Previous Emergency Department Use Among Homicide Victims And Offenders: A Case-Control Study, Cameron S. Crandall, Peter F. Jost, Lisa M. Broidy, Jerry Daday, David P. Sklar

Sociology Faculty Publications

We differentiate risk factors for future homicide victimization and offending, and we measure emergency department (ED) use among homicide victims, offenders, and controls. The design was a matched case-control study conducted in Bernalillo County, NM, and its university-affiliated health sciences center and hospital. All Bernalillo County homicide victims (N=124) and offenders (N=138) identified between January 1996 and December 2001 who were linked to university physician billing records and who had health care use during the 3 years before the homicide incident were included as cases. Randomly selected age-matched (±1 year) and sex-matched subjects with health care use within 3 years …

A Brief History Of Scholarly Study Of Detective Fiction, With Particular Attention To The Mystery & Detective Fiction Area Of The Popular Culture Association, Mary Freier

Mollie Freier

Academic study of detective fiction is an outgrowth of several things: the study of popular culture, women's studies, ethnic studies, and gender studies. It has become a legitimate area of study for academic scholars. The Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association's Detective & Mystery Fiction Area has been an important part of the legitimizing of the field, giving scholars a forum in which to present and discuss ideas and scholarly journals in which to publish.

Lessons From An Evaluation Of Five State Supported Delinquency Prevention Projects, Preston Elrod

Preston Elrod, Ph.D.

Presents an overview of findings from an evaluation of five state supported delinquency prevention projects that was conducted between July 1, 2001 and June 30, 2002. Each of the projects evaluated was funded as part of the Kentucky Community Partnerships to Prevent Delinquency Initiative. This initiative represented a major effort by the Commonwealth through its state Department of Juvenile Justice to assist communities in their efforts to develop local delinquency prevention plans and to fund programs that address local needs in eight geographic areas within the state that were identified by DJJ as having high levels of juvenile crime.

National Energy Policy: Japan, Paul Scalise Dec 2003

National Energy Policy: Japan, Paul Scalise

Paul J. Scalise

The objectives of Japan’s national energy policy today are defined by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) as the ‘‘four Es’’: energy security, environmental protection, economic efficiency, and economic growth. Although each goal is separately crucial to the long-term national good, implementation and compatibility of these four objectives have been in conflict for much of the time since World War II. The second largest economy in the world, Japan in the year 2000 represented 0.28% of the world’s landmass, 2.1% of the world’s population, and 15.3% of the world’s gross domestic product. Such statistics form the backdrop to …

The Nsf Engineering Research Centers And The University-Industry Research Revolution, Barry Bozeman, Craig Boardman Dec 2003

The Nsf Engineering Research Centers And The University-Industry Research Revolution, Barry Bozeman, Craig Boardman

Craig Boardman

The NSF engineering research centers (ERC) program served notice of a sea change in university research funding and institutional designs, representing a transition from department-based, principle investigator-oriented university science to a new center-based model encouraging universities to work with industry and to work beyond the strictures of academic disciplines. In our view, the past three decades of U.S. science and technology policy have not seen an institutional change of greater importance. This paper begins with a brief history of the ERC program, including discussion of the programs origins, goals and research foci, growth, and influence as a model for other …

Explaining Racial And Ethnic Differences In Marriage Among New, Unwed Parents, Kristen Harknett, Sara Mclanahan Dec 2003

Explaining Racial And Ethnic Differences In Marriage Among New, Unwed Parents, Kristen Harknett, Sara Mclanahan

Kristen Harknett

This article uses new data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study to examine the reasons why white, Mexican-American, and other Hispanic parents are approximately 2.5 times more likely than African-American parents to marry within the 30 months after a nonmarital birth. Combining Fragile Families microdata with 2000 U.S. Census data shows that marriage market conditions exert a large influence on marriage decisions, even among couples that already have formed a romantic relationship and had a child together. The findings also show that an undersupply of employed African-American men can explain a large portion of the racial and ethnic …

Discursive Opening And Closing In Organizational Self-Study: Culture As Trap And Tool In Wildland Firefighting Safety, Jennifer Ziegler Dec 2003

Discursive Opening And Closing In Organizational Self-Study: Culture As Trap And Tool In Wildland Firefighting Safety, Jennifer Ziegler

Jennifer A Ziegler

This article describes the practice of organizational self-study and examines its potential to create "discursive openings" in systematically distorted communication, particularly when members engage new discourses to investigate subjective and objective features of their own organizational lives. It investigates a recent self-study undertaken by the US Forest Service to diagnose and solve safety issues in wildland firefighting. The analysis reveals how engaging a new discourse allowed firefighters to imagine a new culture where they would be encouraged to think rather than just obey rules. But certain discursive closure moves reinforced the constitutive steering medium of bureaucratically managed safety rules, and …

Carlo Michelstaedter’S La Persuasione E La Rettorica: A Translation And Commentary, Carlo Michealstaedter, Russell Valentino, Cinzia Blum, David Depew Dec 2003

Carlo Michelstaedter’S La Persuasione E La Rettorica: A Translation And Commentary, Carlo Michealstaedter, Russell Valentino, Cinzia Blum, David Depew

David J Depew

This translation of Carlo Michelstaedter’s Persuasion and Rhetoric brings the powerful and original work of a seminal cultural figure to English-language readers for the first time. Ostensibly a commentary on Plato’s and Aristotle’s relation to the pre-Socratic philosophers, Michelstaedter’s deeply personal book is an extraordinary rhetorical feat that reflects the author’s struggle to make sense of modern life. This edition includes an introduction discussing his life and work, an extensive bibliography, notes to introduce each chapter, and critical notes illuminating the text. Within hours of completing Persuasion and Rhetoric, his doctoral thesis, 23-year-old Michelstaedter shot himself to death. The text …
