Using qualitative and descriptive quantitative data collected in Dalton, Georgia, a small city located in the southern Appalachia region, this article shows how previously accumulated social capital and funds of knowledge are facilitating settlement with collective and individual level …

This incident is classed as a “Missed-mine accident” because it seems that the device that detonated was inside the area cleared. If it was not, then this would become yet another “Survey accident” (the demining group had several in Iraq at this time). The primary cause of this accident is listed as a “Field control inadequacy” because the victims went to place markers in an area that was believed to be safe but which was not. Those responsible for the work should have kept an accurate record of the safe area. It seems that the field controllers may also have …

Using public opinion surveys, historical documents, and current news articles and books, I will analyze the Truman Doctrine, enunciated in 1947, and the Bush Doctrine, put forth in 2001. In doing so, I hope to compare military actions justified using both doctrines, and point out what I see to be the flaws and triumphs of the Bush Doctrine; …

David Beckham Sold Off To Madrid, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The sale of David Beckham by Manchester United to Real Madrid must be the highest profile transnational sports transfer since Wayne Gretzky was shipped out of Edmonton to Los Angeles. There were moves in the Canadian Parliament to designate the Great One as a national treasure to prevent that sale from completion and Canadians went into a period of national mourning. Neither Tony Blair nor his Minister of Sport suggested such an action at Westminster but still there was considerable reaction among British football fanatics.
