Maine Center on Aging Service and Consultation

Caregiving does not cause depression, but some may experience it, as many sacrifice their own physical and emotional needs in order to provide care to others. Symptoms of depression may include a change in eating habits, sleep patterns, feelings of constant exhaustion, loss of interest in things that once brought you pleasure, thoughts of suicide, among others. If any of these symptoms persist for more than two weeks, it is important to recognize and get help with these issues. Depression is a highly curable illness with appropriate medical care.

Social Work Faculty Publications

Objective: Few studies have assessed the outcomes of runaway/homeless youth that seek assistance from shelter or crisis services, which would provide much needed documentation of intervention effectiveness and point to new directions for service provision. The goals of the current study were to: (1) assess short-term outcomes among runaway/homeless youth using emergency shelters and crisis services and (2) compare short-term outcomes achieved by runaway/homeless youth in crisis shelters with similar youth using other, longer-term treatment modalities. Method: The study sampled 261 youth using runaway/homeless shelters from four midwestern states at intake and six-weeks postdischarge and 47 high-risk youth using longer-term …

Revisiting The Picture-Superiority Effect In Symbolic Comparisons: Do Pictures Provide Privileged Access?, Paul Amrhein, Mark Mcdaniel, Paula Waddill Sep 2002

Revisiting The Picture-Superiority Effect In Symbolic Comparisons: Do Pictures Provide Privileged Access?, Paul Amrhein, Mark Mcdaniel, Paula Waddill

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In 4 experiments, symbolic comparisons were investigated to test semantic-memory retrieval accounts espousing processing advantages for the picture over word stimuli. In Experiment 1, participants judged pairs of animal names or pictures by responding to questions probing concrete or abstract attributes (texture or size, ferocity or intelligence). Per pair, attributes were salient or nonsalient concerning their prerated relevance to animals being compared. Distance (near or far) between attribute magnitudes was also varied. Pictures did not significantly speed responding relative to words across all other variables. Advantages were found for far attribute magnitudes (i.e., the distance effect) and salient attributes. The …

From Henry Street To Contracted Services: Financing The Settlement House, Robert Fisher, Michael Fabricant Sep 2002

From Henry Street To Contracted Services: Financing The Settlement House, Robert Fisher, Michael Fabricant

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article tracks historically the direct connection and shifting relationship between the larger political economy, the extent and arrangement of financing, and agency programming in the settlement house from 1886 to the present, with particular attention to agency experience in New York City. During this time the settlements changed from being informal organizations oriented to service provision and community building, in which funding was a highly private matter, to formalized, multiservice agencies dependent on contracted public funds for categorical programs. This transformation resulted not as a linear progression of organizational development but rather as an historical process tied to shifting …

Domestic Violence Law Reforms: Reactions From The Trenches, Carol Bohmer, Jennifer Brandt, Denise Bronson, Helen Hartnett

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In recent years, feminists have worked hard to pressure society and the criminal justice system into taking domestic violence seriously. These efforts have resulted in more government funding and increased services to victims. In addition, there have also been legal and policy reforms which have affected the way cases are handled in the criminal justice system. This article reports on research on the reactions to those reforms by those most directly affected by them, the victims themselves and those who provide services to them.

Journal of Transportation Management

This article describes the development and growth of various modes of transportation in the United States and recent trends in the length, size and value of domestic shipments. Finally, this paper looks at emerging forms of supply chain integration and operation.

Developing The Buyer-Friendly Transportation Salesperson: An Empirical Analysis Of The Most Important Seller Traits And Behaviors From The Transportation Buyer’S Perspective, Charles E. Pettijohn, R Stephen Parker, John L. Kent

Journal of Transportation Management

The research reported in this manuscript provides several insights regarding the specific behaviors and traits of transportation salespersons as sought by a sample of shippers. Shippers in both manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries were asked to evaluate the importance of 30 potential salesperson characteristics. Overall, dependability, ethical conduct, honesty, provision of regular service, and solution selling were ranked as the most important (“must have”) characteristics. In addition to the overall rankings, t-tests were used to compare the manufacturing and non-manufacturing groups and ANOVA tests were used to compare the responses of shippers which were grouped by number of contacts from salespersons.

Examining Sources Of Driver Turnover From A Managerial Perspective, Hokey Min Sep 2002

Examining Sources Of Driver Turnover From A Managerial Perspective, Hokey Min

Journal of Transportation Management

There is growing concern about the declining profitability of the U. S. trucking industry. Such concerns often stem from the increased difficulty of recruiting and retaining qualified drivers. In fact, the trucking industry has been hit hard by shortages of qualified truck drivers over the last two decades. To cope with this chronic problem, trucking firms have attempted to formulate various driver recruitment and retention strategies that include pay raises, bonuses, equipment improvement, and adjustments in working hours. This article provides trucking firms with the means to implement a more effective driver recruitment and retention strategy by examining sources of …

Liberalization Of International Air Transportation Markets: The Effect Of Terrorism On Market Trends, Dawna L. Rhoades Sep 2002

Liberalization Of International Air Transportation Markets: The Effect Of Terrorism On Market Trends, Dawna L. Rhoades

Journal of Transportation Management

Since the United States deregulated its airline industry with the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, the international air transport industry has been on a path toward market liberalization. Market changes have included entry, capacity, and pricing freedom as well as increased levels of foreign ownership. The recent terrorist acts of September 11, 2001 have the potential to alter, if not reverse this course. This paper examines the forces fueling the trend toward liberalization and analyzes the impact of recent events on the future prospects of open aviation markets.

Newspaper Management In Nigerian University Libraries: A Case Of Federal University Of Technology Owerri(Futo) Library, Chinwe Veronica Anunobi Dr, Carol N. Okorafor

Chinwe Veronica Anunobi Dr

The work discusses the management of newspapers in Nigerian university libraries with reference to the Library of the Federal University of Technology Owerri. It notes that newspapers are acquired by subscription through a well-established vendor or directly from the publishers. Political, economic, social and intellectual problems hinder the continuous subscription of newspapers. The processing of newspaper involves stamping and recording using standard forms and registers or loose sheets. Such processing requires adequate work surface. Newspapers are made available for use on display racks or newspaper folders while articles are located using in-housed developed indexes. The preservation of newspapers poses some …
