Memory-Based Tone Recognition Of Cantonese Syllables, Michael William Emonts
Theses and Dissertations
Speech recognition has only recently been applied to Cantonese. Considerable effort, however, has been spent in recognizing Mandarin, the standard dialect of Chinese. Prior to this thesis, the only published work on monosyllabic Cantonese tone recognition is from Tan Lee et al. (1993,1995). This thesis is the first of its kind in that it explores memory-based learning as a viable approach for Cantonese tone recognition. The memory-based learning algorithm employed in this thesis outperforms the highly respected and widely used neural network approach. Various numbers of tones and features are modeled to find the best method for feature selection and …

The Anchor: 2003
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Mr. Fierro recounts his childhood and the difficulties he and his family faced; he describes the various stages of the hiring process, including the contracting center in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, México, and the medical examinations he underwent at Rio Vista, a processing center in Socorro, Texas; as a bracero, his work included the following: picking and irrigating cotton crops, picking peas, harvesting lettuce, pulling sugar beets, and cleaning the fields in which they grew; he explains the different wages he received for the various jobs he performed and what he did when his contracts expired; in addition he recounts his experiences …

In February 2003 the University of Nebraska Press announced a new series of books—The Comprehensive History of the Holocaust—to be co-published with Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem. Economic reforms in rural development are of special significance to the future of agriculture in China and hence the Chinese economy. This paper follows the trend of changes in agricultural institutions in China, and explains the reasons why those reforms should occur and the direction they would give the Chinese economy. Unlike many articles which have described China's reforms as a process of the government's self-selection, this paper considers the variety of forces pushing Chinese reforms in agriculture forward; not only government's policies but also farmers' reactions to and their interactions with farm policy.
