Of Education And Family Status, Veronica Cuartas Aravena
Mexican Women And Migration: The Effects Of Education And Family Status, Veronica Cuartas Aravena
LSU Master's Theses
Much existing research on migration of Mexican women has focused on those who migrate to the United States. However, most Mexican female migrants move within the country. This study asks two interrelated questions: (1) Does education, marital status, and the number of children influence Mexican women's migration status and (2) are there any differences in the way these factors affect internal versus international migration. Data from the Mexican Migration Project (2001) collected during the winter months of 1987-1997 (N=7610) are employed and three models are constructed, where non-migrants serve as the reference category. These models are also used to examine …
The Effects Of Oryzanol On Bone Mineral Density In Ovariectomized, Retired Breeder Rats, Heather Compton Colona
The Effects Of Oryzanol On Bone Mineral Density In Ovariectomized, Retired Breeder Rats, Heather Compton Colona
LSU Master's Theses
The accelerated rate of bone loss that occurs after menopause may be reduced by consuming rice bran oil (RBO), which contains natural oryzanol. Three different forms of oryzanol (natural oryzanol, NO; crystalline oryzanol, CO; and solubilized oryzanol, SO) were evaluated in a rat model of postmenopausal women. Retired Sprague-Dawley breeder rats were stratified by weight and assigned randomly to one of five groups for a thirteen week study. Rats were either variectomized (O, n=37) or sham-operated (ShC, n=10) and assigned to control (C) diets (OC, n=10 or ShC, n=10) or one of three forms of oryzanol (NO, n=9; CO, n=9; …
Useful Field Of View Of An Indicator Of Accident Risk: Results From A College Sample, Jeffrey James Schneider
Useful Field Of View Of An Indicator Of Accident Risk: Results From A College Sample, Jeffrey James Schneider
LSU Master's Theses
Driving is an important part of daily life in our society. Neurocognitive deficits acquired from a head injury can affect driving ability. Determining when it is safe for a person recovering from a head injury to return to the road can often be difficult. With the risk involved in an on-the-road driving evaluation, effective measures are needed to determine when patients are ready to be evaluated. Some neuropsychological measures have shown promise in this area. The Useful Field of View (UFOV) is one test that has been used successfully with older drivers to predict accident risk. Research has also been …

The Relationship Between Classroom Motivation And Academic Achievement In First And Third Graders, Sheri Coates Broussard
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between classroom motivation and academic achievement in first and third graders. The subjects included 122 first grade children and 129 third grade children from a mid-sized, southern city. The total sample was comprised of 251 children, 59% non-white and 57% female. The findings from the current study were consistent with the literature reviewed in that higher levels of mastery motivation and judgment motivation were found to be related to higher grades in third graders. It is important to note, however, that only higher levels of mastery motivation, not judgment motivation, …

Your Money Or Your Speech: The Children's Internet Protection Act And The Congressional Assault On The First Amendment In Public Libraries, Steven D. Hinckley
Journal Articles
This article examines the inherent conflict between This article examines the inherent conflict between two Congressional approaches to public access to the Internet - the provision of federal funding support to schools and public libraries to ensure broad access to online information regardless of financial means, and federal restrictions on children's use of school and public library computers to access content that the government feels could be harmful to them. It analyzes the efficacy and constitutionality of the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), Congress's attempt to use its powers of the purse to control objectionable online content in the very …

LSU Master's Theses
Analysis of death trends in a geographic area can provide valuable information regarding the health of the people in that area. Additionally, evaluation of variables such as sex, race, age, and cause of death can aid local health officials in serving the needs of the population. East Baton Rouge Parish is located in southern Louisiana, includes the capital city of Baton Rouge, and has a population of 412,852. An analysis of death cases handled by the Coroner's Office in East Baton Rouge Parish has not been performed until now. This thesis presents results from an analysis of all deaths in …

Towards Nonmonotonic Reasoning On Hierarchical Knowledge, Pascal Hitzler
Towards Nonmonotonic Reasoning On Hierarchical Knowledge, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
W.C. Rounds and G.Q. Zhang have recently proposed to study a form of disjunctive logic programming generalized to algebraic domains [RZ01]. This system allows reasoning with information which is hierarchically structured and forms a (suitable) domain. We extend this framework to include reasoning with negative information, i.e. the implicit or explicit absence of bits of information. These investigations will naturally lead to a form of default reasoning which is strongly related to programming with answer sets to stable models, which has recently created much interest amongst artificial intelligence researchers concerned with knowledge representation and reasoning.

[Review Of] Jane M. Gaines, Fire And Desire: Mixed-Race Movies In The Silent Era, George H. Junne Jr
[Review Of] Jane M. Gaines, Fire And Desire: Mixed-Race Movies In The Silent Era, George H. Junne Jr
Ethnic Studies Review
Jane M.Gaines has written an important book on the topic of race movies and race relations in early American cinema. Using eclectic analyses that range from W.E.B. DuBois' insights on "double consciousness," to queer theory, Gaines is able to critically examine issues of mixed race people and race mixing in silent films. She wonderfully reworks some theories until they yield beneficial interpretations. For example, Gaines argues against the blanket use of psychoanalysis as a tool to comprehend African American Experience, including cinema, because, she says, "Historically psychoanalysis had no cognizance of black people nor was any attempt made to understand …

[Review Of] Nina Glick Schiller And Georges Eugene Fouron. Georges Woke Up Laughing: Long Distance Nationalism And The Search For Home, Jana Evans Braziel
Ethnic Studies Review
In Georges Woke Up Laughing: Long-Distance Nationalism and the Search for Home, Nina Glick Schiller and Georges Eugene Fouron theorize new ways of thinking about nationality and citizenship within a global context, focusing on Haiti and its diaspora. The authors discuss recent debates about transnationalism and the changing notions of citizenship across national boundaries and further research on the subject by Michel Laguerre, Rainer Bauböck, Aihwa Ong, Glick Schiller, Linda Basch, and Cristina Szanton Blanc. It is evident that the nature of their work necessitates a subjective methodology, and this becomes part of the book's analyses. Combining autobiography with ethnographic …

Predicting Oral Reading Miscues, Jack Mostow, Joseph Beck, S. Vanessa Winter, Shaojun Wang
Kno.e.sis Publications
This paper explores the problem of predicting specific reading mistakes, called miscues, on a given word. Characterizing likely miscues tells an automated reading tutor what to anticipate, detect, and remediate. As training and test data, we use a database of over 100,000 miscues transcribed by University of Colorado researchers. We explore approaches that exploit different sources of predictive power: the uneven distribution of words in text, and the fact that most miscues are real words. We compare the approaches’ ability to predict miscues of other readers on other text. A simple rote method does best on the most frequent 100 …
