Bringing The Library To The Students: Using Technology To Deliver Instruction And Resources For Research, Judith Arnold, Jennifer N. Sias, Jingping Zhang
Librarian Research
To provide equitable services and access to off-campus students, librarians must meet the challenges of the digital divide and the geographic divide. Instruction and document delivery are key services that can determine how successful a library is in meeting its responsibility to distance learning. This session will focus on technological solutions to instruction, access, and document delivery in technology-challenged and remote environments.
Research Proposal: Is Corporal Punishment As Effective As Positive Reinforcement?, Aaron Deakin
Research Proposal: Is Corporal Punishment As Effective As Positive Reinforcement?, Aaron Deakin
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
Research today has revealed various methods for behavior change and behavior change strategies. A question that leaves many researchers turning their heads is, what is the most effective and efficient way to change aggressive delinquent and violent behaviors. Is punishment as effective as positive reinforcement? This is interesting because in an image concerned society, people may be more apt to model behaviors that are rewarded positively rather than to behave appropriately from being punished. My hypothesis is that positive reinforcement will be more effective than corporal punishment. “Most family and pediatricians favor the use of corporal punishment and pediatricians agree …

Research Proposal: Cultural Differences In Dating, Relinda Pearson
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
Dating constitutes an important activity in two developmental stages: adolescence and young adulthood (Sheming & Jiping, 2000). Dating is seen as recreation or an opportunity to have fun, as a means of status grading, as an opportunity for companionship with members of the opposite sex, and also as a way of sorting and preference. Lindenwood University has a very diverse student body. Many students that attend Lindenwood University are from many different places on the globe. The student body of Lindenwood University assumes that they are one in the same, but that assumption ranges in many aspects. Dating is one …

The Future Of U.S. Capitalism, Frederic L. Pryor
Economics Faculty Works
This multidisciplinary book looks at the long-term forces that are shaping the most important economic institutions in the United States in the coming decades. These underlying causes of change include not just economic, but also social, cultural, and political forces. The writing style is lively and clear, with a series of appendices focusing on technical issues of interest to specialists, so that the author's reasoning and the results are readily understandable to a wide audience. He foresees a declining rate of growth, a widening of the inequalities of income, and a growing share of individual markets taken by a small …

Put-Call Parity And The Law, Michael S. Knoll
Put-Call Parity And The Law, Michael S. Knoll
All Faculty Scholarship
A common literary theme is the conflict between appearance and reality. That conflict also frequently arises in the law, where it is usually cast as one between substance and form. Another discipline in which the conflict arises is finance, where it appears in the put-call parity theorem. That theorem states that given any three of the four following financial instruments--a riskless zero-coupon bond, a share of stock, a call option on the stock, and a put option on the stock--the fourth instrument can be replicated. Thus, the theorem implies that any financial position containing these assets can be constructed in …

Narratives Of Workers On The Crisis Line: Dialogic Conversations About Domestic Violence, Elizabeth A. Curry
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
This paper is my exploratory study of the interpersonal communication between domestic violence workers who answer crisis calls and the callers who seek help. I am focusing on the perception of those who answer the crisis lines. This is part of my on-going research into the meaning and experiences of the women who work against domestic violence. There are approximately 1,900 local domestic violence programs and state coalitions in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This paper is based on the experiences of women working in one local program, CASA. I will briefly compare the CASA advocates …

Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry, Elizabeth A. Curry, Deborah Cunningham Walker
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
“Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry” seeks to define a collegial relationship through the experiences of two first year doctoral students at a large state-supported university. The techniques used to develop the co-constructed narrative parallel the authors’ development of a collaborative relationship. Using autoethnographic essays and interactive interviews, the authors co-construct several narratives that describe the process of moving from a friendly, social relationship to a scholarly, collaborative relationship, as well as the process of moving from peer reviewers to co-authors. An introductory narrative frames the paper; each of the “interior” narratives is accompanied by an extensive analytic introduction and …

Bedrock Geology Of West Fork Quadrangle, Washington County, Arkansas, Jack T. King, Maria E. King, Stephen K. Boss
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A digital geologic map of West Fork quadrangle was produced at 1:24,000 scale using the geographic information system (GIS) software Maplnfo. Data regarding stratigraphic relations observed in the field were digitized onto the United States Geological Survey (USGS) digital raster graphic (DRG) of West Fork quadrangle. The geology of West Fork quadrangle consists of sedimentary rocks of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian systems. The Fayetteville Shale and Pitkin Formation represent the Mississippian system. The Hale, Bloyd, and Atoka Formations represent the Pennsylvanian System. Each of these formations consists of members that were mapped at 1:24,000 scale, and this mapping effort represents …

Slavery, Economics And Constitutional Ideals, Edward L. Ayers

As we think about endings, however, it is also useful to think about beginnings. That is what President Abraham Lincoln did in his Second Inaugural Address, delivered just five weeks before the surrender at Appomattox and his own assassination soon thereafter. All knew, he said reflecting sadly and thoughtfully on how the Civil War came about, that slavery was, "somehow," the cause. In fact, "somehow," however, lay puzzles, contradictions, and questions. The connections between slavery and the Civil War have concerned Americans ever since the events at Appomattox.

The Nazis' Archeology, Megan Young
The Nazis' Archeology, Megan Young
Nebraska Anthropologist
The Nazi Party found that archeology is a very useful tool in propaganda. The Nazis used it to justify their nationalistic interests, from the conquest of Europe to create the Third Reich to genocidal racial cleansing. They glorified their past to unite the German people and gain their support. However, the people could not have been misled without the cooperation or apathy of German archeologists in general.
I'Ll Take My Land: Contemporary Southern Agrarians, Suzanne W. Jones
I'Ll Take My Land: Contemporary Southern Agrarians, Suzanne W. Jones
English Faculty Publications
For many earlier southern white writers, the southern rural landscape was the repository of nostalgia for lost ways of life, whether it was the plantation fantasy that Thomas Nelson Page pined for in his stories In Ole Virginia (1887) or the segregated agrarian ideal that many contributors yearned for in I'll Take My Stand (1930). For modern southern white writers, beginning most prominently with William Faulkner, the rural landscape has conjured up unsettling guile about a way of life that flourished on the backs of the black people who tilled that land. And not surprisingly, for many black writers the …
Book Review: The Mormon Question: Polygamy And Constitutional Conflict In Nineteenth-Century America, Terryl Givens
Book Review: The Mormon Question: Polygamy And Constitutional Conflict In Nineteenth-Century America, Terryl Givens

Polygamy makes for fascinating social history and for best-selling potboilers as well. This study by Sarah Barringer Gordon, who teaches both law and history at the University of Pennsylvania, is the first attempt to write a full-length legal history of “the Principle.” It turns out that even in this dry-as-dust genre, polygamy fuels a very dynamic story indeed, one that reveals the rich malleability of the Constitution, the endless resourcefulness of determined guardians of public morality, and the resilience of a peculiar people committed to the practice of plural marriage.
