Are Social Norms Campaigns Really Magic Bullets? Assessing The Effects Of Students' Misperceptions On Drinking Behavior, Michelle Campo, Dominique Brossard, S. Frazer, Timothy Marchell Sep 2003

Are Social Norms Campaigns Really Magic Bullets? Assessing The Effects Of Students' Misperceptions On Drinking Behavior, Michelle Campo, Dominique Brossard, S. Frazer, Timothy Marchell

Michelle L. Campo

In an attempt to curb excessive drinking on college campuses, many universities have turned to "social norms" marketing campaigns. Despite widespread acceptance among health educators, empirical results are clouded by measurement problems. This study, based on a random sample of 550 students, examined the effects of misperceptions of friends' and typical college students' drinking on one's drinking behavior. Results indicate that drinking behavior is positively related to perceptions of friends' drinking as suggested by the theory of planned behavior, which emphasizes subjective as opposed to social norms.

Case-Based Reasoning In Fixture Design, David Brown, Iain Boyle, Kevin Rong Sep 2003

Case-Based Reasoning In Fixture Design, David Brown, Iain Boyle, Kevin Rong

David C. Brown

Fixtures are designed to accurately locate and secure a part during machining operations such that the part can be manufactured to design specifications. To reduce the design costs associated with fixturing, various computer-aided fixture design (CAFD) methods have been developed through the years to assist the fixture designer. One approach is to use a case-based reasoning (CBR) approach where relevant design experience is retrieved from a design library, and adapted to provide a new fixture design solution. Indexing design cases is a critical issue in any CBR approach, and CBR systems can suffer from an inability to distinguish between cases …

Hiding In Plain Sight: A Practical Guide To Identifying Victims Of Trafficking In The U.S., Donna M. Hughes Dr. Sep 2003

Hiding In Plain Sight: A Practical Guide To Identifying Victims Of Trafficking In The U.S., Donna M. Hughes Dr.

Donna M. Hughes

This practical guide focuses on identifying victims of sexual trafficking, meaning they have been trafficked for commercial sex acts, such as prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation, such as stripping, lap dancing, or production of pornography. Although there are commonalities between victims of sexual and labor trafficking, there are sufficient differences to require separate focus. Therefore, this guide does not describe ways to identify victims who have been trafficked for forced labor, such as domestic servants and sweat shop or migrant farm workers.

Mardu Foraging, Food Sharing, And Gender, Douglas W. Bird Sep 2003

Mardu Foraging, Food Sharing, And Gender, Douglas W. Bird

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

Among Aboriginal people in Australia's deserts, as among all humans, food acquisition is not simply about eating: practices related to what types of foods are acquired, who obtains the food, how food is treated and distributed, are infused with value other than simple nutrition. Often these practices are attached to gender roles. Traditional explanations have assumed that gender differences in foraging and food sharing are bound by a common goal of provisioning--that like a mini-economy of scale, a household will be better provisioned through gender specialization. But recent work among other people that hunt and gather suggests that under some …

The Economic Impact Of The Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository On The Economy Of Nevada, Mary Riddel, Martin Boyett, R. Keith Schwer Sep 2003

The Economic Impact Of The Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository On The Economy Of Nevada, Mary Riddel, Martin Boyett, R. Keith Schwer

Publications (YM)

Current Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) operations provide relatively high-wage employment to the Nevada economy and constitute an economically stable proportion of the total gross state product (GSP). If the YMP were discontinued, economic losses, relative to the current economy, would be substantial. In 2000, the YMP contributed $195.7 million to the Nevada economy and an additional $188.6 million in 2001. The YMP was responsible for 3,650 jobs in 2000. This translates into a real disposable income of roughly $131 million earned each year in the state of Nevada.

Columbian Society In The 1990s : Fragmentation, Legitimacy, And Efficiency, Luis Javier Orjuela

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the nineties, Colombia experienced a two-fold process of restructuring. First, the political system underwent a process of constitutional reform in order to strengthen the state and increase its legitimacy, surpass the exclusionary character of the political regime, and achieve greater equity in the distribution of social resources. Second, the economy made the transition from a Keynesian development strategy to a strategy of "opening" or liberalization and internationalization of the economy, in order to increase the economic efficiency by reducing the “size” of the state and its regulatory role. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the interplay and …

Iron Age Chariots And Medieval Texts: A Step Too Far In "Breaking Down Boundaries"?, Raimund Karl Sep 2003

Iron Age Chariots And Medieval Texts: A Step Too Far In "Breaking Down Boundaries"?, Raimund Karl

e-Keltoi: Journal of Interdisciplinary Celtic Studies

Analysing “Celtic” chariots by using Iron Age archaeological material and Early Medieval Irish texts might seem to be more than just one step too far in breaking down boundaries. Considering the huge chronological and geographical gaps between the sources, the objections raised against the concept of “Celticity” by Celtosceptics, and the antinativist school of thought in Irish literature, such an approach might look like outright nonsense to many archaeologists and scholars in medieval literature alike. Using a “functional” method according to the new Viennese approach to Celtic Studies, to allow cross-disciplinary comparison of archaeological, historical, iconographic, legal, linguistic, literary and …

A BM-12 smoke shell was reported near the Safe UXO Store of [Demining group] teams working in Logar province. The acting TL briefed the SL to take the UXO away and demolish it. Mr. Paya-I-Din was climbing a hill while taking the UXO to the demolition pit, slipped and the accident happened. It is worth-mentioning that the UXO he was carrying did not explode and apparently a BD RPG7 fuse caused the injuries.
