Review Of The Essential Aldo Leopold: Quotations And Commentaries Edited By Curt D. Meine And Richard L. Knight, Thomas R. Dunlap Apr 2002

Review Of The Essential Aldo Leopold: Quotations And Commentaries Edited By Curt D. Meine And Richard L. Knight, Thomas R. Dunlap

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

A book of quotations is always suspect, and one on Leopold doubly so. The form suggests hagiography, which Leopold scholarship does not need, or the desire to make accessible an important but obscure body of thought, which is not the case with Leopold. Even more alarming, the editors have arranged Leopold's ideas into categories, although one of his great strengths was his willingness to think across intellectual boundaries. Dipping into the collection, however, allays all fears. This volume gives the general reader a good, well-organized look at Leopold's ideas. Scholars get a lot more: a wealth of quotations for lectures …

Culture And Ecology Of Latinos On The Great Plains: An Introduction, Gustavo Carlo, Miguel A. Carranza, Byron Zamboanga Apr 2002

Culture And Ecology Of Latinos On The Great Plains: An Introduction, Gustavo Carlo, Miguel A. Carranza, Byron Zamboanga

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The topic of culture is relevant when focusing on Latinos on the Great Plains. It is evident that Latinos, both as individuals and as group members, exhibit various dimensions of culture in their day-to-day lives. What becomes problematic is how culture is defined and/or operationalized in assessing the Latino experience.

Several definitions of culture serve to demonstrate that culture is one of the most difficult terms to describe. One of the earliest definitions comes from E. B. Tylor who perceived culture as "that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired …

Distribution Of Eastern Woodrats In A Grassland-Woodland Mosaic: Influence Of Vegetation And Fire, Jon P. Beckmann, Glennis A. Kaufman, Donald Kaufman Apr 2002

Distribution Of Eastern Woodrats In A Grassland-Woodland Mosaic: Influence Of Vegetation And Fire, Jon P. Beckmann, Glennis A. Kaufman, Donald Kaufman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The eastern woodrat is a characteristic, charismatic rodent in the prairie region. We assessed the distribution of eastern woodrats (Neotoma floridana) within the mosaic of interspersed grasslands and woodlands on the Konza Prairie Biological Station. In summer 1996 we recorded the placement of eastern woodrat nests in 10 areas that differed in prescribed fire regimes. Although most vegetation in our study sites (>90% of the area) was native tallgrass prairie, all of the nests (n = 122) were associated with woody-shrubby vegetation. Nests of the eastern woodrat were more common along limestone outcrops that had trees and …

Review Of Biodiversity And Democracy: Rethinking Society And Nature By Paul M. Woods, Richard K. Baydack Apr 2002

Review Of Biodiversity And Democracy: Rethinking Society And Nature By Paul M. Woods, Richard K. Baydack

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Biodiversity and Democracy is a well-written book about the challenges of conserving biological diversity within the democratic societies of North America. Paul Woods espouses a novel and innovative viewpoint on the need to conserve biological diversity over the long haul, a concept not generally well-refined in democratic societies. Woods argues that a new paradigm-The Priority of Biodiversity Principle-needs to take precedence in decision-making. In short, Woods recommends that in public land-use decisions, the conservation of biological diversity should take priority over short-term public interest. Though exactly how decision-makers can ascertain if the Principle has been adhered to is a question …

An Analysis Of Remote Communication Processes Involved In Video- Mediated And Text-Based Computer-Mediated Communication During Collaborative Problem Solving, Maria Victoria Ramos Apr 2002

An Analysis Of Remote Communication Processes Involved In Video- Mediated And Text-Based Computer-Mediated Communication During Collaborative Problem Solving, Maria Victoria Ramos

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of current available communication mediums on the process of collaborative problem solving tasks in today's modern society. Seven male-only dyads were asked to complete two tasks, both with a finite and definable solution, by communicating through one of three possible ways: face-to- face (FTF), a synchronous text-based computer system (CMC), and a video-mediated system (VMC). The effectiveness of the medium was evaluated based on time to solution, number of turns and words in relation to a visual search task and a spatial task. Results showed a significant difference in time …

The State Lottery Tax: An Equity Analysis, Ben Smith Apr 2002

The State Lottery Tax: An Equity Analysis, Ben Smith

Major Themes in Economics

This paper finds the state lottery tax to be vertically inequitable. The tax is inherently regressive, meaning poorer income classes spend a larger share of their income on lottery products than higher income classes. The paper also finds the lottery tax to be horizontally inequitable. Older people, males, less educated individuals, and minorities (except Asians) all tend to spend more on lottery products than their respective counterparts. Policy makers should lower the implicit tax rate from its current level of 44% to 19%. A decrease in the tax rate will increase state revenue, increase consumer surplus, possibly stimulate the economy, …

The Private Prison Debate: A Look Into The Efficiency Of Private Prisons Vs. Public Prisons, Megan Swanson Apr 2002

The Private Prison Debate: A Look Into The Efficiency Of Private Prisons Vs. Public Prisons, Megan Swanson

Major Themes in Economics

The resurgence of private prisons during the 1980s has caused a lot of debate. If a private firm can run a prison more efficiently than the government, the government should allow privatization. Factors such as cost, quality of service, competition and liability must be examined in order to determine whether a private prison is more efficient than a public prison.

Organ Donation System: Revision In Three Phases And Counterarguments To Concerns Presented By Proponents Of The Current Altruistic System, Beth Gansen Apr 2002

Organ Donation System: Revision In Three Phases And Counterarguments To Concerns Presented By Proponents Of The Current Altruistic System, Beth Gansen

Major Themes in Economics

In 1984, organ donation was formally organized in the United States under the National Transplant Act. The legislation established many necessary institutions, but did not address the issue of rising demand and stagnant supply. Altruists believe education is the answer, but this approach has sentenced thousands to death. Commercialization of organ procurement is a viable solution. Commercializing the procurement sector will increase efficiency, alleviate shortages, and save lives. The policy and legal implications are complex but a basic outline for a commercialized system is derived from researchers’ suggestions, economics, and lessons from the commercialized sperm donation system. Objections to commercialization …

Random Selection Of Citizens For Technological Decision Making, L. Carson, Brian Martin Apr 2002

Random Selection Of Citizens For Technological Decision Making, L. Carson, Brian Martin

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Random selection provides a way to overcome some of the usual problems of citizen participation in technological decision making. It offers representativeness with a minimum of bias and susceptibility to vested interests. There are a number of requirements for the effectiveness of the random selection approach, such as that citizens are interested and capable of rational deliberation. A number of recent experiments with policy juries and planning cells are assessed to see how well they satisfy the requirements for the effectiveness of the approach. While random selection shows great promise as a means for involving citizens in technological decision making, …

Explaining Differences In Civic Knowledge: Multilevel Regression Analyses Of Student Data From 27 Countries, Wolfram Schulz

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

What explains the differences in student knowledge about Democracy, institutions and Citizenship and their skills in interpreting political communication? Does the amount of 'civic knowledge' depend mainly on the home environment, on the students' level of communication and activities in the area of politics, or does school make a difference in acquiring this knowledge? Which student-level and school-level factors do have an effect on cognitive abilities in this domain? The second lEA Civic Education Study provides data on 14-year-old students from 28 countries from Europe, North America, South America, Asia and the Pacific which can be used to study the …
