Factors That Affect Party Institutionalization: Ethnicity, Electoral Systems, And Economics In East Europe, Joe Robbins Jan 2003

Factors That Affect Party Institutionalization: Ethnicity, Electoral Systems, And Economics In East Europe, Joe Robbins

Masters Theses

This thesis examines party institutionalization in East Europe. Ethnicity, electoral systems and economics are variables explored in the substantive chapters. Many political science studies examine the number of parties in East Europe, but only a few studies study party institutionalization. Chapter 1 establishes the foundations for this thesis and provides an overview of each chapter.

In the second chapter, I analyze the relationship between institutionalized parties and ethnicity. Kitschelt (1992) argues that in the absence of institutionalized parties, voters look to other factors, such as ethnicity, when voting. The results from this chapter report that ethnicity plays a limited role …

Nuclearization Of Pakistan: Motivations And Intentions, Rabia Akhtar Jan 2003

Nuclearization Of Pakistan: Motivations And Intentions, Rabia Akhtar

Masters Theses

Pakistan conducted six thermonuclear tests in response to five Indian nuclear tests in 1998. There existed an interplay of various actors at the external and the internal level which enabled Pakistan to reach the decision to detonate. This thesis examines the motivations and intentions that acted as a driving force for Pakistan to make the decision to go nuclear. In order to identify these intentions, this thesis applies the national decision making model presented by Graham Allison. The arguments presented will demonstrate whether Allison's model explains the complexity of Pakistan's decision to go nuclear and which part of the model …

The Effect Of Choice Order On Off Task Behavior In A Child With Autism, Lisa R. Cole Jan 2003

The Effect Of Choice Order On Off Task Behavior In A Child With Autism, Lisa R. Cole

Masters Theses

This research project was designed to examine the effects of child-choice versus clinician-choice over the ordering of activities during speech-language therapy sessions. The dependent variables included disruptive/inappropriate behavior, non-task related verbal behavior, and redirection to the task. The independent variable was the presentation of choice over the ordering of activities within a therapy session.

The subject in this case study was a nine-year-old boy diagnosed with autism. At the beginning of each therapy session either the child or the clinician decided on the ordering of activities. A picture board and picture cards showed the activities that would be completed in …

The Impact Of Intrastate Variations In Higher Education Funding On Intrastate Research And Development Expenditures, Stephanie Nicole Gosnell Jan 2003

The Impact Of Intrastate Variations In Higher Education Funding On Intrastate Research And Development Expenditures, Stephanie Nicole Gosnell

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The paper examines the question "Does specialization in higher education result in improved economic outcomes for a state as measured by increased research and development (R&D) in the state?" A fixed effects model is employed to estimate how the variation in state funding per pupil across institutions of higher education (a measure of specialization) impacts R&D funding in the state. Expenditure per pupil data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) from 1992-2000 for the approximately 600 public, 4- year institutions in the U.S., is used to capture the variation in state funding in institutions of higher education. The …

Anticompetitive Settlement Of Intellectual Property Disputes, Herbert J. Hovenkamp, Mark D. Janis, Mark A. Lemley Jan 2003

Anticompetitive Settlement Of Intellectual Property Disputes, Herbert J. Hovenkamp, Mark D. Janis, Mark A. Lemley

All Faculty Scholarship

The overwhelming majority of intellectual property lawsuits settle before trial. These settlements involve agreements between the patentee and the accused infringer, parties who are often competitors before the lawsuit. Because these competitors may agree to stop competing, to regulate the price each charges, and to exchange information about products and prices, settlements of intellectual property disputes naturally raise antitrust concerns. In this paper, we suggest a way to reconcile the interests of intellectual property law and antitrust law in evaluating intellectual property settlements. In Part I, we provide background on the issue. Part II argues that in most cases courts …

Privacy Or Police Powers, Raegan Gibson Jan 2003

Privacy Or Police Powers, Raegan Gibson

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Privacy is a simple value shared by most people, but when that value is placed in the context of a right it, becomes more complex. The right to privacy has been recognized and expanded in the United States throughout history. This right is not absolute, however, and is in constant conflict with the state police powers. The Courts have become the mediator in this battle. While they have maintained a good balance between the two in the past, new threats to national security and technological advances prove to threaten that balance. This paper explores the battle between privacy rights and …

Opening Our Eyes To Mind Blindness Within The Home, Melissa C. Jones Jan 2003

Opening Our Eyes To Mind Blindness Within The Home, Melissa C. Jones

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Being a parent of a child with autism and/or a developmental disorder may cause profound effects on the parents' relationships with others (Trepagnier, 1999). This qualitative study describes how a diagnosis of autism and/or a developmental disorder for a child affects the parent's relationships with others. The goal is to help nurses determine appropriate interventions for these clients. Following Human Subjects Review Board approval, a researcher-developed questionnaire was completed by a convenience sample of six parents known to the researcher and known to have a child with autism and/or a developmental disorder. The findings of the study indicate that all …

The Great Leveler: Free Business Resources On The World Wide Web, Jason Martin

The Southeastern Librarian

The Internet is full of reliable sources that are filled with a wealth of business information. Some of these sites are fee-based with subscription prices that are much lower than those of the large commercial databases. Unfortunately, only a single subscriber may use most of those fee-based sites. That means the librarian must turn to sites that are free to the general public. Many of these free sites rival fee-based services for quality and quantity of information.

Child Placement Decisions: The Relevance Of Facial Resemblance And Biological Relationships, David J. Herring Jan 2003

Child Placement Decisions: The Relevance Of Facial Resemblance And Biological Relationships, David J. Herring

Articles

This article discusses two studies of evolution and human behavior addressing child-adult relationships and explores implications for policies and practices surrounding placement of children in foster homes. The first study indicates that men favor children whose facial features resemble their own facial features. This study may justify public child welfare decisionmakers in considering facial resemblance as they attempt to place children in safe foster homes.

The second study indicates that parents are likely to invest more in children who are biologically related to them, thus enhancing their long term well-being. Among other implications, this study may justify public child welfare …

The Colorblind Lottery, Pauline Kim Jan 2003

The Colorblind Lottery, Pauline Kim

Scholarship@WashULaw

Although the Supreme Court upheld Michigan Law School's admissions policies in Grutter, the multiple opinions in that case revealed the deep divisions that remain over the legitimacy of race-conscious policies and the meaning of equal protection. At the heart of this division lies disagreement over the concept of colorblindness. For Justices Scalia and Thomas, as well as the advocacy groups that backed the plaintiffs in Grutter and Gratz, colorblindness is an absolute imperative, prohibiting race-conscious decision-making in all but the most dire situations. This insistence on formal colorblindness has lead to the conclusion in several recent court cases that race-conscious …

First Nations And States: Contesting Polities, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The U.S. Supreme Court in an historic case in 1886, U.S. v. Kagama, which devastated tribal sovereignty by affirming the legality of the 1885 Major Crimes Act that problematically extended federal criminal jurisdiction over "all" Indians for seven major crimes—murder, manslaughter, rape, etc., (today that number has increased to 14 crimes)—more accurately declared in that same case that state governments could be characterized as the "deadliest enemies" of indigenous nations.

Not surprisingly, most of these lawmakers are serving in western states where more than 80 percent of indigenous peoples live—Alaska is home to 11 Native lawmakers; Montana has elected seven; New Mexico's legislature now has five Indian legislators; Oklahoma, Arizona, and South Dakota each have three Indian representatives; Washington has two; and Colorado and North Dakota have one each. Eastern states also have indigenous representation: Maine has two representatives—a Penobscot and a Passamaquoddy; North Carolina's Lumbee tribe has a member in the state legislature; and Vermont has a lone Native member.

Our preliminary results give us reason to be moderately …
