Orthoprosthetic Technical Assessment Of Power’S Program In Mozambique, Usaid-Leahy

Global CWD Repository

Evaluates project to develop a sustainable program to provide orthopedic assistance to Mozambicans disabled by civil war and its lingering after effects -- landmines. Evaluation covers the period 1998-4/02. In 1998, as a result of the establishment of a new unit within the Ministry of Health (MISAU), the Section of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (SMFR), and recommendations made in a USAID-sponsored evaluation, the program's focus shifted from direct involvement in the management and administration of rehabilitation services to providing TA, long-term training opportunities and support to indigenous disability advocacy groups, with Prosthetic and Orthotic Worldwide Education and Relief (POWER) serving …

Perception Of Competence In Male And Female Pilots: Between Group Differences, Marianne Paulsen Apr 2002

Perception Of Competence In Male And Female Pilots: Between Group Differences, Marianne Paulsen

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study investigated the relationship between gender and competence as perceived by pilots. Scenarios were utilized that depicted an airline captain successfully landing an airplane amidst adverse conditions. Scenarios varied only by the gender of the Captain: male, female, or unspecified by variance of pilot name. Perceived effectiveness, competence, avoidance, blame, and attribution as depicted by the Captain's performance in the scenario were assessed by 30 male and 30 female certified flight instructors. Results showed that female flight instructors' ratings of avoidance ability and attribution for success differed from male flight instructors. Attribution for blame differences between scenario conditions was …

Demographic Factors Predictive Of Medicaid Enrollment In Michigan Counties, Dale Kennedy Howe Apr 2002

Demographic Factors Predictive Of Medicaid Enrollment In Michigan Counties, Dale Kennedy Howe

Dissertations

Recent changes in administration of the Medicaid program make it imperative that local agencies improve their ability to forecast demand for Medicaid services. In October of 1998 the State of Michigan redesigned the Medicaid specialty care in Michigan from a fee-for-service system to a capitated system. In a capitated healthcare system, financial risk is a result of unanticipated changes in the population size and mix. Numerous demographic factors, such as crime, population, unemployment, median age, income, and ethnicity may be used to improve the accuracy of predicted changes in enrollment for Medicaid. Using naive ordinary least squares models as the …

Using Bibliometric Journal Citation Analysis As A Technique To Assess Trends In School Psychology Journal Publications From 1995-1999, Meg Kwak

Dissertations

School psychology is a field influenced by die many different areas within psychology and education. School psychologists respond to many challenges and when working in the schools it is imperative that they stay abreast of the newest research findings. In order to remain informed, as well as to develop new knowledge, it is essential that professionals are aware o f the influences of the publications and the relative strength of specific journals (Kawano, Kehle, Clark, & Jenson, 1993). One way to assess publication trends is through journal citation analysis. Citation analysis is characterized by its objective ability to highlight the …

An Examination Of The Effects Of Fluency Training On Retention, Distractibility, And Generativity, Victoria Mary Pellettiere Apr 2002

An Examination Of The Effects Of Fluency Training On Retention, Distractibility, And Generativity, Victoria Mary Pellettiere

Dissertations

The Precision Teaching movement grew out of a commitment to use frequency as a universal measure of behavior, as well as the desire to employ research methods derived from the experimental analysis of behavior in education (Lindsley, 1991). One component of instruction employing the precision teaching model is fluency training that typically involves exposing learners to the training materials until they have met criteria for both accuracy and speed. Proponents of fluency training ascribe a number of specific benefits to this instructional tool. Lindsley (1992, 1995) and others (Binder, 1993, 1996; Haughton, 1981b) suggested that fluency training enhances retention, endurance, …

Lever-Press Acquisition By Rats: Effects Of Some Historical Variables, Susan M. Snycerski Apr 2002

Lever-Press Acquisition By Rats: Effects Of Some Historical Variables, Susan M. Snycerski

Dissertations

Traditionally, behavior analysts and behavioral pharmacologists have emphasized the study of steady-state behavior, while neglecting behavior in transition. In the last 10 years, researchers in these fields have begun to investigate behavioral transitions, particularly the transition from near-zero to above-zero responding involved in response acquisition. This research has focused on variables (e.g., reinforcement delay) that affect acquisition and on procedures (e.g., resetting vs. nonresetting delays) used to assess acquisition. Most studies of acquisition have provided their subjects with behavioral histories prior to testing for acquisition, but few have systematically investigated the importance of historical variables. Consequently, the present study examined …

Using Measures Of Intervention Integrity, Intervention Acceptability, And Intervention Effectiveness To Evaluate A Toilet Training Program In A Preschool Classroom For Children With Special Needs, Katherine M. Holverstott-Cockrell

Dissertations

The primary objective of this study is to use measures of intervention integrity, intervention acceptability, and intervention effectiveness identified by Witt and Elliott (1985) to evaluate the toilet training program in a preschool classroom. The second objective is to assess the effects of parent participation with the toileting program. The third objective is to assess the effects of the toilet training intervention. Specifically, this study investigated (a) the relationship between intervention integrity, acceptability, and effectiveness of a toilet training intervention implemented in a preschool setting and at home; (b) the relationship between parental participation with the intervention and the efficacy …

Organizational Alignment: A Tool For Obtaining Greater Organizational Efficiency And Effectiveness In A State Government Agency, Patricia A. Collins Apr 2002

Organizational Alignment: A Tool For Obtaining Greater Organizational Efficiency And Effectiveness In A State Government Agency, Patricia A. Collins

Dissertations

This study focuses on the modem day use of TQM, reengineering and privatization initiatives to gain efficiency and effectiveness in government operations, and the impact of alignment on the successful implementation of these three initiatives. A large state government agency which is currently using TQM, reengineering and privatization was used as a case study. Two-hundred-and-twenty-four employees were voluntary participants. This study examined three research questions: 1. Could the level of alignment, as hypothesized by Labovitz and Rosansky, be replicated with a sample of public agency employees? 2. Is the agency aligned, based on the Labovitz and Rosansky model, to successfully …

Who's In Charge? Appointments Of Latinos To Policymaking Offices And Boards In Massachusetts, Carol Hardy-Fanta Apr 2002

Who's In Charge? Appointments Of Latinos To Policymaking Offices And Boards In Massachusetts, Carol Hardy-Fanta

Gastón Institute Publications

As the Latino population in Massachusetts continues to grow, there has been a corresponding increase in the number of Latinos achieving elected office throughout the state. Twenty years ago there was only one Latino serving in elected office in Massachusetts—Nelson Merced. In 1995, there were only four elected officials who were Latino and no state representatives. Today, through the hard work of candidates, activists, and Latino community activists and organizations, there are three Latinos serving as state legislators, fourteen holding municipal office, and an increasing number of campaigns at all levels of municipal and state government being conducted.

While this …

White-Tailed Deer Browsing On Six Shrub Species Of Tallgrass Prairie, Dirk-Jan Van Der Hoek, Alan K. Knapp, John M. Briggs, Jan Bokdam Apr 2002

White-Tailed Deer Browsing On Six Shrub Species Of Tallgrass Prairie, Dirk-Jan Van Der Hoek, Alan K. Knapp, John M. Briggs, Jan Bokdam

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations have in the past, and continue today, to increase in the Great Plains and North America. However, their impact on native plant species and endangered ecosystems such as the tallgrass prairie is poorly documented. To better understand the consequences of increasing deer numbers for native shrubs in grasslands, we assessed the extent of their summer browsing activity on six shrub species (wild plum, rough-leaved dogwood, smooth sumac, fragrant sumac, and coralberry) along transects that spanned riparian margins to upland tallgrass prairie. The proportion of terminal shoots browsed was quantified along established white-tail deer …

Spatial Description And Analysis Of Grasshopper Abundances In Colorado Rangeland, Kerri Skinner, R. Dennis Child, Thomas O. Holtzer Apr 2002

Spatial Description And Analysis Of Grasshopper Abundances In Colorado Rangeland, Kerri Skinner, R. Dennis Child, Thomas O. Holtzer

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Although rangeland grasshopper populations have been studied for more than 120 years, little is known of the spatial patterns in grasshopper numbers between outbreak cycles. This information is necessary to understand how grasshopper outbreaks develop and to correctly design research, monitoring, and modeling projects. We used exploratory data analysis and geostatistics to identify the spatial patterns in grasshopper numbers for 1993 through 1997 in Colorado. The same family of models (spherical) provided the best fit to the sample data for all years, which implies that similar processes influenced grasshopper densities over these years. The parameters of the models differed among …

Review Of Creating Colorado: The Making Of A Western American Landscape, 1860-1940 By William Wyckoff, Brian Page Apr 2002

Review Of Creating Colorado: The Making Of A Western American Landscape, 1860-1940 By William Wyckoff, Brian Page

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The history of Colorado has been well portrayed, but most often in geographical bits and pieces. What has been missing from this literature is a comprehensive view of how these constituents coalesce into a coherent picture of the formation and evolution of the state's geography of human production, settlement, movement, power, and meaning. William Wyckoff's Creating Colorado provides a panoptic view of Colorado's geographical history rendered in broad stokes and a fluid, eloquent prose.

Effect Of Flea Beetles (Aphthona Nigriscutis) On Prairie Invaded By Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) In Maintoba, Michelle Mico, Jennifer Shay Apr 2002

Effect Of Flea Beetles (Aphthona Nigriscutis) On Prairie Invaded By Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) In Maintoba, Michelle Mico, Jennifer Shay

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) is an invasive exotic weed in Great Plains rangelands and pastures. Aphthona nigriscutis, the black dot flea beetle, was released as a biological control agent in nine heavily infested sites in south-central Manitoba (three sites in 1986, three in 1988, and three in 1990). In 1992 we evaluated beetle impact by sampling the vegetation in 25 x 25 cm quadrats. We measured cover, height, density, and biomass of leafy spurge, the cover of litter and bare ground, and the presence of other plant species both at the release point and at randomly-chosen nearby …

Latino Families In The Perinatal Period: Cultural Issues In Dealing With The Health-Care System, J. Martin Maldonado-Duran, Maria Manguia-Wellman, Sari Lubin, Teresa Lartigue Apr 2002

Latino Families In The Perinatal Period: Cultural Issues In Dealing With The Health-Care System, J. Martin Maldonado-Duran, Maria Manguia-Wellman, Sari Lubin, Teresa Lartigue

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Migration of young Latinos and Latinas has increased in many towns in the Midwest. These young people will experience the perinatal period in a new cultural environment. We focus on the interface between families of Latino origin and the Midwest health-care system, particularly in the care of the pregnant woman or couple and in the care of the infant. Issues of culture are central in the perinatal period, and often the staff in health-care centers is not aware of the importance of several traditional and "folk" health-care beliefs in this period. These beliefs impact the care of the pregnant woman, …
