El Milagro: The Miracle Of Service Learning On The Border, Kathleen A. Baca, Elizabeth J. Gutierrez, Luly Valencia-Glenn May 2003

El Milagro: The Miracle Of Service Learning On The Border, Kathleen A. Baca, Elizabeth J. Gutierrez, Luly Valencia-Glenn

Diversity

In 2000, DoZa Ana Branch Community College (DABCC) received a grant from the American Association of Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning program to develop service learning in southern New Mexico. Poised on the United States- Mexico border, DABCC serves a population that includes 40% colonia residents. Colonias are communities within 150 miles of the border that lack basic infrastructure such as paved roads, water and sewage treatment facilities, and adequate housing. DABCC has developed community partnerships with colonia residents and with agencies that provide services within the colonias. In their presentation, a DABCC team will describe service learning …

Organizational Accomplishments & Challenges Of The Milwaukee Community Service Corps, Jay T. Brennan May 2003

Organizational Accomplishments & Challenges Of The Milwaukee Community Service Corps, Jay T. Brennan

Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development—Student Research

In this capstone paper I describe the history and nature of the youth corps movement and also my personal experiences as a project design coordinator with the Milwaukee Community Service Corps (MCSC). Accomplishments and challenges are explored from this perspective relying on the community development literature as well as my expertise in community development to support the findings. I highlight several methods for overcoming some of the fundamental challenges faced by organizations such as a service corps and their funding agencies. I conclude the paper by arguing that the organization serves the City of Milwaukee in numerable ways and with …

An Exploratory Data Analysis Approach For Land Use-Transportation Interaction: The Design And Implementation Of Transland Spatio-Temporal Data Model, Xiaohong Xin May 2003

An Exploratory Data Analysis Approach For Land Use-Transportation Interaction: The Design And Implementation Of Transland Spatio-Temporal Data Model, Xiaohong Xin

Doctoral Dissertations

Land use and transportation interaction is a complex and dynamic process. Many models have been used to study this interaction during the last several decades. Empirical studies suggest that land use and transportation patterns can be highly variable between geographic areas and at different spatial and temporal scales. Identifying these changes presents a major challenge. When we recognize that long-term changes could be affected by other factors such as population growth, economic development, and policy decisions, the challenge becomes even more overwhelming. Most existing land use and transportation interaction models are based on some prior theories and use mathematical or …

An Analysis Of Crime Control Policies In Knoxville’S Public Housing, John W. Barbrey May 2003

An Analysis Of Crime Control Policies In Knoxville’S Public Housing, John W. Barbrey

Doctoral Dissertations

Between the late 1980s and 2001, the Knoxville Community Development Corporation and the Knoxville Police Department implemented policies intended to reduce crime in Knoxville’s public housing. Beginning with pilot programs in two housing sites in 1989, a cooperative relationship between KCDC and KPD emerged that evolved into the KCDC Security Patrol in 1990. By using Arcview software, I was able to separate the yearly violent crime incidents for 1992-2001 that occurred in two separate geographical regions: 1) the area represented by the KCDC housing sites where the policies were implemented, and 2) the remainder of the City of Knoxville. The …

What Is The Web-Based Interactive Advertising (Wia) To Consumers?: Consumer’S Interpretation And Interaction With Wia, Jang-Sun Hwang May 2003

What Is The Web-Based Interactive Advertising (Wia) To Consumers?: Consumer’S Interpretation And Interaction With Wia, Jang-Sun Hwang

Doctoral Dissertations

Although numerous research has examined Web-based interactive advertising (WIA) in recent years, few studies have approached this topic from the consumers’ own perspectives. Much of the literature employed managerial perspectives to examine the effectiveness of WIA with the aim of improving practitioners’ performance. Studies that did deal with consumers often merely measured their uses of WIA and motives for using it without viewing the phenomenon from the consumers’ point-of-view. Unfortunately, this one-sided research trend provides little insight into how consumers deal with interactive advertising in the World Wide Web environment and cannot answer a basic question - do consumers really …

Research Proposal: Dogs As Reducers Of Anxiety In Social Situations, Jennifer L. Sytsma May 2003

Research Proposal: Dogs As Reducers Of Anxiety In Social Situations, Jennifer L. Sytsma

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

For many years animals have played a large part in the average family unit. Animals become more than just pets and begin to be considered a family member or a best friend. With such close relationships developing between owner and pet it would not be far fetched to say that animals could act as a social mediator for those who suffer from chronic anxiety in social situations.

I believe that pets can greatly reduce stress and anxiety during social interactions with those who suffer from social anxiety. Since dogs are the most commonly seen pets in an outside setting most …

Research Proposal: Effects Of Tipping Styles On The Quality Of Service, Allison Paul May 2003

Research Proposal: Effects Of Tipping Styles On The Quality Of Service, Allison Paul

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Occasionally people enjoy, or engage in dinning out at restaurants. People go out to celebrate birthdays, holidays, promotions, and many other special events. However, along with celebration follows showing the server appreciation by tipping. People have their own reasons for tipping big or leaving the server a penny. Some guests tip 5 percent and some tip 50 percent. Most people tip at the end of the meal as compared to the beginning. Some would say that might keep the server on their toes. Many people tip on the speed of the food, if the server kept their beverages full, or …

You Think You’Ve Got Trivials?, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Effect sizes are important for power analysis and meta-analysis. This has led to a debate on reporting effect sizes for studies that are not statistically significant. Contrary and supportive evidence has been offered on the basis of Monte Carlo methods. In this article, clarifications are given regarding what should be simulated to determine the possible effects of piecemeal publishing trivial effect sizes.

Teaching Human Evolution, Joan C. Stevenson, David L. (David Leon) Alles May 2003

Teaching Human Evolution, Joan C. Stevenson, David L. (David Leon) Alles

Anthropology Faculty and Staff Publications

As science educators, we have two goals in writing this paper. The first is to show the importance of teaching human evolution to all students. The second is to provide up-to-date resources for classroom teachers to use in teaching the subject. Secondary biology textbooks suffer from the inherent limitations of mass produced books making it difficult for them to stay current with rapidly changing scientific fields such as paleoanthropology. One of our motives for writing this paper is to compensate for this inherent limitation of textbooks. The most important resource we provide is a review of current scientific research on …

Effects Of Ethanol On Anti-Saccade Task Performance., Sarah A Khan, Kristen Ford, Brian Timney, Stefan Everling May 2003

Effects Of Ethanol On Anti-Saccade Task Performance., Sarah A Khan, Kristen Ford, Brian Timney, Stefan Everling

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

It has been shown that saccade-related neurons in the superior colliculus (SC) display an increased level of prestimulus activity and a higher stimulus-related burst in action potentials preceding direction errors in the anti-saccade task compared with correct anti-saccades. From this, it has been hypothesized that errors occur when the incoming visual signal in the SC passes a threshold and triggers a reflexive saccade. This hypothesis predicts that an attenuated visual signal will reduce the number of direction errors. Since ethanol has been shown to have a suppressive effect on cortical visual event-related potentials (ERPs), the purpose of the present study …

Designing Systems For All Of Us, Carol Tenopir May 2003

Designing Systems For All Of Us, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

Designing systems that serve both librarians and end users remains a necessity because information content providers rely on librarians to make their products available to the public. [John Barnes] reminded the audience that nearly half of all academic or public libraries are facing budget cuts-which directly affects publishers whose main customers are libraries. Barnes emphasized that publishers and libraries are part of a shared community and in a longterm relationship.

Technical Bulletins: Fire (And Police) Departments Liable For Negligent Response, Sid Hemsley

MTAS Publications: Technical Bulletins

Under the Tennessee Governmental Tort Liability Act municipalities are liable for the negligence of their employees, with some exceptions. One of those exceptions is “discretionary functions” (Tennessee Code Annotated (T.C.A.) 29-20-205). However, the act does not define that term. The Tennessee Supreme Court has grappled with both a definition and application of the term in Gordon, et al. vs. City of Henderson, 766 S.W.2d 784 (1988). Although that case involved the delivery of municipal fire services, it contains some language that should cause Tennessee municipalities to look closely at the manner in which they deliver all public safety services.

Single Versus Multiple Drug Focus In Substance Abuse Clinical Trials Research, Nancy M. Petry May 2003

Single Versus Multiple Drug Focus In Substance Abuse Clinical Trials Research, Nancy M. Petry

UCHC Articles - Research

Complex patterns of multiple substance use pose clinical and methodological challenges for substance abuse clinical trials research. To increase measurement precision and internal validity, the modal approach has been to target both treatment interventions and outcome assessment to a single class of abused substance. This strategy warrants reconsideration because it entails limitations in recruitment feasibility and generalization of study findings. This report reviews pros and cons of single versus multiple targeted drugs, suggests guidelines for choosing between these strategies and outlines methods for broadening the scope of substance abuse clinical trails to take abuse of multiple substances into account. We …

Exception Handling For Conflict Resolution In Cross-Organizational Workflows, Zongwei Luo, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof Kochut, I. Budak Arpinar

Kno.e.sis Publications

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) are being increasingly deployed to deliver e-business transactions across organizational boundaries. To ensure a high service quality in such transactions, exception-handling schemes for conflict resolution are needed. The conflicts primarily arise due to failure of a task in workflow execution because of underlying application, or controlling WfMS component failures or insufficient user input. So far, little progress has been reported in addressing conflict resolution in cross-organizational business processes, though its importance has been recognized. In this paper, we identify the exception handling techniques that support conflict resolution in cross-organizational settings. In particular, we propose a novel, …

An Analysis Of Psychopathy Characteristics In A Non-Incarcerated Population, Ebony D. Hunter May 2003

An Analysis Of Psychopathy Characteristics In A Non-Incarcerated Population, Ebony D. Hunter

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Psychopathy has received increased recognition as a critical clinical construct for evaluation and management of troubled individuals. To date, clinical research has examined psychopathy simply as a global construct rather than focusing on its specific criteria. In addition, researchers have tended to utilize downward extensions of adult, incarcerated conceptualization to understand general populations. Research pertaining to non-incarcerated diverse populations is scarce. This study is designed to assist in evaluation of personality traits related to psychopathy in a general, non-institutionalized population showing that there are selective psychopath characteristics present in non-incarcerated population.

Strivers And Underachievers: Effects On First Year College Grades And Retention, Heather M. O'Neill May 2003

Strivers And Underachievers: Effects On First Year College Grades And Retention, Heather M. O'Neill

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

In 1999, the Educational Testing Service created a Strivers Index where students who scored 200 points higher than expected on the SAT exam, based on their socioeconomic background, were called Strivers. Similarly, an Underachiever is a student who scores 200 below expected on the SAT. The presumption is that tagging a student as Striver or Underachiever will assist admissions offices in selecting the students. How Strivers and Underachievers perform in their first year academically and their college persistence patterns are examined in this paper.
