The Evolution Of Party Systems Between Elections, Michael Laver, Kenneth Benoit Apr 2003

The Evolution Of Party Systems Between Elections, Michael Laver, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Most existing theoretical work on party competition pays little attention to the evolution of party systems between elections as a result of defections between parties. In this article, we treat individual legislators as utility-maximizing agents tempted to defect to other parties if this would increase their expected payoffs. We model the evolution of party systems between elections in these terms and discuss this analytically, exploring unanswered questions using computational methods. Under office-seeking motivational assumptions, our results strikingly highlight the role of the largest party, especially when it is “dominant” in the technical sense, as a pole of attraction in interelectoral …

A New Wprs Profiling Model For Michigan, Randall W. Eberts, Christopher J. O'Leary Apr 2003

A New Wprs Profiling Model For Michigan, Randall W. Eberts, Christopher J. O'Leary

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

The Worker Profiling and Reemployment Services (WPRS) system was established nationwide following the 1993 enactment of Public Law 103-152. The law requires state employment security agencies to profile new claimants for regular unemployment insurance (UI) benefits to identify those most likely to exhaust their regular benefits, and refer them to reemployment services to promote a faster transition to new employment. In November 1994, the Michigan Employment Security Commission (MESC) began profiling new UI claimants with technical assistance from the W. E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research Since WPRS profiling was introduced in Michigan much has changed, but the same model …

Beneath The Red Curtain: Intentions And Motivations Behind An Authoritarian Regime's Move Toward Democracy, Andrew G. Sur '03 Apr 2003

Beneath The Red Curtain: Intentions And Motivations Behind An Authoritarian Regime's Move Toward Democracy, Andrew G. Sur '03

Honors Projects

Although Mao Zedong stated that people's democracy was the surest way to maintain the Chinese Communist Party's popular base, the idea of implementing elections at the village level was unheard of during the Mao era. The post-Mao era, however, has brought monumental changes in China's political, economic, and social structures. These changes have increased rural instability among China's peasants who consist of nearly 75% of China's total population. Indeed some of the most profound changes and instructive lessons in China's contemporary history have come from the countryside.

Soft Money And The Electoral Success Of Women Candidates For The U.S. House Of Representatives, Cameo M. Kaisler '03 Apr 2003

Soft Money And The Electoral Success Of Women Candidates For The U.S. House Of Representatives, Cameo M. Kaisler '03

Honors Projects

Research has shown that when they run, women candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives are as successful as their male counterparts in fundraising for and winning their elections. However, female candidates continue to face numerous barriers to becoming candidates and winning their races. This analysis is an investigation of another potential barrier to the success of women candidates, the recent ban on soft money contributions to federal level campaigns. Following analysis of the sources and average totals of campaign financing for male and female, Democratic and Republican candidates in the 2000 and 2002 elections, it can be noted that …

The Truth About Income Inequality, Juliana Giraldo '03 Apr 2003

The Truth About Income Inequality, Juliana Giraldo '03

Honors Projects

Until recently, sustaining high economic growth was thought to be the ultimate goal of development. Unfortunately, economic growth does not necessarily imply an improvement in the standards of living of all of the country's citizens, due to the unequal distribution of income. Income inequality is a problem for both developing and developed nations across the globe, but it is most evident in the great metropolises of the developing world. Much research has been done to determine the true relationship between growth and income inequality and recently, emphasis has shifted to ascertaining exactly what social and economic determinants affect the level …

The Effect Of Supply And Demand Factors On The Affordability Of Rental Housing, Jamie L. Davenport '03 Apr 2003

The Effect Of Supply And Demand Factors On The Affordability Of Rental Housing, Jamie L. Davenport '03

Honors Projects

The difficulty of acquiring affordable rental units remains the most significant concern for low-income households. Despite the strong economic growth of the 1990s, one-third of all households spend more than the recommended thirty percent of their incomes on rental costs. These cost-burdened households face diminishing affordable rental units due to gentrification, rental rates increasing faster than real incomes, and the expiration of government subsidized rental units. The rental market is the focus of this paper since low-income households face the greatest barriers to acquiring affordable housing. This paper uses an empirical analysis of the supply and demand factors affecting affordability …

The Labor Market Of Nurses: A Cobweb Model, Nimish J. Adhia '03 Apr 2003

The Labor Market Of Nurses: A Cobweb Model, Nimish J. Adhia '03

Honors Projects

The labor market of nurses has been plagued by reports of persistent shortages, which raise concerns about the quality of health care. The formulation of appropriate policy intervention requires knowledge of the factors shifting the demand and supply of nurses. This paper develops a model of the nursing labor market, in which the demand and supply curves are identified from the observed employment and wages using econometric techniques. It is found that the short term wage elasticity of supply is not significantly different from zero, and hence the employment trends in the nursing labor market follow a cobweb pattern, where …

Social Agency And Dieffenderfer Ware: A Multiscalar Analysis Investigating Current Archaeological Perspectives Concerning Style, Social Dynamics, Chaine Operatoire And Practice Theory, Timothy L. Bober Apr 2003

Social Agency And Dieffenderfer Ware: A Multiscalar Analysis Investigating Current Archaeological Perspectives Concerning Style, Social Dynamics, Chaine Operatoire And Practice Theory, Timothy L. Bober

Masters Theses

Dieffenderfer Ware is a recently defined ceramic type found exclusively at the Dieffenderfer site (20SJ179) in southwest Michigan. This Late Woodland (ca. A.D. 1000-1400) pottery exhibits Iroquoian traits which are atypical in this region, but beyond that, very little is known about this ceramic type and the people that produced it. Research assessing the social agency of the producers of Dieffenderfer Ware was carried out by employing the chaine operatoire model, which examines the life history of artifacts. Dieffenderfer Ware was compared to the locally produced Allegan Ware. Social groups will procure, construct, use, and discard ceramics differently. Significant differences …

Style, Ethnicity, Technology, And Practice: Analysis Of A Material Culture Assemblage From The Paleoindian-Archaic Cultural Transition In The Northwestern Great Lakes, Matthew R. Laidler Apr 2003

Style, Ethnicity, Technology, And Practice: Analysis Of A Material Culture Assemblage From The Paleoindian-Archaic Cultural Transition In The Northwestern Great Lakes, Matthew R. Laidler

Masters Theses

This study examines issues concerning the theoretical basis of style and ethnicity in archaeology through analysis of a material culture (lithic) assemblage from the Late Paleoindian-Archaic cultural transition period In the Northwestern Great Lakes region of the United States. A theoretical framework utilizing practice theory as expounded by Pierre Bourdieu is applied to an interpretation of both the theoretical and concrete issues involved in this analysis. Using the context of an interpreted ritual/mortuary site, a social archaeology concerned with the social, political, and organizational context of production, use, and deposition of technological objects is developed to address style and ethnicity …

Shoreline Perceptions And Planning Of Five Lakes In Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Jonathan Peter Marsch Apr 2003

Shoreline Perceptions And Planning Of Five Lakes In Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Jonathan Peter Marsch

Masters Theses

Lakeshore development can have adverse affects on inland lakes. Effective planning and control is necessary to help communities and lakes stay healthy in the future. This paper provides planning for five lakes in Kalamazoo County, Michigan through the examination of lakeshore residents' perceptions of lake issues and the zoning ordinances of their local jurisdictions. Shoreline residents and jurisdictions around Austin, Gull, Long, West, and Woods Lakes are targeted in the survey and ordinance reviews. Evaluation of the survey through various statistical tests provides insight on residents' views of their rationale for living on the lakes, identification of lakeshore problems, and …

Crimes On College Campuses, Angela M. Turner

Masters Theses

A college or university is not a place where crime is expected. Crime was not recognized as a discrete campus problem until recently. Information on this topic is limited and difficult to obtain. The purpose of my research is to measure the amount of crime on the campus of Western Michigan University (WMU). My research is focused on the crimes of rape, sexual assault and theft. The victims I study are students and resident hall assistants. My research method includes a self-report survey from a sample of 300 students and resident hall assistants enrolled at WMU.

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Gull Lake Water Quality Summer Of 1998, Jill Downing Apr 2003

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Gull Lake Water Quality Summer Of 1998, Jill Downing

Masters Theses

Suspended sediments derived from surface runoff can cause deterioration in aquatic ecosystems by reducing sunlight penetrating through suspended solids to reach subsurface biological organisms. It can also have an adverse effect on recreational, agricultural, and industrial uses. Monitoring the spatial distribution of suspended sediments is important in resource management of surface waters. Field spectrometry has been applied successfully toward establishing relationships between spectral response and water quality parameters including suspended sediment concentrations. The objective of this research was to develop possible correlations between hyperspectrum and water quality attributes of depth, turbidity, and nutrients of an inland freshwater lake in southwest …

Soil Survey Enhancement Of Landsat Thematic Mapper Delineation Of Wetlands: A Case Study Of Barry County, Michigan, Rosemary Ann Anger Apr 2003

Soil Survey Enhancement Of Landsat Thematic Mapper Delineation Of Wetlands: A Case Study Of Barry County, Michigan, Rosemary Ann Anger

Masters Theses

The Landsat Thematic Mapper Satellite system has provided a unique platform for the study of natural and man-made features since 1972. This suite of sensors has become an important tool in assessing vegetation type and health over large areas of the earth. This paper reviews the Landsat Thematic Mapper’s ability to categorize wetlands using an unsupervised classification scheme. A preliminary exploration of an unsupervised classification of wetlands using soil engineering characteristics from the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s soil survey as a pseudo bandwidth is described. The result of this project suggests that when compared to the National Wetlands Inventory, a …

The Enemy Within Islam, Laina Farhat-Holzman Apr 2003

The Enemy Within Islam, Laina Farhat-Holzman

Comparative Civilizations Review

The recent spread of political, radical Islam around the world has captured the attention of the secular world. This movement has launched a spate of violence and unrest, culminating in the al-Qaeda attack on the United States on September 11, 2001. Public interest in Islam has not been so keen since the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979—another event that took the world by surprise. Political observers have pinpointed the Saudis as the source of the problem. Not only were the majority of the terrorist bombers Saudi, but also they were thoroughly indoctrinated into the severe Muslim Wahhabi sect that …

U.S. Coins: Forecasting Change, Dean D. Croushore

Economics Faculty Publications

Although the government annually produces about 70 new coins for every man, woman, and child, the economy’s need for coins can vary from year to year. So how do the U.S. Mint, which makes the coins, and the Federal Reserve, which distributes them, decide how many coins the economy needs? Dean Croushore highlights some facts about coins and describes how demand for change is forecast.

The Minex Center, Minex Minex

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Since 1978, in the scope of cooperation or defense agreements that link us to some countries (e.g., Chad and Lebanon), the French Engineers have taken part in overseas operations in countries that are greatly affected by the problem of mines and battlefield pollution, and that are no longer at war. Those sappers will acquire an experience recognized worldwide.

In 1992, in order to standardise mine clearance techniques and to elaborate an acceptable training doctrine for all the military actors, the Joint Chiefs of Staff decided to create a training center for post-war mine clearance within the French Army Engineer School …
