Taxing Sunny Days: Adjusting Taxes For Regional Living Costs And Amenities, Michael S. Knoll, Thomas D. Griffith Feb 2003

Taxing Sunny Days: Adjusting Taxes For Regional Living Costs And Amenities, Michael S. Knoll, Thomas D. Griffith

All Faculty Scholarship

Taxpayers pay tax on their nominal income without regard to their regional cost of living or the value of their regional amenities. Although commentators have argued that the income tax's failure to account for such differences is unfair - because residents of high-cost and low-amenity regions pay higher taxes than residents of low-cost and high-amenity regions - that argument is unpersuasive because migration tends to eliminate regional differences in living standards. The tax system's failure to adjust for regional differences is, however, likely to misallocate resources across regions in two ways. First, it is likely to discourage taxpayers from settling …

Measuring Personality And Values Across Cultures: Imported Versus Indigenous Measures, Fanny M. Cheung, Shu Fai Cheung Feb 2003

Measuring Personality And Values Across Cultures: Imported Versus Indigenous Measures, Fanny M. Cheung, Shu Fai Cheung

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Cross-cultural studies of personality have shown cultural similarities and differences in the manifestation of personality traits. In interpreting cultural differences in personality traits, we should consider not only the experiences of people in different cultures, but also the measures adopted and the cultural orientations of researchers themselves. In this chapter, we discuss the considerations in adapting an instrument from one culture to another culture. We illustrate the alternative approach of developing an indigenous personality measure in the Chinese culture.

Reflections On Two Decades, Carol Tenopir Feb 2003

Reflections On Two Decades, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

In 1983, the hottest issue was the entry of the end user. Throughout the previous decade, expert searchers were the only ones with their hands on the keyboard. The widespread acceptance of the personal computer in the early 1980s spurred new expectations. End user versions of major intermediary systems heralded the beginning of the end user revolution. By 1993, end users were accomplished searchers but most likely on CD-ROM versions of databases.

Question Negotiation And The Technological Environment, Joseph Janes, Joanne Silverstein Feb 2003

Question Negotiation And The Technological Environment, Joseph Janes, Joanne Silverstein

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The information world is a very different place in 2003 than it was a few years ago. It is possible, for example, to find information more quickly and easily than ever before, using new tools, and drawing on sources of information unavailable or even nonexistent not so very long ago. People seeking answers or providing them now have many more options for "question negotiation", in the broadest Tayloresque sense [1]. Consulting an information professional continues to be one of those options. In fact, such professionals can now be much more accessible via these new tools and technologies.

Geographic Information System Methodologies To Evaluate Relationships Between Land Use And Groundwater Quality In South Central Kentucky, Rhonda Pfaff Feb 2003

Geographic Information System Methodologies To Evaluate Relationships Between Land Use And Groundwater Quality In South Central Kentucky, Rhonda Pfaff

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The development of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology has provided techniques for a holistic approach to the study of karst groundwater contamination. While karst groundwaters supply water to a large percentage of the earth's population, its complex environments often have lacked the scientific examination and conservation measures typical of non-karst regions. In this study, GIS methodologies were explored to examine the relationships between land-use and water quality in karst watersheds. Eight watersheds throughout southern and western Kentucky were examined. The study areas included the Mammoth Cave Karst Aquifer, which is the watershed that drains the Mammoth Cave System, and seven …

The Lion And The Lamb: Demythologizing Franklin Roosevelt's Fireside Chats, Elvin T. Lim Feb 2003

The Lion And The Lamb: Demythologizing Franklin Roosevelt's Fireside Chats, Elvin T. Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We are accustomed to a characterization of Franklin Roosevelt’s legendary Fireside Chats as intimate exchanges between the president and the people. This essay argues that the Fireside Chats were a harsher, more castigatory rhetorical genre than such a characterization would allow. A content analysis of the 27 Fireside Chats recorded in FDR’s Public Papers suggests that the Fireside Chats were, on a number of indices, far less intimate than have traditionally been supposed, and in fact among the more vitriolic and declamatory utterances of the 32nd president. The essay proceeds with a discussion of how this illusion of intimacy was …

The "Marginalized Violent Internal Conflict" (Mvic) Model And The Ogoni Conflict In The Niger Delta Of Nigeria, John Osayere Agbonifo

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The Ogoni people, and later other ethnic minority groups m the Niger Delta, embarked on violent resistance against environmental pollution and degradation occasioned by the unclean energy operations of oil transnational corporations, notably Shell, in the 1990s. Several explanations have been adduced for the outbreak of hostilities and the motives of the insurrectional I eaders. Little, however, has been done in terms of efforts geared at understanding the nature of the conflict through the application of conflict models and typologies and the comparative study of the Niger Delta conflicts with the contentious politics of other aggrieved and marginalized peoples e …
