Pension Wealth And Household Saving: Evidence From Pension Reforms In The United Kingdom, Orazio Attanasio, Susann Rohwedder
Pension Wealth And Household Saving: Evidence From Pension Reforms In The United Kingdom, Orazio Attanasio, Susann Rohwedder
Susann Rohwedder
Using three major U.K. pension reforms as natural experiments we investigate the relationship between pension saving and discretionary private savings. Unlike most differences-in-differences approaches which rely on average differences between control and treatment group, we use economic theory to model the response of each individual household. The empirical analysis, based on the Family Expenditure Survey, uses both time-series and cross sectional variation to identify the behavioral response. The earnings-related tier of the pension scheme is found to have a negative impact on private savings with relatively high substitution elasticities; the impact of the flat-rate tier is not significantly different from …

Public-Private Partnership? Shifting Paradigms Of Economic Governance In Ontario, Neil Bradford
Public-Private Partnership? Shifting Paradigms Of Economic Governance In Ontario, Neil Bradford
Neil Bradford
In recent years, many governments have embraced new modes of economic governance that rely on public-private partnerships. These forms of governance effectively devolve authority and responsibility from the state, and instead rely on the policy networks found in civil society. This article argues that despite the general enthusiasm for such decentralized collaboration, there is significant variation in its meaning and practice. Comparing the public-private partnership strategies of two governments in Ontario in the 1990s, the article analyzes the origins and progress of two distinctive governance paradigms, looking for signs of economic innovation. The case studies demonstrate that each of the …

The Political And Social Activities Of Mainline Protestant Clergy In The Election Of 2000:, Corwin |Smidt, Sue Crawford, Laura Olson, Melissa Deckman, Donald Gray, Dan Hofrenning, Sherrie Steiner, Beau Weston
Sherrie M Steiner
This study examines clergy across six mainline Protestant denominations in terms of their social characteristics, their theological positions, and their political attitudes and behavior. The analysis is based on data collected through random surveys of clergy in each denomination conducted in 2001 using the same instrument. The predominant focus of the article is on the nature and level of political activities exhibited by mainline Protestant clergy in the election year of 2000. The analysis revealed that mainline Protestant clergy are indeed relatively active politically, but that, despite their commonality of belonging to the same broad religious tradition, the nature and …

Hunting And Gathering On The Information Savanna: Conversations On Modeling Human Search Abilities, Brian O'Connor, Jud Copeland, Jodi Kearns
Jodi Kearns, PhD
Serves as the focal concept in a search for a truly functional document access system, enabling us to stand back from the present, to look into the shadows of our current designs, marvel at the breadth of human search capabilities, recognize frailties in both humans and systems, and ask new questions as we grapple with navigating our information environment.O'Connor and Copeland offer three different arenas of nontrivial information seeking for our consideration: "Submarine Chasing" explores the thoughts of a highly decorated Cold War submarine hunter. "Bounty Hunting" involves a long and convoluted search for a reported bond skipper. "Engineering Design" …

Fdr To Clinton, Mueller To ?: A Field Essay On Presidential Approval, Brian Newman, Paul Gronke
Fdr To Clinton, Mueller To ?: A Field Essay On Presidential Approval, Brian Newman, Paul Gronke
Brian Newman
Since the 1930s, polling organizations have asked Americans whether they "approve or disapprove of the job [the incumbent] is doing as president." In the early 1970s, John Mueller started an academic industry by asking what drives these evaluations. American politics and the tools available to examine it have changed dramatically since then, inspiring a burst of research on presidential approval in the 1990s. We review this new body of literature, arguing that it builds on but differs importantly from earlier approval studies. Since Mueller's writing, scholars have expanded his relatively simple model, taking account of presidents' goals and personal characteristics, …

Consumer Willingness To Pay For Genetically Modified Food Labels In A Market With Diverse Information: Evidence From Experimental Auctions, W E. Huffman, J F. Shogren, M Rousu, A Tegene
Consumer Willingness To Pay For Genetically Modified Food Labels In A Market With Diverse Information: Evidence From Experimental Auctions, W E. Huffman, J F. Shogren, M Rousu, A Tegene
Jason Shogren
With the continuing controversy over genetically modified (GM) foods, some groups advocate mandatory labeling of these products, while other groups oppose labeling. An important issue is how GM labels affect consumers' willingness to pay for these food products in the market. Using a statistically based economics experiment with adult consumers as subjects, we examine how willingness to pay changes for three food products-vegetable oil, tortilla chips, and potatoes-when GM labels are introduced. Participants in the experiments discounted GM-labeled foods by approximately 14% relative to their standard-labeled counterparts. The evidence also showed that sequencing of food labels affects willingness to pay, …

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.
BACKGROUND: Disturbed interpersonal relations and emotional dysregulation are fundamental aspects of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The amygdala plays important roles in modulating vigilance and generating negative emotional states and is often abnormally reactive in disorders of mood and emotion. The aim of this study was to assess amygdala reactivity in BPD patients relative to normal control subjects. We hypothesized that amygdala hyperreactivity contributes to hypervigilance, emotional dysregulation, and disturbed interpersonal relations in BPD.
METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined neural responses to 20-sec blocks of neutral, happy, sad, and fearful facial expression (or a fixation point) in 15 …

Was Japan’S Real Interest Rate Really Too High During The 1990s? The Role Of The Zero Interest Rate Bound And Other Factors, Hiro Ito
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Japan’s more than a decade long “Great Recession” has presented a disconcerting case of what could happen if interest rates are bounded by zero and deflation sets in. Since Krugman (1998), the commonplace observation is that the deflationary situation combined with the zero nominal interest rate has caused elevated real interest rates, thereby nullifying monetary policy. This paper investigates this oft -cited claim and examines whether it is associated with anomalies in the way real interest rates are determined by employing an error correction model (ECM) based on the time-varying parameter model with Markov-switching variances. Using this model it is …
Ams Radiocarbon Chronology Of Glacier Fluctuations In The South Shetland Islands During The Last Glacial/Interglacial Hemicycle:Implications For Global Climate Change, Brenda L. Hall
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
This award supports a two year program to produce a new reconstruction of ice extent, elevation and thickness at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) for the South Shetland Islands in the Antarctic Peninsula. One field season on Livingston Island will involve mapping the areal extent and geomorphology of glacial drift and determining the elevation and distribution of trimlines. In addition, ice flow direction will be determined by mapping and measuring the elevation of erosional features and the position of erratic boulders. One of the main goals of this work will be to demonstrate whether or not organic material suitable for …

Larger Issues At Stake In Unnatural Sex Debate, Seow Hon Tan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The recent debate about the criminal prohibition of oral sex provides an occasion for considering larger, related issues. However prevalent the practice of oral sex and however archaic Section 377 of the Penal Code seems to those pushing for its repeal, the arguments offered have tended to take a piecemeal approach and display an ignorance of or disregard for the larger interests at stake.

Mentor Relationships In Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training: A National Survey Of Directors Of Training, Steven C. Dickinson
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The purpose of the present study was to investigate mentoring from the perspective of training directors. This study expands on the work of Clark, Harden and Johnson (I 998) who surveyed psychology doctoral students' experience of mentoring. Mentoring is "a personal relationship in which a more experienced (usually older) individual acts as a guide, role model, teacher, and sponsor of a less experienced (usually younger) protege" (Levinson, 1978, 333-334). The present study assessed the prevalence, importance and qualities of mentoring as reported by directors of training from APA-accredited (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) psychology doctoral programs. Directors of training from 194 APA …
