Effect Of Deformation Schedule On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of A Thermomechanically Processed C-Mn-Si Transformation-Induced Plasticity Steel, I B. Timokhina, P D. Hodgson, E V. Pereloma Jan 2003

Effect Of Deformation Schedule On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of A Thermomechanically Processed C-Mn-Si Transformation-Induced Plasticity Steel, I B. Timokhina, P D. Hodgson, E V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Thermomechanical processing simulations were performed using a hot-torsion machine, in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the effect of severe deformation in the recrystallized and nonrecrystallized austenite regions on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the 0.2 wt pct C-1.55 wt pct Mn-1.5 wt pct Si transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steel. The deformation schedule affected all constituents (polygonal ferrite, bainite in different morphologies, retained austenite, and martensite) of the multiphased TRIP steel microstructure. The complex relationships between the volume fraction of the retained austenite, the morphology and distribution of all phases present in the microstructure, and the mechanical properties …

Intersection Type Systems And Logics Related To The Meyer-Routley System B+, Martin W. Bunder Jan 2003

Intersection Type Systems And Logics Related To The Meyer-Routley System B+, Martin W. Bunder

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Some, but not all, closed terms of the lambda calculus have types; these types are exactly the theorems of intuitionistic implicational logic. An extension of these simple (→) types to intersection (or →∧) types allows all closed lambda terms to have types. The corresponding →∧ logic, related to the Meyer–Routley minimal logic B+ (without ∨), is weaker than the →∧ fragment of intuitionistic logic. In this paper we provide an introduction to the above work and also determine the →∧ logics that correspond to certain interesting subsystems of the full →∧ type theory.

Revised Age For Mojokerto 1, An Early Homo Erectus Cranium From East Java, Indonesia, Michael Morwood, P O'Sullivan, E E. Susanto, F Aziz Jan 2003

Revised Age For Mojokerto 1, An Early Homo Erectus Cranium From East Java, Indonesia, Michael Morwood, P O'Sullivan, E E. Susanto, F Aziz

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Dates of around 1.8 Ma have been claimed for a hominin cranial vault excavated near Mojokerto City in East Java, Indonesia. Such an early date for presumed Homo erectus in East Asia would require a major revision of the general model for timing of initial hominin dispersal 'Out of Africa'. Instead, our field study and redating of two pumice horizons at the site indicate that the age of the Mojokerto cranial vault is less than 1.49 Ma. Furthermore, we argue that a basic understanding of site and regional depositional processes is fundamental for assessing the significance of any radiometric date.

Regional Development Politics Along Australia's Eastern Seaboard, Phillip O'Neill, Pauline M. Mcguirk Jan 2003

Regional Development Politics Along Australia's Eastern Seaboard, Phillip O'Neill, Pauline M. Mcguirk

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Despite its enduring nature, there is remarkably little published analysis about Australia's period of contemporary prosperity. It is clear that the post -war Keynesian-Fordist foundations for accumulation in Australia have been displaced. Prima facie evidence suggests that this displacement centres on econormc advantage within the nation's finance, property and business services sectors. Evidence also suggests that a new territorial configurations of Australia's urban and regional economies has accompanied this sectoral shift and, in turn, new spatial distributional flows have been generated. The paper examines whether a new urban-centric economic configuration has emerged. Economic reterritorialisations in Australia have necessarily produced new …

The Effects Of Frequency And Predictability On Eye Fixations In Reading: An Evaluation Of The E-Z Reader Model, Laurent Sparrow, Sebastien R. Miellet, Yann Coello Jan 2003

The Effects Of Frequency And Predictability On Eye Fixations In Reading: An Evaluation Of The E-Z Reader Model, Laurent Sparrow, Sebastien R. Miellet, Yann Coello

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

We tested whether the E-Z Reader model can be generalised to the French language. The simulation showed that the model can account for the frequency effect. The predictability effect is moreover accurate for word skipping, but not for fixation times. We think that this model is psychologically plausible for certain aspects of reading and we have used it to evaluate the performance of dyslexic readers.

An Online Subject Delivered With Help From An "Absent Ceo", James Meek, Shirley Agostinho Jan 2003

An Online Subject Delivered With Help From An "Absent Ceo", James Meek, Shirley Agostinho

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

This paper examines recent modifications to a masters-level subject in the area of technology-based learning. It shows how a scenario built around a fictitious consultancy company was joined to a new content set. Particular attention is given to a structuring device aimed at strengthening motivation in the addition of an unseen Chief Executive Officer (CEO) character. This device, coupled with reconfiguration of the lecturer as a company adviser, has become a primary driver of subject activity. We explain the rationale for adopting our approach and describe how it was implemented. Preliminary reflections are considered and the paper concludes by outlining …

Effects Of Supplementation With Purified Red Clover (Trifolium Pratense) Isoflavones On Plasma Lipids And Insulin Resistance In Healthy Premenopausal Women, Sarah Blakesmith, Philippa Lyons-Wall, Caroline George, George Joannou, Peter Petocz, Samir Samman Jan 2003

Effects Of Supplementation With Purified Red Clover (Trifolium Pratense) Isoflavones On Plasma Lipids And Insulin Resistance In Healthy Premenopausal Women, Sarah Blakesmith, Philippa Lyons-Wall, Caroline George, George Joannou, Peter Petocz, Samir Samman

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Consumption of isoflavone-rich soyabean protein is reported to reduce total and LDL-cholesterol, but the specific components responsible are undetermined. In a previous crossover trial we showed that purified isoflavones, derived from red clover (Trifolium pratense), raised HDL3-cholesterol in premenopausal women; however, these findings were inconclusive due to period and carryover effects. In an attempt to overcome this problem, we utilised a parallel study designed to re-examine the effects of purified isoflavones on plasma lipoproteins and markers of insulin resistance in premenopausal women. Twenty-five healthy premenopausal women participated in a double-blind, randomised, parallel study. The treatment group …

Consumers' Sensory And Nutritional Perceptions Of Three Types Of Milk, A E M Bus, Anthony Worsley Jan 2003

Consumers' Sensory And Nutritional Perceptions Of Three Types Of Milk, A E M Bus, Anthony Worsley

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Objective: To identify consumer perceptions of whole milk, reduced-fat milk and soy milk, and to investigate demographic influences on perceptions and types of milk consumption.

Design and setting: Questionnaires covering nutritional and sensory perceptions of three types of milk.

Subjects: Three hundred and sixty-one randomly selected shoppers in Melbourne, Australia.

Results: Generally, respondents held positive perceptions about milk. Milk was considered as having good sensory properties, providing a good source of nutrients, and being a convenient and safe product. However, despite these findings, misperceptions and unawareness about the nutrient content of milk were prevalent. Negative perceptions were most common for …

Testing The Relationship Between Personality, Computer Self-Efficacy And Computer Anxiety, Shae-Leigh C. Vella, Peter Caputi, Rohan Jayasuriya Jan 2003

Testing The Relationship Between Personality, Computer Self-Efficacy And Computer Anxiety, Shae-Leigh C. Vella, Peter Caputi, Rohan Jayasuriya

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

This paper discusses research in progress that examines the relationship between personality, computer self- efficacy and computer anxiety. An extension of the model proposed by Thatcher and Perrewe (2002) is discussed. This extended model considers the role of personality in determining the antecedents of variables affecting computer anxiety and self-efficacy, and how in turn computer anxiety and computer self-efficacy influence task performance. The methodology for testing the model is also presented.

Instrumental And Expressive Violence: Motive For Women's Use Of Violence And Their Perception Of Their Partner's Use Of Violence, Lisa Claire Maisano Kennedy Jan 2003

Instrumental And Expressive Violence: Motive For Women's Use Of Violence And Their Perception Of Their Partner's Use Of Violence, Lisa Claire Maisano Kennedy

Theses Digitization Project

In this study, we characterized the motivation for violence as instrumental, expressive, and self-defense. We learned that women perceive their own motivation for violence differently than they perceive their partner's motivation for violence, a form of self-defense, fighting back, and protecting themselves from harm. In contrast, women reported that their partner's motivation for violence was instrumental to get one's way, assert dominance, gain power, or to intimidate one's partner.

Long-Term Effects Of 3,4- Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (Mdma) On Serotonergic And Dopaminergic Functioning, Jodi Lynn Kohutek Jan 2003

Long-Term Effects Of 3,4- Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (Mdma) On Serotonergic And Dopaminergic Functioning, Jodi Lynn Kohutek

Theses Digitization Project

Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) popularly known as "Ecstasy" continues to gain popularity as a recreational drug that has been shown to increase serotonin and dopamine levels. The present study has demonstrated that repeated exposure to MDMA produces long-term damage to serotonergic and dopaminergic neurons in various regions of the rat brain.

Looking Into Phrasal Verbs, David Immanuel Kovitz Jan 2003

Looking Into Phrasal Verbs, David Immanuel Kovitz

Theses Digitization Project

The phrasal verb is a unique type of verb phrase that consists of a main verb, usually of only one or two syllables, followed by a particle, that works as a single semantic unit. Such meaning, however, is characteristically expressed in idomatic terms, which poses a formidable problem for students of English as a second language. To be understood, this meaning must be figuratively interpreted as well as literally translated.

Nutrition Education For English Learning In The Prison Context, Jeanie Jinwee Kim Jan 2003

Nutrition Education For English Learning In The Prison Context, Jeanie Jinwee Kim

Theses Digitization Project

This project addresses the need for English as a second language nutrition instruction for patients in a forensic mental institution. It incorporates concepts of motivation, situated learning, prison education, English for specific purposes, and content-based instruction into a model which guides the design of a nutrition curriculum, consisting of five lesson plans about the Food Guide Pyramid.

The Effects Of Lesions To The Superior Colliculus And Ventromedial Thalamus On [Kappa]-Opioid-Mediated Locomotor Activity In The Preweanling Rat, Arturo Rubin Zavala Jan 2003

The Effects Of Lesions To The Superior Colliculus And Ventromedial Thalamus On [Kappa]-Opioid-Mediated Locomotor Activity In The Preweanling Rat, Arturo Rubin Zavala

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this thesis was to determine the neuronal circuitry mediating U50,488-induced locomotion in preweanling rats. To this end, preweanling rats received bilateral electrolytic lesions of the ventromedial thalamus or superior colliculus and, two days later, the same rats received a challenge injection of U50,488. It was predicted that bilateral lesions of the ventromedial thalamus or superior colliculus would attenuate the U50,488-induced locomotor activity of 18-day-old rats.

Regional Integration And Domestic Institutional Homogeneity: A Comparative Analysis Of Regional Integration In The Americas, Pacific Asia, And Western Europe, Yi Feng, Gaspare M. Genna Jan 2003

Regional Integration And Domestic Institutional Homogeneity: A Comparative Analysis Of Regional Integration In The Americas, Pacific Asia, And Western Europe, Yi Feng, Gaspare M. Genna

Gaspare M Genna

This work argues that the formation of an economic union requires that the homogeneity of domestic economic institutions and the process of regional integration reinforce each other. Granger causality tests on four cases of regional integration in the Americas, Asia and Europe(1975 through 1995)confirm our thesis. These cases include the Andean Pact, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Central American Common Market and the European Union. The most successful case of integration - the European Union - does evince a pattern of positive interaction between the two variables, while less successful cases, found in Latin America, are lacking in this …

Three Factors Of The Comprehensive System For The Rorschach And Their Relationship To Wechsler Iq Scores In An Adolescent Sample, James M. Wood, Radhika Krishnamurthy, Robert P. Archer Jan 2003

Three Factors Of The Comprehensive System For The Rorschach And Their Relationship To Wechsler Iq Scores In An Adolescent Sample, James M. Wood, Radhika Krishnamurthy, Robert P. Archer

James M. Wood

Principal axis factor analyses of the Rorschach Comprehensive System in a clinical sample of 152 adolescents yielded three clearly defined factors: Synthesized Complexity (defined by Zf, DQ+, and F%), Productivity (defined by R, D, and Dd), and Form Quality (defined by X+%, F+%, and X-%). Variables on the Synthesized Complexity and Form Quality factors were generally correlated with Wechsler Full Scale IQ, Verbal IQ, and Performance IQ scores. Overall, the factors in this adolescent sample replicated factors identified in earlier studies with adults. Implications for clinical practice are discussed.

Why Did They Emigrate? An Examination Of Five Danish Farming Periodicals During The Period From 1860 To 1900 To Determine What Motivated Farm Laborers To Emigrate., Jette Mackintosh Jan 2003

Why Did They Emigrate? An Examination Of Five Danish Farming Periodicals During The Period From 1860 To 1900 To Determine What Motivated Farm Laborers To Emigrate., Jette Mackintosh

The Bridge

One question in emigration research has always intrigued me: Why did Peter Jensen find conditions in Denmark so unbearable that he could stand them no longer or why was he so tempted by the prospects on the other side of the Atlantic that he emigrated, while his neighbor, Jens Petersen, who apparently had exactly the same conditions, stayed at home and put up with things? Unfortunately it can probably never be answered satisfactorily. It may be possible to find reasons for some of the emigrations in letters and diaries, but we have no basis for comparison in the form of …

For The Want Of Ten Dollars: The Development Of The Terra Cotta Industry In New Jersey, Thorvald Hansen Jan 2003

For The Want Of Ten Dollars: The Development Of The Terra Cotta Industry In New Jersey, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

When the Mathiasens, Karl and his father, left Thisted, on Denmark's northeast Jutland peninsula, for America in 1872, the intention of the elder Mathiasen was to go to Michigan where he had a sister living. When they arrived in New York the father totaled up the funds he had and discovered that the trip thus far had cost more than he expected. He lacked ten dollars of having enough to travel farther west. On the advice of a kindly Dane they walked the few miles to Perth Amboy, New Jersey where they were told they could probably find work. It …

Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen Jan 2003

Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen

The Bridge

On October 8, 1936, The Dannebrog News printed a special issue celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Dannebrog's incorporation as a town. The first Danish immigrants arrived in Howard County in 1871 and founded the settlement of Dannebrog the following year. But it would be another fourteen years before Dannebrog received official status and could establish its first town council. First appearing in 1898, the English-language The Dannebrog News became the longest persevering publication in the Dannebrog area. It was not the town's first, however, as two other newspapers preceded it. In the spring of 1874, an attorney by the name …
