The Transformation Of The Greek Party System Since 1951, Takis S. Pappas

Takis S Pappas

This study is about party-system change in modern Greece and has two chief aims. First, it seeks to make sense of and explain the evolution of that country’s party system from its early post-war years until today. Far from being ‘frozen’, the Greek party system has displayed continuous transformations from a system featuring significant party fragmentation into another characterised by the high concentration of its political forces. Second, the paper proposes a classification of the changes that took place during the development of the Greek party system. This classification will yield three distinct types of party system which developed in …

Evolution Of Credit Union Philosophy, Matthew Wilburn King Jan 2003

Evolution Of Credit Union Philosophy, Matthew Wilburn King

Matthew Wilburn King PhD

This paper explores the history and evolution of credit union philosophy. The evolution of credit union philosophy spans nearly 150 years. It’s a story that begins in the middle of 19th century Europe as it was emerging from a long history of feudal relations and tyrannical rule that created “the miserable economic conditions of the period and the realization that people would have to take action themselves if their lives were to improve.”1 The democratic ideals that were so eloquently articulated by classical liberal philosophers such as John Locke and Thomas Hobbes began to be increasingly institutionalized during this time.

Criterios De Calidad En La Investigación Social: La Producción De Datos Sociales, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

The Eu Experience In Financial Services Liberalization: A Model For Gats Negotiations?, Paola Agnese Bongini Jan 2003

The Eu Experience In Financial Services Liberalization: A Model For Gats Negotiations?, Paola Agnese Bongini

Paola Bongini

The investigation of the sequencing of liberalization in the EU financial services industry is the primary object of this study. The relevance of the EU model for financial liberalization is threefold. First, the EU route towards liberalization in financial services could be regarded as a blueprint for opening up markets worldwide, especially in the context of multilateral liberalization within the WTO framework. Second, the EU model calls for an investigation of the degree of compatibility between regional agreements and multilateral commitments. Third, the EU regional experience raises the question of the extent to which it can be transferred in different …

Taxes And Location Of Foreign Direct Investments: An Empirical Analysys For The European Union Countries, Roberta De Santis, Maria Cristina Mercuri, Claudio Vicarelli Jan 2003

Taxes And Location Of Foreign Direct Investments: An Empirical Analysys For The European Union Countries, Roberta De Santis, Maria Cristina Mercuri, Claudio Vicarelli

Claudio Vicarelli

This paper aims at verifying the impact of fiscal variables in the multinational firms' localisation choices within the European Union Member States. In particular, the sensitivity of bilateral foreign direct investments towards EU member countries to the receiving country's fiscal characteristics is tested. Among fiscal variables, the empirical analysis shows that FDI inflows in the European Union countries are influenced by the total fiscal wedge on labour more than the corporate tax rate. This suggests that Multinationals, while making their localisation choices, focus their attention on the overall tax and contribution burden more than on single corporate tax rates, which …

Physician-Patient Interaction: A Gynecology Clinic In Turkey, Ayse K. Uskul, Farah Ahmad Jan 2003

Physician-Patient Interaction: A Gynecology Clinic In Turkey, Ayse K. Uskul, Farah Ahmad

Ayse K Uskul

Evidence for gender differences in physicians’ communication with their patients comes primarily from Western countries. Little is known about whether these gender differences would also be observed in Turkey, where there are explicit rules about male-female conduct. The purpose of this study was to observe male and female gynecologists’ communication with their patients in a gynecology clinic at a state hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. Four male and three female gynecologists were observed in their interaction with 70 patients over 10 days. The observations were conducted during both the history taking and the actual examination sessions by a woman researcher. The …

Report Of The Metadata Access To Digital Collections Task Force, Ardis Hanson, Ilene Frank, Charles Gordon, Susan Heron, Linda Mcrae, Jim Michael, Tom Miller, Pete Reehling, Sue Vastine, Walter Rowe

Ardis Hanson

The charge of this Task Force evolved from an assignment to “work with the Head of Cataloging to develop a plan to strengthen the output of metadata needed for digital and electronic collections." This assignment grew out of a concern by Derrie Perez, Interim Dean of the USF Library System, that there was increased fragmentation of the USF Libraries collections, with electronic and digital collections accessed by means other than the online catalog. This report examines the USF Libraries Digital Collections from its foundation, its overall strategy, and structure of the current system. This model will allow a fuller picture …

A Utilitarian Welfare Analysis Of Trade Liberalization, Robert C. Shelburne Jan 2003

A Utilitarian Welfare Analysis Of Trade Liberalization, Robert C. Shelburne

Robert C. Shelburne

This paper provides a welfare analysis of trade liberalization based upon the moral principles of utilitarianism. The history of the moral philosophy of utilitarianism is described including its introduction into what became known as Cambridge welfare economics. The differences between this school of thought and what would later develop as modern welfare analysis are discussed. Essentially, the Cambridge economists were not particularly disturbed by the assumptions of cardinal utility and interpersonal comparisons and argued that these assumptions added more than they took away. Next the mathematical form of a utilitarian utility and social welfare function are described and the values …
