Nonstandard Work In Developed Economies: Causes And Consequences, Susan N. Houseman, Editor, Machiko Osawa, Editor Jan 2003

Nonstandard Work In Developed Economies: Causes And Consequences, Susan N. Houseman, Editor, Machiko Osawa, Editor

Upjohn Press

This book reveals the considerable variation in the levels of growth in a broad set of nonstandard work arrangements while presenting a comprehensive view of how, as a result, the nature of the employment relationship is changing within and among countries. The international roster of economists, sociologists, and labor law experts who contributed draw on cross-country variations in economic conditions and institutional characteristics to explain why some arrangements have grown faster in some countries than in others and what this means for workers. By considering a broad array of nonstandard work arrangements in a number of economies, the authors provide …

Parental Reports Of The Development Of Autism In Their Children: The Relevance Of Regression, Comorbidity, And Genetics In The Detection Ofearly Characteristics, Robin Page Goin Jan 2003

Parental Reports Of The Development Of Autism In Their Children: The Relevance Of Regression, Comorbidity, And Genetics In The Detection Ofearly Characteristics, Robin Page Goin

Theses and Dissertations

Early detection of autism plays an important role in enhancing developmental outcomes for affected children. Identifying potential characteristics of the disorder evident during infancy and toddlerhood aids efforts to screen for such symptoms, which may lead to earlier and more accurate diagnoses; however, it is unclear to what extent certain factors encourage or impede early detection. Because parents are responsible for making decisions on behalf of their children based upon their perceptions of children's developmental progression, caregivers were queried in terms of their beliefs about the development of autism characteristics in their children. Participants included 393 caregivers of children with …

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper will examine the likely impacts of the proposed Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) that was initiated by President Bush in 1994 and is anticipated to include 34 countries in the Western Hemisphere excluding Cuba and to come into force during 2005. The paper will focus on the likely trade effects for Brazil, the largest potential member of the FTAA. In the first part, I will review the current trade relations between countries in the Western Hemisphere and the US, including the various bilateral and multilateral agreements such as NAFTA, MERCOSUR, CBI, The Andean Trade Preference Act, …

Organizing Madness: Psychiatric Nosology In Historical Perspective, Eric D. Jackson Jan 2003

Organizing Madness: Psychiatric Nosology In Historical Perspective, Eric D. Jackson

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper traces the history of psychiatric nosology in the US from its origins in the early 19th century through the most recent revision of the standardized classification, DSM-IV TR. The evolution of nosology is found to be shaped not only by advances in knowledge, but also by socio-historic and professional trends. The initial impetus for systematic classification came from outside the mental health profession, but later revisions reflected intraprofessional struggles and experiences. Future revisions will almost certainly be prone to these same intra- and extraprofessional influences, and may see a dramatic shift away from symptomatology and towards an etiological …

Effects Of Cohabitation On Engaged Adult Relationships, Matthew W. Chingren Jan 2003

Effects Of Cohabitation On Engaged Adult Relationships, Matthew W. Chingren

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Low premarital intimacy and less-than-realistic marital expectations have been shown to successfully predict lower marital satisfaction and success. This study used an independent groups design to investigate the effect of cohabitation on intimacy and marital expectations among engaged adult individuals. Group I (n=30) consisted of engaged individuals cohabiting with their fiances and Group II (n=82) included engaged individuals not cohabiting. Participants were obtained through a convenience sample. All participants provided demographic data and completed the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships (PAIR) and the Marriage Expectations Scale (MES). Previously married participants were excluded from MES analysis due to the nature …

Contesting Us Hegemony: A Case Study On Myanmar, Pin-Kwan Pratishthananda Jan 2003

Contesting Us Hegemony: A Case Study On Myanmar, Pin-Kwan Pratishthananda

Asian Review

In the "unipolar" world, the US claims to use its power to liberal states and civil societies. Myanmar is an anomaly, seemingly untouched by this influence. Since 1988, the military has vastly expanded its power and its roles in the society. The number of armed forces has increased. Intelligence gathering has proliferated. Military-created institutions have taken a larger role in the economy, generating more funds for various activities. The military has neutralized most of the ethnic insurgents, and created a wide range of organizations with roles in society. It has also inculcated an ideology in which the military is indispensable …

The Resurgence Of Us Influence On Thailand's Economy And Southeast Asia Policy, 1990-2001, Ukrist Pathmanand Jan 2003

The Resurgence Of Us Influence On Thailand's Economy And Southeast Asia Policy, 1990-2001, Ukrist Pathmanand

Asian Review

This article offers an unconventional approach to the study of US-Thai relations. The conventional approach emphasizes political, military, and security affairs but ignores the interrelationship between the economic and political roles of the US in Thai policy making. This study emphasizes the US economic influence in two periods: during the period of anti-communism in the Cold War era, and again during the financial crisis of 1997 onwards. The first of these periods was set within the context of the Cold War. The US promoted liberal development policies as part of anti-communist strategy. The second of these periods was set in …

Rethinking The Cold War And The American Empire, Soravis Jayanama Jan 2003

Rethinking The Cold War And The American Empire, Soravis Jayanama

Asian Review

The end of the Cold War has renewed interest in Cold War historiography, leading to an explosion of academic literature in this field. A "new Cold War history" seems to be emerging, promising to offer a more international and less "orthodox" perspective, tapping on multi-archival sources. A spate of new works on the crucial and formative period of the Cold War (1945-52) has appeared, on the one hand, shedding a new light on the emergence of the postwar American empire and its foreign relations, and on the other hand, re-examining the role of the Soviet Union and its allies in …

On Defining At-Risk: The Role Of Educational Ritual In Constructions Of Success And Failure, Deanna L. Fassett Jan 2003

On Defining At-Risk: The Role Of Educational Ritual In Constructions Of Success And Failure, Deanna L. Fassett

Basic Communication Course Annual

By adopting an ethnomethodological approach to the analysis of focus group interviews with undergraduate students enrolled in and teachers of the introductory course in speech communication, this essay demonstrates that we understand to be a stable, objective aspect of reality--i.e., the inevitability of educational failure--is in fact a human accomplishment, the result of concerted, through unreflective, social action. This paper explores the ways in which students' and graduate teaching assistants' espousal of educational rituals may create and sustain their (or their students') risk of educational failure. Futhermore, the implications of such a perspective for graduate teaching assistants of the basic …

Performative Pedagogy, At-Risk Students, And The Basic Course: Fourteen Moments In Search Of Possibility, John T. Warren Jan 2003

Performative Pedagogy, At-Risk Students, And The Basic Course: Fourteen Moments In Search Of Possibility, John T. Warren

Basic Communication Course Annual

This essay sketches out the complications of a performative pedagogy in the context of a basic communication course, specifically examining how the course negotiates and constitutes what communication scholars have called "educational risk." To do this, a collage of narratives are provided--a series of images which, when seen in totality, might generate a conversation about how communication studies could address the intersections of risk, critical performative pedagogy, and the classrooms of our basic communication courses. To initiate this conversation, the essay is grounded in the work of communication studies. Taken together, the collage seeks to ask questions, pose problems, and …

Impact Of High School Preparation On College Oral Communication Apprehension, Karen Kangas Dwyer, Robert E. Carlson, Jennifer Dalbey Jan 2003

Impact Of High School Preparation On College Oral Communication Apprehension, Karen Kangas Dwyer, Robert E. Carlson, Jennifer Dalbey

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study examines the impact of high school public speaking skills training and public speaking experiences on college overall communication apprehension (CA) and public speaking context CA. The results show that public speaking skill-training in high school is significantly related to lower CA levels or students upon entering a college-level basic speech course. In addition, students who report more public speaking experiences both in high school setting and outside the high school setting, tend to report lower overall CA and lower CA in the public speaking context.

Stretching The Academic Dollar: The Appropriateness Of Utilizing Instructor Assistants In The Basic Course, Paul D. Turman, Matthew H. Barton Jan 2003

Stretching The Academic Dollar: The Appropriateness Of Utilizing Instructor Assistants In The Basic Course, Paul D. Turman, Matthew H. Barton

Basic Communication Course Annual

As more universities across the country are feeling the pressures of providing an increasingly rigid financial accountability to tax payers and state legislatures, speech and communication departments find themselves in a precarious position. Namely, how can communication departments teach the budding number of students enrolled in their courses with little increase in budget, while continuing to produce effective speakers? One common answer to this dilemma involves the use of graduate students, and in some cases undergraduate students, as teaching assistants in the basic course. This study examines the efficacy of using undergraduate instructor assistants in the basic course at a …

Bootstrapping Svm Active Learning By Incorporating Unlabelled Images For Image Retrieval, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Zhihua Zhang Jan 2003

Bootstrapping Svm Active Learning By Incorporating Unlabelled Images For Image Retrieval, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Zhihua Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The performance of image retrieval with SVM active learning is known to be poor when started with few labelled images only. In this paper, the problem is solved by incorporating the unlabelled images into the bootstrapping of the learning process. In this work, the initial SVM classifier is trained with the few labelled images and the unlabelled images randomly selected from the image database. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results show that by incorporating unlabelled images in the bootstrapping, the efficiency of SVM active learning can be improved, and thus improves the overall retrieval performance.

Australian Online Supermarket Usability, Mark Freeman, Peter N. Hyland, Jeffrey Soar Jan 2003

Australian Online Supermarket Usability, Mark Freeman, Peter N. Hyland, Jeffrey Soar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The issue of usability plays a vital role in the success of an online store. However, to date there has been limited published research into this issue and there has been no research conducted into multiple item purchasing. There is much competition in the grocery shopping industry between the two major physical supermarket chains in Australia, Woolworths and Coles, both in traditional stores and online. Online, the major competitor is ShopFast, which does not have a traditional supermarket storefront to complement its online operations. The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis into the usability of ordering …
