Democracy, Institutions And Attitudes About Citizen Influence On Government, Todd Donovan, Shaun Bowler
Democracy, Institutions And Attitudes About Citizen Influence On Government, Todd Donovan, Shaun Bowler
Political Science Faculty Publications
Theorists such as Carole Pateman and Benjamin Barber suggest that democratic participation will engage citizens and lead them to have more positive regard for political processes and democratic practices. The American states provide a setting where provisions for direct voter participation in legislation vary substantially. If participatory institutions have an 'educative role' that shapes perceptions of government, then citizens exposed to direct democracy may be more likely to claim they understand politics and be more likely to perceive that they are capable of participation. They may also be more likely to perceive that government is responsive to them. We merge …

UNOAI Report 02-2
The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method of comparing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, Airline Quality Rating 2002, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for 2001. AQR scores for the calendar year 2001 are based on 15 elements that focus on airline performance areas important to air travel consumers.
The Airline Quality Rating 2002 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for the 11 largest U.S. airlines operating during 2001. Using the Airline Quality Rating system of weighted averages and monthly performance …

A Decade Of Digital Reference: 1991-2001., Carol Tenopir, Lisa Ennis
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
Four surveys conducted over a decade provide insights about changes that have occurred in academic library reference services due to new and rapidly evolving technologies. Surveys were sent to the academic members of the Association of Research Libraries four times during the past decade: 1991, 1995, 1997, and 2000. The surveys contained both open-ended questions to gather opinions and factual questions to measure what libraries offer. Libraries adopted digital information sources and services at an increasingly accelerated rate in the 1990s due to the availability of the Internet, in particular the World Wide Web. Digital sources have brought about changes …

The Changing Face Of Chicago: Demographic Trends In The 1990s, Kenneth M. Johnson
The Changing Face Of Chicago: Demographic Trends In The 1990s, Kenneth M. Johnson
Sociology
The population of the Chicago metropolitan area grew by 869,000 (11.6%) between 1990 and 2000, the largest decade of growth in 30 years. The gain of 112,000 in the City of Chicago was the first in more than 50 years. Overall, gains were greatest in the outer suburbs and smallest in the city. Much of this growth was fueled by immigration and natural increase, with Hispanics contributing disproportionately to both.
Review Of Changing The Way America Farms: Knowledge And Community In The Sustainable Agriculture Movement By Neva Hassanein, Patricia Allen
Review Of Changing The Way America Farms: Knowledge And Community In The Sustainable Agriculture Movement By Neva Hassanein, Patricia Allen
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
This book makes a significant contribution to the literature on the sustainable agriculture movement in the United States. While Hassanein acknowledges that the movement arose in response to systematic, global problems, her purpose here is to go beyond large-scale analysis of the movement and dig deeply into what makes it tick at the local level. Her interest is in the dynamics within the movement and in the ways that knowledge is created and disseminated in the sustainable farming networks that operate largely outside public agricultural research and extension systems. For this she selects two case studies, the Ocooch Grazers Network …
Service Learning As A Transition Into Foundation Field, Nancy P. Kropf, Mininder Tracey
Service Learning As A Transition Into Foundation Field, Nancy P. Kropf, Mininder Tracey
SW Publications
Service learning is a pedagogical method to bridge classroom and community experiences for students. Although social work education has historically emphasized this connection through internship experiences, service learning can fill a different function within the curriculum. This article proposes a service learning experience to assist graduate students with the transition into their foundation field placement. Beneficial outcomes of using service learning as an educational bridge are discussed for students, faculty, and the social work program.
America’S Public Diplomacy: An Experience At U.S. Embassy Moscow, Kendra Killmer
America’S Public Diplomacy: An Experience At U.S. Embassy Moscow, Kendra Killmer
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
I applied to intern for the State Department during the fall of 2001 and was assigned to the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia. At first I was perplexed by this appointment because as a major in political science, with a focus on international and comparative politics, I had never been exposed to public diplomacy and the U.S. government’s public diplomacy apparatus. In our political science undergraduate education we were taught about international relations through the organization of government activity, actions of top leaders and specific historical events. I was completely unaware of the practice …
Do China And Hong Kong Constitute An Optimum Currency Area?, Yue Ma, Shu Ki Tsang
Do China And Hong Kong Constitute An Optimum Currency Area?, Yue Ma, Shu Ki Tsang
CAPS Working Paper Series
After the political unification of Hong Kong with China, Hong Kong is supposed to function as a separate economic entity under the framework of "one country, two systems". However, the increasingly close ties between the two economices have raised the possibility of full economic integration, and even of monetary union as the Chinese currency progresses towards full convertibility. This paper employs the theory of optimum currency area (OCA) and adopts recently developed techniques to test whether China and Hong Kong constitute an OCA. The empirical findings based on disaggregated historical data are overwhelmingly negative. Other considerations also point to a …

Economic Development Incentive Wars: What Influence Do State And Local Economic Development Incentives Have On The Location Decisions Of Firms?, Chris Lockie
Major Themes in Economics
State and local policymakers throughout the country experience tremendous pressure from their constituents to create policy tools that spur job growth and reduce unemployment in their jurisdictions. One tool that has been viewed by policymakers as useful in stimulating job growth and reducing unemployment has been economic development incentives. Despite this view, there has been growing concern over the cost effectiveness of these incentives. This paper provides a comprehensive discussion of the issues surrounding economic development incentives and evidence from four different methods of study as to the influence incentives have had on employment growth in states and counties throughout …

In the Final Four that concluded yesterday in San Antonio basketball with a retro look graced the hardwood court (or was it some synthetic composite) for the first time in years. Those who have watched the University of Connecticut glide with precision to their undefeated season and NCAA Championship have been treated to a brand of basketball emphasizing team play, sharp cuts and passes, and a group of women who play with great intensity and joy.
