Room Of Confession: An Investigation Into The Challenges And Possible Applications Of Primary Narrative For Use In Middle School Peer Harassment Intervention, Dorothy D. Foote Jan 2002

Room Of Confession: An Investigation Into The Challenges And Possible Applications Of Primary Narrative For Use In Middle School Peer Harassment Intervention, Dorothy D. Foote

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Peer harassment is an omnipresent reality in our schools today. The literature reviewed for this paper examines harassment and victimization on several levels (e.g., individual behaviors of target and perpetrator, various forms of victimization, group processes, family dynamics, and structural characteristics of larger units such as the classroom and the school). The literature identifies a number of prevention and intervention strategies designed to address this issue in a school setting, with much of the emphasis on the classroom teacher or guidance department. One strategy not found in the current literature is storytelling in the form of primary narrative. This thesis …

Talking About Sexuality: Parent's Communication And Its Influence On Their Children's Attitudes And Behaviors, Eilean G. Moskey Jan 2002

Talking About Sexuality: Parent's Communication And Its Influence On Their Children's Attitudes And Behaviors, Eilean G. Moskey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is in fact any relationship between the amount of interaction and influence parents have with their children, and their children's later sexual behavior and attitudes. This study analyzed data collected from students enrolled in a human sexuality class from 1990 to 2002. Results of the study show that clearly parents and children are not talking about sex very frequently. In all the years studied, the majority of the students said that they never asked their mother or father a question about sex. While few significant differences in sexuality attitudes and …

Architecture Of The Popham Colony, 1607-1608: An Archaeological Portrait Of English Building Practice At The Moment Of Settlement, Peter H. Morrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From August 1607 to summer or fall 1608, the Popham Colony was established on what is now known as Hossketch Point, in Popham Beach, Maine. Rediscovered in 1994, the archaeological remains of the colony are providing insights into one of England's earliest colonial efforts in North America. Among the most exciting hds, are features relating to early seventeenth-century English building practices. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of the colony's six meter wide by twenty meter long storehouse, the "Admiral's howse," one of two apparently connected buildings, the buttery general or the Corporal's house; and what has tentatively been identified as the …

Satisfaction And Skills We Gain As Archivists Are Not Ours To Keep, Susan G. Broome Jan 2002

Satisfaction And Skills We Gain As Archivists Are Not Ours To Keep, Susan G. Broome

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

A year ago Provenance was in triage, and the executive board of the Society of Georgia Archivists (SGA) had health care power of attorney. A robust journal, fed by the careful attention of outgoing editor Sheryl Vogt, her staff, and the editorial board, was floundering. Transfusions from other leaders were in order, but an extended search for a new attending physician had not been successful. A sense of despair and resignation was felt by many who had invested their lifeblood in the publication. There was talk of letting it die with dignity, but there was a critical need to evaluate …

The journal of a professional association is an integral part of the public and educational mission of an organization. By its quality and relevance to current issues, a journal essentially confirms the group's professional stature and purpose. By publishing articles on new initiatives, noteworthy projects, legal and social issues, and emerging trends affecting archives, the journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists (SGA) contributes to the continuing education of its members, the development of new archivists, and the historical record of issues and research affecting the profession. Provenance is the major published record of the society and its service to …

Ethological Causes And Consequences Of The Stress Response, Neil Greenberg, James A. Carr, Cliff H. Summers Jan 2002

Ethological Causes And Consequences Of The Stress Response, Neil Greenberg, James A. Carr, Cliff H. Summers

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Stress involves real or perceived changes within an organism or in the environment that activate an organism’s attempts to cope by means of evolutionarily ancient neural and endocrine mechanisms. Responses to acute stressors involve catecholamines released in varying proportion at different sites in the sympathetic and central nervous systems. These responses may interact with and be complemented by intrinsic rhythms and responses to chronic or intermittent stressors involving the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Varying patterns of responses to stressors are also affected by an animal=s assessment of their prospects for successful coping. Subsequent central and systemic consequences of the stress response include …

Ethological Aspects Of Stress In A Model Lizard, Anolis Carolinensis, Neil Greenberg Jan 2002

Ethological Aspects Of Stress In A Model Lizard, Anolis Carolinensis, Neil Greenberg

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Research on the stress response in reptiles can provide a useful comparative perspective for understanding how the constituent elements of the response can be put into service of diverse behavioral adaptations. A summary of the neural and endocrine causes and consequences of specific behavioral patterns seen in the small diurnal lizard, Anolis carolinensis, has provided a model for the exploration of the dynamics of autonomic and neurohormonal contributions to adaptive behavior.

In this species, changes in body color provide indices of the flux of circulating stress relevant hormones, and are seen in situations from spontaneous exploration through agonistic behavior. Furthermore, …

Experiential Learning In Webcasting For Peace Through Tourism, Courtlandt Butts Jan 2002

Experiential Learning In Webcasting For Peace Through Tourism, Courtlandt Butts

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to report on a project to develop cultural awareness and knowledge of the tourism profession; and to bring the team of students to Amman, Jordan to facilitate the first ever-global webcast of a conference. Within the international experience itself, the major components of the overall project involved grant writing, technological hands-on training, international student presentations, and the production of a professional videotape. The possibility of gaining such access had been made possible through the Undergraduate Research/ Experiential Learning Grant (UREL Grant) offered by the College of Education at UNI, which provided the ideal avenue …

Contract Law, Andrew Phang Jan 2002

Contract Law, Andrew Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As expected, the number of Singapore cases during the year under review impacting the law of contract is enormous. As I have mentioned in previous reviews, this is due to the fact that the law of contract permeates virtually all areas of the law of obligations – and, on occasion, beyond as well. I will therefore adopt the approach which has been adopted during previous years: which is to focus, in the main, on general principles. There have – as we shall see – been a few cases that are of especial significance. Not surprisingly, given the fact that the …
