Stable But Variable Characterizes Nebraska Agricultural Land Values, Glenn A. Helmers, Bruce B. Johnson
Stable But Variable Characterizes Nebraska Agricultural Land Values, Glenn A. Helmers, Bruce B. Johnson
Cornhusker Economics
The results of UNL's 2003 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey indicate a slight decline in overall land values compared to 2002 (-.4 percent). However, variability within the state and among land types indicates more complexity and less uniformity in changes than in previous years. In the past 16 years overall land values declined only twice (1999 and 2003). Thus, the slight decline in 2003 values is not strong evidence of a leveling off in the generally increasing trend in land values, yet large declines of land values in some areas raise concern over what economic forces are at work.

Interview No. 1142, Gregorio Trejo
Interview No. 1142, Gregorio Trejo
Combined Interviews
Mr. Trejo very briefly recalls his childhood; when he was nine years old, he and his family moved to Plateros, Zacatecas, México; from there they moved to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, before returning to Zacatecas; because one of the recruiting and contracting centers was in Zacatecas, Zacatecas, he was aware of the Bracero Program; he recalls that the governor of Zacatecas did not want workers from the cities of Fresnillo or Plateros to be hired as braceros because there was plenty of work for them to stay and do in the mines; in spite of this, he managed to have his …

The Importance Of Mass Culture For Democratization, James D. Melton '03
The Importance Of Mass Culture For Democratization, James D. Melton '03
Honors Projects
In the last thirty years, the importance of political culture in political science has risen, declined, and has risen again. Although the theories of political culture have been strengthened and refined in this process, modern culture theorists have yet to empirically demonstrate culture's ability to be used as an independent variable or to make causal claims using culture. This paper makes an attempt to solve these empirical deficiencies in cultural theory by setting up what Brian Barry calls a "critical test." Using the former USSR and the post-communist countries in Eastern Europe, I will test two hypotheses. First, mass values …

Religion & Ethnic Identity Among Mexican Youths In Homestead, Florida, Noemi Baez
Religion & Ethnic Identity Among Mexican Youths In Homestead, Florida, Noemi Baez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Immigrant youth are the fastest growing component of the U.S. population and Mexicans are the largest immigrant group in the U.S. The manner in which they integrate into U.S. society and the ways that they become civically engaged, will greatly determine the nature of civil society in the United States over the next few decades. Moreover, religion is increasingly recognized as an important factor in immigrant adaptation. Based upon fieldwork of participant observation and interviews in Homestead, Florida, this thesis examined the relationship among Mexican youths' identity, religion and civic engagement. I found that if these youths are active in …

Teaching Medical Informatics Online, Daniel G. Kipnis, Anthony J. Frisby
Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations
At Thomas Jefferson University, Academic Information Services and Research (AISR), has designed a required online Medical Informatics course for 230 first year medical students. The course is designed to demonstrate the need for lifelong-learning skills, to train students in how to ask the appropriate questions to find an answer to their information needs, and to instill an awareness of the various types of information sources available to them and the skills to use these resources.
The entire medical informatics course is completed online. Each student must complete a computing survey, a pre-test, two case studies, and a post-test. A common …
