Mr. Espino was first hired in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he worked for a year; during his time as a bracero he worked in Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, and Arizona; he recounts his difficulties while working illegally; he also recalls the percentage the Mexican government received from the United States for each bracero worker; he lead a protest to stop the delousing process for braceros entering the United States; in addition, he also remembers that the Bracero Program was suspended for an entire year in 1959.

Vanishing Point: An Examination Of Some Consequences Of Globalization For Contemporary Irish Film, Sean Crosson
e-Keltoi: Journal of Interdisciplinary Celtic Studies
In the following article, some films produced with the support of Bord Scannán na hÉireann (The Irish Film Board) since its reconstitution in 1993 are examined in light of the work of global anthropologist Arjun Appadurai and his theory of global cultural flows. I suggest that cinema, primarily of Hollywood origin, has had a notable influence on the development of Irish society and Irish film. Contemporary Irish film itself also reflects the failure of Irish history to excite the imagination of Ireland’s youth as effectively as the seductive depictions of America’s past as mediated through the Western and gangster films. …

On Sport and Society
In the past two months I have come to an entirely new appreciation of intercollegiate athletics. I now see how it serves the aims of higher education and builds character. It is clear that it is not about the money and that coaches are true educators guiding young men and women to a life of the highest ethical and moral standards. I have been wrong and I am willing to stand tall and admit it. This is clearly an institution within the institution of higher learning that is worth protecting, preserving, and cherishing.

Water, Climate and Uncertainty: Implications for Western Water Law, Policy, and Management (Summer Conference, June 11-13)
The swollen creeks of Boulder, Colorado provided a fitting backdrop for the “Water, Climate and Uncertainty” conference at the Natural Resources Law Center of the University of Colorado in June 2003. Recognizing the importance of providing a forum for discussions between water managers, lawyers, policy makers, and scientists, Doug Kenney, the conference's organizer, assumed the responsibility of master of ceremonies, providing thoughtful transitions between speakers and sessions while throwing some humor into the mix. Under his direction, luminaries in the fields of science, law and policy engaged a wide range of issues related to the future of water management.

State Of The Union Addresses And Their Impact On Popularity And Credibility, Lea L. Shapiro
State Of The Union Addresses And Their Impact On Popularity And Credibility, Lea L. Shapiro
Theses and Dissertations
This is a study of the impact of presidential messages and style upon the American public following the annual State of the Union address. This researcher focused on two similar presidents, Ronald Reagan and William J. Clinton. The State of the Union addresses used were for the years 1982 and 1994, respectively. The impact was measured by the poll results taken before and after each State of the Union speech.
A content analysis of each address was done to determine the major themes and messages and to determine which of those messages resulted in increased poll numbers.
Additionally, this researcher …

Development Of The Sphere Overlap Scale (Sos) : Compartmentalization And The Spillover Hypothesis, Tina Marie Burns
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to create a scale that could measure compartmentalization. In the first of two studies 311 working undergraduates were asked to indicate agreement with 119 items that measured compartmentalization. The resulting scale's reliability and validity were evaluated by having a second sample of 312 working students complete the items that comprise a sphere overlap scale, two measures of spillover, and a measure of personality, coping, and demoralization. Although the study's original goal was not realized, its procedures were successful in developing a short (10-item) measure of work-to-home spillover whose items loaded on a single factor. …

The authors report the case of a 39-year-old sighted woman who displayed non-24-hour sleep–wake cycles following a car accident. The phase relationship between endogenous circadian markers such as plasma melatonin and 6-sulfatoxymelatonin rhythms and self-selected sleep times was abnormal. A laboratory investigation indicated that she was sensitive to bright light as a circadian synchronizer. MRI and brain CT scans were normal, but microscopic brain damage in the vicinity of the suprachiasmatic nucleus or its output pathways is plausible.

The Development Of Language Choice In A German Immersion School, Miranda Kussmaul Novash
The Development Of Language Choice In A German Immersion School, Miranda Kussmaul Novash
Dissertations and Theses
When bilinguals converse with one another, they make choices about which language to speak. Many different factors have been shown to influence adult bilinguals' language choice, including interlocutor, setting, discourse content and discourse function. Less, however, is known about the factors influencing the language choice behavior of young bilinguals. Although case studies have provided into the type of language choice behavior exhibited by individual children, there is a lack of knowledge of the course of development from the language choice behavior of early childhood bilinguals to the more complex behavior of adult bilinguals.
This thesis examines the developmental pattern of …

Old Town Fairview: A Neighborhood Analysis And Implementation Strategy, Kristen Godkin, Johanna Hastay, Eve D. Pepos, Cathreen Richards, Thomas Soppe, Peter Stiffler
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
The purpose of this document is to develop, identify, recommend and prioritize the steps for an implementation strategy that promotes the ongoing revitalization goals for Fairview's Old Town neighborhood that is both tailored to current residents' needs and existing housing costs.
Communities are stronger when residents are actively involved. The Old Town project's effort utilized a community based collaborative approach that included Old Town residents, absentee land owners, the City of Fairview planners and the Portland State University project team. The specific steps included: a demographic profile, a land use analysis, a survey of current housing conditions, a community survey …

Brown-Headed Cowbirds In Grasslands: Their Habitats, Hosts, And Response To Management, Jill A. Shaffer, Christopher M. Goldade, Meghan F. Dinkins, Douglas H. Johnson, Lawrence D. Igl, Betty R. Euliss
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) is an obligate brood parasite whose numbers have increased in recent decades to the potential detriment of the species that they parasitize. Thus, most management efforts focus on discouraging brown-headed cowbird parasitism or controlling brown-headed cowbird populations. Keys to discouraging brown-headed cowbird parasitism or controlling populations of brown-headed cowbirds in the Great Plains are maintaining large expanses of grassland, eliminating foraging areas (e.g., feedlots) and perch sites, and reducing the extent of overgrazed pastures.

Do Fishes Have Nociceptors? Evidence For The Evolution Of A Vertebrate Sensory System, Lynne U. Sneddon, Victoria A. Braithwaite, Michael J. Gentle
Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection
Nociception is the detection of a noxious tissue-damaging stimulus and is sometimes accompanied by a reflex response such as withdrawal. Pain perception, as distinct from nociception, has been demonstrated in birds and mammals but has not been systematically studied in lower vertebrates. We assessed whether a fish possessed cutaneous nociceptors capable of detecting noxious stimuli and whether its behavior was sufficiently adversely affected by the administration of a noxious stimulus. Electrophysiological recordings from trigeminal nerves identified polymodal nociceptors on the head of the trout with physiological properties similar to those described in higher vertebrates. These receptors responded to mechanical pressure, …
