Legislative Terrorism: A Primer For The Non-Islamic State; Secularism And Different Believers, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis Dec 2002

Legislative Terrorism: A Primer For The Non-Islamic State; Secularism And Different Believers, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

In industrial societies where civil law and state institutions have become well-established secular vehicles for governing the populace, it is widely assumed that the state no longer has an interest in fortifying the religious sector as a complementary source of social control. Thus, a distinction is drawn between the Islamic state that is ruled by religious law and the secular state of Western industrial societies in which religion is deemed to have lost its influence in the public sphere. This dissertation argues that civil law is not religiously neutral and thus challenges a central premise of secularization theory. Introducing a …

New Paradigm In Classroom Assessment: The Externally Trained (Et) Observer Model, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

Traditional classroom assessment techniques are fraught with weaknesses and inherent contradictions. The proposed paradigm in classroom assessment - the Externally Trained (ET) Observer Model - is not a traditional classroom assessment model. It is a quality control measure which ultimately benefits both students and instructor

Developing Materials For The Teaching Of Grammar, Arshad Abd Samad Dec 2002

Developing Materials For The Teaching Of Grammar, Arshad Abd Samad

Arshad Abd Samad

Traditionally, materials used in the teaching of grammar have been for the specific purpose of providing grammar practice. Language drills used by the audiolingual method, for example, were structured in such a way so as to encourage automatic learning. Materials were used to pattern student language behaviour through carefully planned drill and practice. In the communicative approach, grammar activities tend to focus on interaction and reflect a social dimension. Materials used in this approach contain conversations and contextualised situations which focus on the message rather than the grammatical form. The kind of materials used in the teaching and learning of …

Mars And Venus At Twilight: A Critical Investigation Of Moralism, Age Effects, And Sex Differences, Daniel P. Aldrich, Rieko Kage Dec 2002

Mars And Venus At Twilight: A Critical Investigation Of Moralism, Age Effects, And Sex Differences, Daniel P. Aldrich, Rieko Kage

Daniel P Aldrich

Analysts have long sought to understand whether women and men have different ethical orientations. Some researchers have argued that women and men consistently make fundamentally different ethical judgments, especially of corruption; others have found no such disparities. This study considered whether an individual’s age may also play a role in determining his or her moral judgment. A statistical investigation of interactive effects between gender and age in a nationally representative data set from Japan shows that this interaction functions better as a predictor of moralism than does education or gender alone. Older individuals of both sexes were found to have …

The Use Of Complimentary Closings In E-Mail: American English Examples, Elizabeth C. Scheyder Dec 2002

The Use Of Complimentary Closings In E-Mail: American English Examples, Elizabeth C. Scheyder

Elizabeth C Scheyder

This paper attempts to address the lack of clear stylistic guidelines for non-native speakers of English writing e-mails by focusing on the particular problem of closings. To assist teachers who are asked to guide students on this issue, the paper examines the complimentary closings that 175 native speakers of American English used in 532 unique e-mails to the author. Patterns are viewed in relation to the sender’s gender, age, and social distance to the recipient, as well as other factors. No closing at all was used in more than half of the e-mails studied, but closings did appear to depend …

Measuring The Economic Benefits Of Water Quality Improvements To Recreational Users In Six Northeastern States: An Application Of The Random Utility Maximization Model, George R. Parsons, Eric C. Helm, Tim Bondelid Dec 2002

Measuring The Economic Benefits Of Water Quality Improvements To Recreational Users In Six Northeastern States: An Application Of The Random Utility Maximization Model, George R. Parsons, Eric C. Helm, Tim Bondelid

George Parsons

We estimate the economic benefits of water quality improvements for recreational users of lakes, rivers and coastlines in six northeastern states. The benefits are measured using separate travel cost random utility maximization models for fishing, boating, swimming, and viewing. All models are for day-trip recreation. The models are estimated using data from the 1994 National Survey of Recreation and the Environment and from water quality modeling simulations of the National Water Pollution Control Assessment Model. We consider several scenarios for water quality improvements and estimate annual benefits in the region due the Clean Water Act to be near $100 million …

La Neutralite Désengagée De La Science Politique Américaine, Vanessa Ruget Dec 2002

La Neutralite Désengagée De La Science Politique Américaine, Vanessa Ruget

Vanessa Ruget

State Laws And The Independent Judiciary: An Analysis Of The Effects Of The Seventeenth Amendment On The Number Of Supreme Court Cases Holding State Laws Unconstitutional, Donald J. Kochan Dec 2002

State Laws And The Independent Judiciary: An Analysis Of The Effects Of The Seventeenth Amendment On The Number Of Supreme Court Cases Holding State Laws Unconstitutional, Donald J. Kochan

Donald J. Kochan

In recent years, the Seventeenth Amendment has been the subject of legal scholarship, congressional hearings and debate, Supreme Court opinions, popular press articles and commentary, state legislative efforts aimed at repeal, and activist repeal movements. To date, the literature on the effects of the Seventeenth Amendment has focused almost exclusively on the effects on the political production of legislation and competition between legislative bodies. Very little attention has been given to the potential adverse effects of the Seventeenth Amendment on the relationship between state legislatures and the federal courts. This Article seeks to fill part of that literature gap, applying …

Western Attitudes Toward The Korean Language: An Overview Of Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century Mission Literature, David Silva Dec 2002

Western Attitudes Toward The Korean Language: An Overview Of Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century Mission Literature, David Silva

David Silva

Descriptions of Korea's linguistic situation written by Westerners during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries not only reveal native and foreign attitudes toward the Korean language but also provide insight into language-focused evangelization tactics embraced by Christian missionaries. Upon their arrival in Korea during the 1800s, Westerners encountered a long-standing system of diglossia: socio-historical relations between China and Korea gave rise to the use of various Korean "lects" in which the degree of Chinese elements differed. Moreover, the nation's indigenous writing system, han'gul, was widely regarded by Koreans as culturally subordinate to Chinese script, an attitude that garnered much attention …
