Different Forms Of Abuse In The Eating Disorders: Impact On Schema-Level Cognitions, Christine C. Ganis
Different Forms Of Abuse In The Eating Disorders: Impact On Schema-Level Cognitions, Christine C. Ganis
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Cognitive theory suggests that traumatic experiences impact on psychopathology via the development of unconditional negative cognitions (core beliefs or schema). This study examined the links between types of childhood trauma and core beliefs in an eating-disordered population. Chart reviews were conducted for 91 eating-disordered women in treatment. Each woman was asked about a history of 4 types of trauma, and completed a standardized measure of core beliefs. This study failed to find links between those women who reported childhood trauma and their core beliefs. Regression analysis predicted 4 schema (Emotional Deprivation, Mistrust/Abuse, Vulnerability to Harm and Subjugation) that were associated …
Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
Statewide numbers paint a picture of declining employment and output, continuing widespread layoffs, slow wage and income growth, rapidly declining consumer confidence, weak consumer spending, stagnant tax revenues, high vacancy rates in the commercial real estate market, and no clear sign of growth in demand for the state’s technology products.
Reconstructing The Chinese American Experience In Lowell, Massachusetts, 1870s–1970s, Shehong Chen
Reconstructing The Chinese American Experience In Lowell, Massachusetts, 1870s–1970s, Shehong Chen
Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
This is a study of the Chinese American experience in Lowell, Massachusetts, over the century from the 1870s through the 1970s. I have selected this period for study because the 1870s witnessed the first appearance of Chinese laundries in Lowell, and the 1970s, the disappearance of Chinese laundries in Lowell. Notably, this study attempts to fill in two existing gaps in historical scholarship. First, the experiences of many of Lowell’s ethnic groups have been documented or studied, but the experience of the Chinese has been ignored. Secondly, the history of Chinese Americans in New England cities and towns has generally …

Case Studies On The Implementation Of The Workforce Investment Act: Focus On Accessibility, Sheila Fesko, Jaimie Ciulla Timmons, Allison Cohen Hall
Case Studies Series, Institute for Community Inclusion
Universal access is a central tenet of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and mandates that One-Stop Career Center (One-Stop) services be accessible for individuals with disabilities. Partnerships between Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and workforce development agencies have increased awareness about the importance of service accessibility and states have been responding to this issue in their planning and service delivery. This brief highlights the innovative strategies states have used to make their One-Stops better able to support job seekers with disabilities. This brief is part of a series of products offering practical solutions for state and local entities as they implement the …

The United Nations And The Magna Carta For Children, Winston E. Langley
The United Nations And The Magna Carta For Children, Winston E. Langley
John M. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies Publications
The impulse that invited the preparation of this book is one which is linked to the convergence of a number of factors bearing on my interest in human rights. First, the brutality visited on children during World War II has had an abiding negative effect on my sense of what is possible in human conduct. Second, I am persuaded that children are not simply the means by which human societies are continued, but, as well, the potential source of moral revitalization and transformation for those societies. Third, I recognize that the human rights movement, which followed World War II, holds …
Tests Of Independence In Separable Econometric Models, Donald J. Brown, Marten H. Wegkamp
Tests Of Independence In Separable Econometric Models, Donald J. Brown, Marten H. Wegkamp
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
A common stochastic restriction in econometric models separable in the latent variablesis the assumption of stochastic independence between the unobserved and observed exogenous variables. Both simple and composite tests of this assumption are derived from properties of independence empirical processes and the consistency of these tests is established

Hosford-Abernethy Bicycle And Pedestrian Connections: An Alternative Routes Analysis Linking Se Clinton Street And The Eastbank Esplanade, Shannon Axtell, Evan Mackenzie, Brady Smith, Allison Wildman
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
SE Clinton is a popular bicycle route for commuter, utilitarian and recreational bicyclists that fails to provide a safe and direct connection to the Eastbank Esplanade and downtown Portland. Furthermore, residents in the Hosford-Abernethy and Brooklyn neighborhoods do not have a safe bicycle and pedestrian connection to access the Eastbank Esplanade. This gap in the bicycle and pedestrian network must be removed to serve the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians.
This project presents four alternative bicycle and pedestrian routes that connect the Eastbank Esplanade and the SE Clinton bikeway through the Central Eastside Industrial District. Each alternative, with improvements, is …

A Road Map For Accessible, Affordable And Adaptable Broadband Telecommunications In Portland, Abdullah Al-Thabt, Jamison Cavallaro, David De La Rocha, Brendan C. Finn, Jonathan Konkol
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
Portland needs to plan for broadband development and take steps to ensure these plans are implemented. In order to implement Portland's land use and economic development goals, broadband must be accessible to all users. This means that any home or business must have access to the best available network technology to meet their needs. Currently, broadband service is not provided at uniform levels City-wide. It must be affordable, which requires real competition among providers. Portland's market presently offers too few choices outside the central business district to meet this criterion. In addition, broadband must be adaptable to future uses. Without …
Intention To Pursue Post-Secondary Education, And Related Factors, Among Jamaican Senior High School Students, Teran T. Milford
Intention To Pursue Post-Secondary Education, And Related Factors, Among Jamaican Senior High School Students, Teran T. Milford
Dissertations
Purpose of the Study. The proportion of female students in post-secondary schools in Jamaica is approximately twice that of their male counterpart. This is in contrast to the observation that the proportion of male and female students in elementary and secondary schools is about the same. Little or no studies have been conducted to examine factors related to the disproportion of male and female students in tertiary institutions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the perception of senior high school students regarding their intention to pursue post-secondary education, and to determine the extent to which the value …

Recognizing Macroeconomic Fluctuations In Value Based Management, Lars Oxelheim, Clas Wihlborg
Recognizing Macroeconomic Fluctuations In Value Based Management, Lars Oxelheim, Clas Wihlborg
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Value Based Management (VBM) has become a common tool for evaluating corporate strategies and projects from the perspective of shareholder value maximization, and can be an important input for corporate compensation systems. But traditional VBM frameworks make no systematic effort to distinguish between changes in performance attributable to macroeconomic fluctuations beyond management's control and changes in performance that reflect the intrinsic competitive position of the firm.
The authors have developed an approach for “filtering out” the impact of macroeconomic fluctuations on cash flows for purposes of performance evaluation. Such fluctuations are captured by changes in exchange rates, interest rates, and …

Updating The Standard For The Next Generation Of Electronic Media Historians, Gary R. Edgerton
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
Broadcasting as a field of study is at least 75 years old. Part of the discipline’s folklore has it that Edward R. Murrow took the first radio announcing class ever offered in the U.S. at the then Washington State College in 1928. “It was called community drama, in order to qualify as an academic course,” explained Alexander Kendrick, one of “Murrow’s boys” and the initial biographer of the legendary newsman (Kendrick, 1969, p. 100). Whether this offering was really a historical first is beside the point; what is important for our purposes is that Murrow’s formative educational experience in broadcasting …

Introduction: The attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been defined as a disorder of self control characterized clinically by a short attention span, excessive motor activity and poor impulse control.
Objective: The main objective is to describe how methodological difficulties related to the design of epidemiological studies make an important contribution to the group of heterogeneous data which might lead to doubts regarding the validity of ADHD in children. In recent decades the psychiatric definition of this disorder has varied. This has affected the number and combination of clinical signs necessary for diagnosis of ADHD. The variation in the prevalence …

Justice For A Genocide?, Sandra F. Joireman
Justice For A Genocide?, Sandra F. Joireman
Political Science Faculty Publications
In Rwanda today it is considered poor manners to cry at funerals. Public grieving for the death of a single person is thought to minimize the grief people felt after the genocide when many people lost entire families. That genocide was eight years ago and to date little has been done to bring the perpetrators to justice. The newly established gacaca courts are meant to rectify this situation and assess the guilt or innocence of some of the tens of thousands of people now held in Rwandan jails.

Shaping Leisure/Tourism Places:The Role Of Holiday Home Owners: A Case Study Of Courtown, Co. Wexford, Ireland, Ziene Mottiar, Bernadette Quinn
Articles
This article investigates the role played by holiday home owners in shaping leisure / tourism places. Having reviewed recent trends in the holiday home literature, the paper argues the literature has failed to adequately consider how this group of actors can play a role in developing leisure / tourism places. The research is case study based and reports the findings of a study undertaken in Courtown, a small seaside resort in the Republic of Ireland. Specifically, it investigates the role that holiday home owners played in a controversy that arose with respect to developing tourism accommodation in an area of …
Symbols, Practices And Myth-Making: Cultural Perspectives On The Wexford Festival Opera, Bernadette Quinn
Symbols, Practices And Myth-Making: Cultural Perspectives On The Wexford Festival Opera, Bernadette Quinn
Articles
In recent decades geographers have paid increasing attention to festivals. They have construed festivals as important practices through which people connect with their place and as authored landscapes designed to promote particular sets of values and attach specific meanings to place. Tourism influences the processes and dynamics ongoing in festival settings and this paper seeks to unravel some of the complex ways in which it influences the reproduction of cultural meanings there. It draws on research conducted on the Wexford Festival Opera in the Republic of Ireland and analyses the symbolism, practices and meanings found to be associated with the …
Shaping Tourism Places: Agency And Interconnections In Festival Settings, Bernadette Quinn
Shaping Tourism Places: Agency And Interconnections In Festival Settings, Bernadette Quinn
Books / Book chapters
In the contemporary era local places seem exposed to more and faster change than ever before. The difference between places seems to be diminishing and debates as to whether ‘cultural homogenisation’ or ‘reconstituted difference’ best describes the changes affecting place feature prominently in recent social science and humanities literatures. Local places are linked to regional, national and supra-national spheres through multiple connections. Tourism is one important globalising force, linking places into the wider world and influencing the changing meanings of place. This chapter is broadly concerned with examining how tourism is implicated in changing the meanings of place. The type …

Integrating Natural Coping And Survival Strategies Of African American Women Into Social Work Practice: Lessons Learned From The Works Of Nannie Helen Burruoghs, Lolita Cecelia Boykin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the historical coping and survival strategies of African American women - as reflected through the works of Nannie Helen Burroughs- that can be integrated into current social work practice. This research is important because is describes, explores and analyzes culturally relevant helping traditions, among African American women that have historically promoted their emotional and psychological well-being. An analysis of methods used by Burroughs was derived from articles, letters, speeches and minutes from various convention meetings. Also, a variety of secondary sources were also used during the research process. Results from the study are important in that they …
Scientific Empathy, American Buddhism, And The Ethnography Of Religion, Daniel S. Capper
Scientific Empathy, American Buddhism, And The Ethnography Of Religion, Daniel S. Capper
Faculty Publications
The expansion of the use of ethnography in the study of religion has led to substantial methodological confusion. The reflexive ethnographic efforts which exist commonly appeal to the need for ethnographer empathy for field subjects, although the nature and ethical ramifications of this empathy remain poorly explored. This essay offers a model of ethnographic empathy in terms of the methodological observations of Weber, Homans, and Kohut. Using a model of empathy in terms of a reflexive “evenly hovering attention” for data collection, possible gains in the field from this model are explored. These gains include overcoming obstacles to data collection …

Geography, Industrial Organization, And Agglomeration, Stuart S. Rosenthal, William C. Strange
Center for Policy Research
This paper makes two contributions to the empirical literature on agglomeration economies. First, the paper uses a unique and rich database in conjunction with mapping software to measure the geographic extent of agglomerative externalities. Previous papers have been forced to assume that agglomeration economies are club goods that operate at a metropolitan scale. Second, the paper tests for the existence of organizational agglomeration economies of the kind studied qualitatively by Saxenian (1994). This is a potentially important source of increasing returns that previous empirical work has not considered. Results indicate that localization economies attenuate rapidly and that industrial organization affects …
