Toward A Theory Of Heritage Language Acquisition: Spanish In The United States, Andrew Lynch
Toward A Theory Of Heritage Language Acquisition: Spanish In The United States, Andrew Lynch
Andrew Lynch
The sociolinguistic realities of English and Spanish, at the national and world levels, have evolved in fundamental ways since the 1960s. Traditional theoretical models of language variation, bilingualism, and language shift in the US must be reconceptualized with the post-2000 context, and Spanish language educators must respond to the contemporary demands of their profession. In this essay, I give thought to the theoretical principles of Spanish heritage language acquisition in the US in the twenty-first century.
Nationalism In Indonesia: Building Imagined And Intentional Communities Through Transmigration, Brian A. Hoey
Nationalism In Indonesia: Building Imagined And Intentional Communities Through Transmigration, Brian A. Hoey
Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.
This article will discuss the Indonesian government’s population resettlement program to explore different ways of looking at the idea of community and community building. Transmigration settlements are both planned and intentional communities. They are planned in accordance to government priorities, which intend them to serve in the building of an imagined community – a unified nation. They are also places where settlers struggle, following their own intent, to build their own personal, everyday vision of community as a place where they feel that they belong. This article will introduce the basic history of the program and its place in the …

THIS STUDY documents dramatic improvements in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and explores their possible determinants. From a sample of the 160 carefully diagnosed borderline patients on whom prospective follow-along data was collected, a subsample of 18 was identified whose DSM-IV criteria count fell to two or fewer during the course of the first 6 months of the study and retained that improvement for the next 6 months. Follow-along data including month-by-month ratings of BPD criteria; week-by-week ratings of Axis I disorders, medication changes, and life events were then used to establish concensus ratings on four hypothesized causes: Axis …
Free-Riding On Federalism: Trade Protection And The Canadian Dairy Industry, Kathy Baylis, W. Hartley Furtan
Free-Riding On Federalism: Trade Protection And The Canadian Dairy Industry, Kathy Baylis, W. Hartley Furtan
Kathy Baylis
This paper examines the link between federalism, rent-seeking and free-riding behaviour. Using data from the Canadian dairy industry, we test four hypotheses of the determinants of rent-seeking expenditure and the role of free-riding. First, we find that provinces do not cooperate with each other when lobbying the federal government for trade protection. Second, some provinces are found to free ride on the rent-seeking expenditure of the larger (more influential) provinces. Third, the cost of rent-seeking increases when the government is forced to make a decision regarding the future of the protectionist policies. Fourth, institutional changes under the 1994 GATT raised …

El Voto Electrónico. Nuevas Tendencias Y Experiencias De La Democracia Tecnológica, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte
Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

t: The primary aim of this article is to look at the impact of drugs on the drug-using Black population, and in doing so, the article draws comparative attention to drug use within the White community. The article is based on a research study of problem drug users registered with a London drugs project in 2000 and 2001. During the period of fieldwork, the vast majority of clients of the drug project were male, and the gap in the sex composition of the clients was more conspicuous in the Black group. For the sake of clarity in the use of …
