Alcohol Expectancies And Drinking Behavior In Adults With Social Anxiety Disorder And Dysthymia, Lindsay S. Ham, Debra A. Hope, Cameron S. White, P. Clayton Rivers Apr 2002

Alcohol Expectancies And Drinking Behavior In Adults With Social Anxiety Disorder And Dysthymia, Lindsay S. Ham, Debra A. Hope, Cameron S. White, P. Clayton Rivers

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous research has found a positive relationship between social anxiety disorder and alcoholism, and that certain alcohol outcome expectancies are related to drinking behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among drinking behaviors and alcohol expectancies in treatment-seeking individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder or dysthymia, as well as normal controls. No significant differences were found across the 3 groups in alcohol consumption. As expected, socially anxious participants had higher social assertiveness expectancies than both participants with dysthymia and normal controls. Participants with social anxiety disorder had greater tension reduction and global positive change expectancies than …

Relationships Between A Quaternary Model Of Psychological Type Processes And Defense Mechanism Clusters, Kathryn Elizabeth Kelly Apr 2002

Relationships Between A Quaternary Model Of Psychological Type Processes And Defense Mechanism Clusters, Kathryn Elizabeth Kelly

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the relationships between two psychological type dimensions (Extraversion-Introversion and Thinking-Feeling) and defense mechanism preferences. Psychological Type Theory was used as a conceptual framework for the generation of hypotheses. Specific hypotheses between the two psychological type dimensions and defense mechanism preferences were tested. Further, Extraversion-Introversion and Thinking-Feeling were combined, resulting in the formation of a quaternary personality model consisting of four groups (Introverted Thinking, Introverted Feeling, Extraverted Thinking, and Extraverted Feeling). Hypotheses that certain quaternary groups would display specific relationships with defense mechanism preferences were tested. To test hypotheses, 223 university students were administered the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator …

Asp -Pricing: A Black -Scholes Option Pricing Formulation, Chaitanya Singh Apr 2002

Asp -Pricing: A Black -Scholes Option Pricing Formulation, Chaitanya Singh

Doctoral Dissertations

The Applications Service Provider (ASP) arrangement has engendered a revolution in the area of corporate information technology (IT) by transforming software from a packaged off-the-shelf product to an on-line virtual service.

The focus of this study is to establish a sound mathematical foundation for evaluating software rental agreements (embedding exit flexibility) by incorporating a real options framework (based upon the Black-Scholes approach) into the traditional capital budgeting technique. The static discounted cash flow or net present value analysis may not adequately serve as a ‘barometer’ of outsourcing value due to its inherent weaknesses. On the other hand, the options approach …

English Language Proficiency And The Earnings Of Mexican Immigrants, Jeremy Sanford '02 Apr 2002

English Language Proficiency And The Earnings Of Mexican Immigrants, Jeremy Sanford '02

Honors Projects

Since 1965, the US has seen increasingly large numbers of immigrants crossing its borders. Indeed, more immigrants are arriving now than at any point in the past; the 1990's saw a higher number of immigrants enter the US than any previous decade (INS 1999). A disturbing corollary to the recent explosion in immigration is the corresponding decline of immigrant earnings relative to the earnings of natives. A cursory glance at the literature strongly suggests the changing national origin of immigrants as the main cause of this relative earnings decline. As a prime example, Mexican immigrants now outnumber any other national …

What Happened To All The Affordable Housing?, Renee Barut Apr 2002

What Happened To All The Affordable Housing?, Renee Barut

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Housing patterns in the United States have changed over time. During the first part of the nation’s development, many inhabitants lived in small, close knit, rural communities. With the boom of the Industrial Revolution, many rural inhabitants flocked to the cities in hope of finding better jobs and opportunities. Cities also grew in large part due to the influx of immigrants from European and later Asian countries in search of a better life in the United States. During the later part of the twentieth century factors such as crime, overcrowding, and technology made it desirable and possible for many to …

Congress’S Goal Of The Protection Of Civil Rights Of Persons With Disabilities: Facing The Challenge Of A Narrowing Supreme Court, Amy M. (Amy Michelle) Kalman Apr 2002

Congress’S Goal Of The Protection Of Civil Rights Of Persons With Disabilities: Facing The Challenge Of A Narrowing Supreme Court, Amy M. (Amy Michelle) Kalman

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was enacted with lofty goals. One of them was to call to the attention of the American people that "disability Is part of the human experience; all citizens have an Interest in ensuring that the values that form the basis for the ADA pervade our national life." More than ten years later, it cannot be correctly argued that complete equality of treatment and opportunity has been achieved for persons with disabilities through the ADA. When Congress created the act, as was seen in other federal civil rights legislation. It listed its prime mandate …

Direct And Indirect Shadow Price And Cost Estimates Of Nitrogen Pollution Abatement, Saleem Shaik, Glenn A. Helmers, Michael R. Langemeier Apr 2002

Direct And Indirect Shadow Price And Cost Estimates Of Nitrogen Pollution Abatement, Saleem Shaik, Glenn A. Helmers, Michael R. Langemeier

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

The implication of treating environmental pollution as an undesirable output (weak disposability) as well as a normal input (strong disposability) on the direct and indirect shadow price and cost estimates of nitrogen pollution abatement is analyzed using Nebraska agriculture sector data. The shadow price of nitrogen pollution abatement treated as an undesirable output represents the reduced revenue from reducing nitrogen pollution. In contrast, the shadow price of nitrogen pollution abatement treated as an input reflects the increased cost of reducing nitrogen pollution. For the 1936-97 period, the estimated shadow price and cost of nitrogen pollution abatement for Nebraska ranges from …

General Motors And Toyota: Comparison Of American And Japanese Managerial Cultures, Seiko Yomogita Apr 2002

General Motors And Toyota: Comparison Of American And Japanese Managerial Cultures, Seiko Yomogita

Masters Theses

In the automobile industry, American culture and Japanese culture impact each other to support economic growth in both countries as one part of globalization. In American companies, religious factors, individualism, and American immigrant history manifest as characteristics of American management styles. In contrast, in Japanese companies, Asian community-based ideology, household concepts, and family kinship manifest as characteristics of Japanese management styles. These differences appear in the relationships between employees and employers, job security, quality control of products, responsibilities of line workers, loyalty of all employees to the company, impact of wearing uniforms, functions of unions, and minority managements.

Mexican-Descent Latinas’ Compliance With Cervical Cancer Screening Guidelines, Evelinn A. Borrayo, Awilda Reyes Apr 2002

Mexican-Descent Latinas’ Compliance With Cervical Cancer Screening Guidelines, Evelinn A. Borrayo, Awilda Reyes

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

High mortality from invasive cervical cancer among Mexican-descent Latinas living in the Great Plains could be substantially reduced if they would utilize screening procedures regularly. To understand possible influential factors on their screening behaviors, we investigated which variables differentiate women age 50 and older who are most compliant with cervical cancer screening guidelines from those who are less compliant. Of 184 women surveyed, 100 were compliant with a yearly Pap smear while 84 were not compliant. Discriminant function analysis revealed that, apart from the significance of sociodemographic factors and acculturation, women who were most compliant significantly received more health-care provider …

Building A National Vocational Education And Training System, Robin Ryan Apr 2002

Building A National Vocational Education And Training System, Robin Ryan

Shannon Research Press

This study seeks to establish that policy in vocational education has oscillated between two poles. At one, vocational education is seen largely as an adjunct to economic development and the primary concern of the sector is to meet the needs of industry rather than of students. At the other, vocational education is seen as primarily student centred, encompassing goals of individual self-development and the creation of a more equitable society. In practice both these perspectives are present at any time, and both may be almost equally emphasised in VET policy and rhetoric.
