Sphericules And Fragments: Minding The Gaps, Ted M. Coopman Jan 2003

Sphericules And Fragments: Minding The Gaps, Ted M. Coopman

Faculty Publications

Michael McGee exemplified the scholar embracing all tools and ideas, the fragments that make up our existence, in exploring and explaining our world. I argue that bridging the gaps that separate these fragments, or what Gitlin (1989) called sphericules, is the essence of what constitutes public scholarship. Starting from Habermas' (1989) description of the public sphere I explore how interdisciplinarity holds the keys to bridging the gaps between publics. I supported this with a discussion of the history of academe in America and the brief survey of the new infrastructures being built to expand our fields of exploration and the …

Judging Distance Across Texture Discontinuities, Cary S. Feria, M. L. Braunstein, G. J. Andersen Jan 2003

Judging Distance Across Texture Discontinuities, Cary S. Feria, M. L. Braunstein, G. J. Andersen

Faculty Publications

Sinai et al (1998 Nature 395 497 - 500) showed that less distance is perceived along a ground surface that spans two differently textured regions than along a surface that is uniformly textured. We examined the effect of texture continuity on judged distance using computer-generated displays of simulated surfaces in five experiments. Discontinuities were produced by using different textures, the same texture reversed in contrast, or the same texture shifted horizontally. The simulated surface was either a ground plane or a frontoparallel plane. For all textures and both orientations, less distance was judged in the discontinuous conditions than in continuous …

Chicken Little, Three Blind Men And An Elephant, And “Racial Profiling”: A Commentary On The Collection, Analysis, And Interpretation Of Traffic Stop Data, Angela D. Crews Jan 2003

Chicken Little, Three Blind Men And An Elephant, And “Racial Profiling”: A Commentary On The Collection, Analysis, And Interpretation Of Traffic Stop Data, Angela D. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

This paper discusses the collection, analysis, and interpretation of police traffic stop data. The focus primarily is on the theoretical, statistical, and practical determination of whether law enforcement is engaging in “racial profiling.” One of the most controversial components of research in this area relates to the “baseline” or comparison group. Researchers struggle with determining whether agencies are engaging in “racial profiling” when making traffic stops without some measure of what the world would look like in the absence of “racial profiling.” We know what is, but how can we know what should be? A model is proposed that …

The Interactive Work Of Prosody In The Irf Exchange: Teacher Repetition In Feedback Moves, John Hellermann Jan 2003

The Interactive Work Of Prosody In The Irf Exchange: Teacher Repetition In Feedback Moves, John Hellermann

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines the interactive import of prosody from a perspective of participants' orientation to talk in interaction, taking advantage of data from institutional discourse to focus on the prosodic packaging of recurring turn sequences of the same discourse activity. The analysis focuses on the third slot of a ubiquitous three-part classroom discourse sequence, the IRF exchange (Sinclair & Coulthard 1975), a site in which teachers make repetitive feedback moves following student responses. Examination of more than 25 hours of classroom discourse and more than 300 third-turn teacher feedback types uncovered a systematic use of prosody for these teacher repetitions …

Fergie's Prescience: The Changing Nature Of Diglossia In Tunisia, Keith Walters Jan 2003

Fergie's Prescience: The Changing Nature Of Diglossia In Tunisia, Keith Walters

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite criticisms it has received, Ferguson's (1959b) account of diglossia should be recognized for its prescience. It offered not only an admittedly idealized characterization of diglossia in Arabic, but also pointed out how and why it might change. Focusing on Tunisia, this article demonstrates the many ways in which Fergie was right. It examines the changing demographics of Tunisians' access to the high variety of Arabic; the complex ways in which Tunisians, and Arabs more generally, deal with the "communicative tensions" diglossia creates; and considers the changing nature of Arabic in what is, in many ways, a postdiglossic Tunisia.
