Are They Really Teachers? Problem-Based Learning And Information Professionals, Michael Anderson, Virginia Baldwin Sep 2003

Are They Really Teachers? Problem-Based Learning And Information Professionals, Michael Anderson, Virginia Baldwin

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Traditionally, working with teaching faculty is the primary consulting role for most faculty development professionals. The boundaries, however, are not always clear regarding instructional assistance that is provided to other personnel. This chapter demonstrates how collaboration among faculty consultants and information specialists can result in enhanced library utilization and bett er research-related instruction. Our model uses problem-based learning (PEL) as a vehicle for teaching research and retrieval skills in either a single class experience or in multiple classroom visits with an engineering librarian.

Computer Literacy: Necessity Or Buzzword?, Scott Childers Sep 2003

Computer Literacy: Necessity Or Buzzword?, Scott Childers

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

While the concept of computer literacy has existed for some time, the name has certainly changed. Whatever the name, the concept of computer literacy still has merit. By looking af the history of the computer literacy movement for grounding, we can build a definition for the next century and affirm that learning computer basics is a good thing for library staf to do.

The term computer literacy seems to have faded from library literature, but has the belief that the general populace should possess a basic computer-skill level faded as well? Have we already achieved this nebulous goal, or has …

Norms, Rationality, And Communication: A Reputation Theory Of Social Norms, Andreas Engert Sep 2003

Norms, Rationality, And Communication: A Reputation Theory Of Social Norms, Andreas Engert

ExpressO

Does the discovery of "law and social norms" necessitate breaking with the rational choice paradigm? In this paper, I argue for an answer in the negative. To this end, I propose a reputation theory of social norms, which differs from other proposals in two principal respects: First, it explains norms without any assumption of behavioral constraints (like habit or conscience) and normative motivations (like altruism or aspiration to esteem). Second, it does even without any assumption regarding model-exogenous, private information that most other reputation and signaling explanations use (such as the discount rate in Eric Posner's signaling model).

Instead, reputation …

The Evidence For Pain In Fish: The Use Of Morphine As An Analgesic, Lynne U. Sneddon Sep 2003

The Evidence For Pain In Fish: The Use Of Morphine As An Analgesic, Lynne U. Sneddon

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

This paper discusses the evidence for pain perception in fish and presents new data on morphine analgesia in fish. Recent anatomical and electrophysiological studies have demonstrated that fish are capable of nociception, the simple detection of a noxious, potentially painful stimulus and the reflex response to this. To prove pain perception, it must be demonstrated that an animal’s behaviour is adversely affected by a potentially painful event and this must not be a reflex response. The present study examined the acute effects of administering a noxious chemical to the lips of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to assess what changes occurred …

Measuring What We Do, Kim James Sep 2003

Measuring What We Do, Kim James

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

When I first joined the University Library in 2000 the Library was in the process of establishing formal agreements with many of its monograph suppliers in the form of Service Level Agreements. Our first SLAs were signed with all our major suppliers in either 2000 or 2001. The SLA's not only document the agreed terms of trade between parties but they include scope for mutual benefit between the parties by sharing of information and collaboration. The benefits of establishing SLAs and improving performance measurement information include: • Improved business relationships with suppliers; • Increased confidence by both parties; • More …

Special Article. Creation Of Delusions, Ibpp Editor

International Bulletin of Political Psychology

At the age of 15 Dr. Karl Ericson was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. After electroshock and high doses of thorazine, he recovered enough to gain some insight into his condition and developed self-help methods for himself which were published in the Journal of Humanistic Psychology. Since then he has created a web site that combines his thoughts on politics, self-help, religion and philosophy and has written a preliminary online computer aided self-help program (3). Having suffered from delusions and paranoia, Dr. Ericson is acutely aware of delusions and paranoia in society and in political thinking. He published "Creation of Paranoia" …

The Anchor, Volume 117.03: September 3, 2003, Hope College

The Anchor: 2003

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
