We examine why employers use temporary agency and contract company workers and the implications of these practices for the wages, benefits, and working conditions of workers in low-skilled labor markets. Through intensive case studies in manufacturing (automotive supply), services (hospitals), and public sector (primary and secondary schools) industries, we define the circumstances under which these workers are likely to be adversely affected, minimally affected, or even benefited by such outsourcing. Employment

Self-employment provides a variety of advantages including flexible hours, ability to work from home, an outlet for creativity, and a job that capitalizes on one’s interests and talents (Clark & Kays, 1999). According to the 1990 United States Census, people with disabilities choose self-employment at a higher rate than people without disabilities (12.2% vs. 7.8%). The 1998 Reauthorization of the Rehabilitation Act contains language that strengthens self-employment as a viable and expected Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) outcome. Pedagogically, databases of primary source data provide students with a learning experience based on the inquiry learning model however, observations of students and teachers in the past 20 years have indicated that database searching is shallow and investigation perfunctory. Before, we could have blamed unwieldy search engines. The online version of the First Fleet Database has removed this obstacle, but students’ research skills still appear to be limited. Other pedagogical strategies have been added to that of the database strategy, for example a discussion forum to enable learners to publish and debate their opinions on history. In previous newsletters we have been somewhat general in arguing how sociology can offer distinct perspectives and possible solutions to architectural design problems. In this article we instead give a specific hypothetical problem that might well confront the architect. In doing so we might be able to see what sociology can offer the architect in terms of possible insights and solutions, and we might also find that in analyzing one problem we may well find connections to still larger problems.

Increases in anxiety levels during the late-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle form important diagnostic criteria of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) (1). Evidence exists to support the hypothesis that tolerance to endogenous levels of melatonin might occur during the luteal phase in PMDD (2, 3). It was hypothesized that slow release (SR) melatonin administration during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle of participants with PMDD could significantly lower anxiety levels measured by self-report.

ค่าบีโอดีเป็นพารามิเตอร์ที่ใช้ในการบ่งบอกลักษณะและประสิทธิภาพของระบบบำบัดน้ำเสียในปัจจุบันอย่างแพร่หลาย อย่างไรก็ดีในการวิเคราะห์น้ำเสียที่มีสารอินทรีย์ ต่ำมักขาดความถูกต้องและแม่นยำ งานวิจัยนี้ได้ศึกษาผลของปัจจัยควบคุมที่มีต่อค่าบีดีโอซีซึ่งเป็นพารามิเตอร์ใหม่ ในน้ำเสียจากระบบตะกอนเร่ง และวิเคราะห์พารามิเตอร์ อื่นๆ ได้แก่ค่าบีโอดี ค่าซีโอดี ค่าดีโอซี และมวลชีวภาพ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิภาพและความแม่นยำในการวัดค่า บีดีโอซีอีกด้วย จากผลการศึกษาในแบบจำลองพบว่า ค่าบีดีโอซีที่ได้จากระบบบำบัดที่มีเวลากักตะกอนต่ำมีค่าสูงกว่าที่พบในน้ำที่บำบัดที่มีเวลากักตะกอนสูง นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า ประสิทธิภาพในการบำบัดโดยวิเคราะห์จากค่าบีดีโอซีมีความสัมพันธ์กับเวลากักตะกอนอย่างเห็นได้ชัดซึ่งอาจสามารถใช้ความสัมพันธ์ดังกล่าวมาทำนายและใช้ในการ ออกแบบระบบตะกอนเร่งได้ในอนาคตและเป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่าค่าบีดีโอซีมีความสัมพันธ์กับค่าบีโอดี และดีโอซี อย่างไรก็ตาม ควรเพิ่มจำนวนของข้อมูลในการวิเคราะห์เพื่อให้ได้ผลชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น จากผลการศึกษาของ ทุกระบบพบว่าค่าบีดีโอซีมีความแม่นยำในการวิเคราะห์เหนือกว่าค่าบีโอดีอย่าง มีนัยสำคัญ

การศึกษาดัชนีเพื่อการประเมินคุณค่าแหล่งธรรมชาติประเภท บึง หนองและทะเลสาบ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อให้ท้องถิ่นได้ตระหนักถึงคุณค่าของแหล่งธรรมชาติที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ การศึกษาครั้งนี้ใช้บึงบอระเพ็ด จังหวัดนครสวรรค์เป็นกรณีศึกษา ดัชนี/ ตัวชี้วัดที่สร้างประกอบด้วยด้านคุณค่ามี 16 ตัววัด ด้านศักยภาพมี 4 ตัววัดและด้านความเสียงมี 3 ตัววัด จากนั้นจัดอันดับความสำคัญของตัวชี้วัดแล้วสร้างเกณฑ์การให้คะแนนตัววัด ในขั้นสุดท้ายนำมาหาค่าความเหมาะสม ซึ่งมี 3 ระดับ ดังนี้
- ค่าความเหมาะสมต่ำ คะแนนอยู่ระหว่าง 1.0-2.4
- ค่าความเหมาะสมปานกลาง คะแนนอยู่ระหว่าง 2.5-3.4
- ค่าความเหมาะสมสูง คะแนนอยู่ระหว่าง 3.5-5.0
ผลการศึกษา คุณค่าของบึงบอระเพ็ดมีค่าความเหมาะสม 3.72 ส่วนศักยภาพในการบริหารจัดการบึงมีค่าความเหมาะสม 3.04 และความเสียงที่อาจเกิดขึ้นมีค่าความเหมาะสม 2.84 จึงสรุปได้ว่า บึงบอระเพ็ดเป็นบึงที่มีคุณค่าสูงโดยเฉพาะด้านความหลากหลายของทรัพยากรชีวภาพ ส่วนศักยภาพในการบริหารจัดการและความเสี่ยงอยู่ในระดับปานกลาง

การกำจัดตะกั่วจากน้ำเสียสังเคราะห์ด้วยกระบวนการดูดติดผิว โดยใช้ถ่านกัมมันต์ผลิตจากเปลือกผลไม้, ธเรศ ศรีสถิตย์, ลลิดา นิทัศนจารุกุล

การวิจัยนี้เพื่อศึกษาความสามารถในการดูดติดผิวตะกั่วในน้ำเสียสังเคราะห์โดยใช้ถ่านกัมมันต์ จากเปลือกทุเรียนและเปลือกเม็ดมะม่วงหิมพานต์ที่ผ่านกระบวนการกระตุ้นทางเคมีโดยใช้เกลือแกง (NaCI) การทดลองแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ส่วน ขั้นแรกเป็นการเตรียมถ่านกัมมันต์ ศึกษาลักษณะทางกายภาพ และประสิทธิภาพของถ่านกัมมันต์ การทดลองพบว่า อุณหภูมิที่เหมาะสมที่ใช้ในการเผาวัตถุดิบให้เป็นถ่านพร้อมกับการกระตุ้นคือ 800 องศาเซลเซียส และผลของตัวกระตุ้นพบว่า การแช่วัตถุดิบด้วยสารละลายเกลือแกงอิ่มตัวเป็นเวลา 24 ชั่วโมง นำไปอบแห้ง แล้วนำมาทำการเผาและกระตุ้นก็เพียงพอ ที่จะทำให้ได้ถ่านกัมมันต์ที่มีประสิทธิภาพสูง โดยถ่านเปลือกทุเรียนและถ่านเปลือกเม็ดมะม่วงหิมพานต์จะมีค่าไอโอดีน นัมเบอร์สูงที่สุดเท่ากับ 567 และ 532 มิลลิกรัมของไอโอดีนต่อกรัมของถ่านกัมมันต์ตามลำดับ
ขั้นตอนที่สองคือการทำการทดลองแบบไม่ต่อเนื่องเพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยต่างๆ ที่มีผลต่อการดูดติดผิวตะกั่ว จากการศึกษาพบว่า การดูดติดผิวตะกั่วจะเพิ่มขึ้นเมื่อพีเอชของน้ำเสียเพิ่มขึ้น และที่พีเอชของน้ำเสียเริ่มต้นตั้งแต่ 4 ขึ้นไป พบว่า ประสิทธิภาพในการกำจัดตะกั่วออกจากน้ำเสียสูงกว่า 90% ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากเกิดการดูดติดผิวบนถ่านกัมมันต์ร่วมกับการตกตะกอนของตะกั่ว ผลของเวลาสัมผัสพบว่า สมดุลของการดูดติดผิวสำหรับถ่านทั้งสองชนิดคือ 10 นาที ผลของการ หาไอโซเทอมการดูดติดผิวแบบฟรุนดิช แสดงให้เห็นว่าถ่านเปลือกทุเรียนมีความสามารถในการดูดติดผิวสูงกว่าถ่านเปลือกเม็ดมะม่วงหิมพานต์
ขั้นตอนสุดท้ายคือการทดลองแบบต่อเนื่องโดยใช้ถังดูดติดผิวแบบแท่งเพื่อศึกษาประสิทธิภาพการใช้งานของถ่าน การทดลองแบบต่อเนื่องได้เลือกใช้ถ่านเปลือกทุเรียน เมื่อทำการป้อนน้ำเสียแบบไหลลงอย่างต่อเนื่อง และทำการเก็บน้ำเสียที่ผ่านการบำบัดทางปลายแท่ง จนกระทั้งถ่านหมดประสิทธิภาพในการดูดติดผิว พบว่า ถ่านเปลือกทุเรียนที่ขั้น ความสูง 30, 60, 90 และ 120 เซนติเมตรสามารถบำบัดนี้าเสียได้ 94.01, 58.85, 50.98 และ 47.06 BV ตามลำดับ

Two games are best-response equivalent if they have the same best-response correspondence. We provide a characterization of when two games are best-response equivalent. The characterizations exploit a dual relationship between payoff differences and beliefs. Some “potential game” arguments (cf. Monderer and Shapley, 1996, Games. Econ. Behav. 14, 124-143) rely only on the property that potential games are best-response equivalent to identical interest games. Our results show that a large class of games are best-response equivalent to identical interest games, but are not potential games. Thus we show how some existing potential game arguments can be extended.

Optimal Organizational Design In A Dichotomous-Choice Project Selection Model, Winston T. H. Koh

This paper studies collective decision making in the context of a project selection model. We derive the optimal decision architecture when marginal decision costs are present, and investigate the circumstances under which the hierarchy and polyarchy exist as optimal sequential architectures. Our analysis extends previous results on optimal committee decision-making to a sequential setting, and further demonstrates the fragility of the hierarchy and polyarchy as optimal architectures.

This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of Osama bin Laden, founder and leader of the al-Qaida terrorist network responsible for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States.

Bin Laden’s primary personality patterns were found to be Ambitious/exploitative and Dauntless/dissenting, with a secondary Distrusting/suspicious orientation, and subsidiary Dominant/controlling and Conscientious/dutiful features.

Ambitious individuals are bold, competitive, and self-assured; they easily assume leadership roles, expect others to recognize their special qualities, and often act as though entitled. A State’S Gendered Response To Political Instability: Gendering Labor Policy In Semi-Authoritarian El Salvador (1944-1972), Leslie C. Gates, Kati L. Griffith

Unlike much of the gender and welfare literature, this study examines why a regime that constrains pressure from below would adopt gendered social policies. The Salvadoran case (1944-1972) suggests that political instability rather than societal pressures may prompt semi-authoritarian regimes to adopt gendered labor reforms. We extend the motivations for adopting gendered labor reforms to include co-opting labor by examining gendered labor reforms in the context of El Salvador’s historically contingent labor strategy. This gendered analysis helps explain how a semi-authoritarian regime secured political stability and reveals the special appeal gendered labor reforms may have to semi-authoritarian regimes.
