Disability Forecasts And Future Medicare Costs, Jayanta Bhattacharya, David Cutler, Dana Goldman, Michael Hurd, Geoffrey Joyce, Darius Lakdawalla, Constantijn Panis, Baoping Shang

Darius N. Lakdawalla

The traditional focus of disability research has been on the elderly, with good reason. Chronic disability is much more prevalent among the elderly, and it has a more direct impact on the demand for medical care. It is also important to understand trends in disability among the young, however, particularly if these trends diverge from those among the elderly. These trends could have serious implications for future health care spending because more disability at younger ages almost certainlytranslates into more disability among tomorrow’s elderly, and disability is a key predictor of health care spending. Using data from the Medicare Current …

The Effects Of Loneliness On Relational Maintenance Behaviors: An Attributional Perspective, Donna Henson, Kristin Dybvig-Pawelko, Daneil Canary Dec 2003

The Effects Of Loneliness On Relational Maintenance Behaviors: An Attributional Perspective, Donna Henson, Kristin Dybvig-Pawelko, Daneil Canary

Donna Henson

This study links the experience of loneliness to the use of relational maintenance behaviors. More precisely, an attributional perspective on loneliness is adopted, wherein chronic loneliness leads to attributions for the cause of loneliness to stable, internal, and uncontrollable factors; situational loneliness is more likely to be attributed to unstable, external, and controllable factors. Over 400 participants completed measures of chronic and situational loneliness, and relational maintenance strategies. Residts indicated that both forms of loneliness are negatively associated with maintenance strategies. As anticipated, chronically lonely people reported the least use of relational maintenance behaviors across relationship types.

More Than Ink-Stained Wretches: The Resocialization Of Print Journalists In Converged Newsrooms, Jane Singer Dec 2003

More Than Ink-Stained Wretches: The Resocialization Of Print Journalists In Converged Newsrooms, Jane Singer

Jane B. Singer

Newsroom experiments with convergence-a sharing of news staffs, technologies, products, and geography-disrupt not just the norms and routines of newspaper news work but, more profoundly, the professional socialization of print journalists and their perception of themselves as a distinctive kind of news worker. This article draws on case studies of four converged newsrooms to examine conceptual and sociological shifts among newspaper journalists. Findings suggest print journalists are undergoing resocialization to an expanded view of profrssionalism; ingrained habits and learned skills related to newsroom structure and storytelling norms are more resistant to change

Interest Groups And The Party Networks: Views From Inside The Beltway, Richard Skinner Dec 2003

Interest Groups And The Party Networks: Views From Inside The Beltway, Richard Skinner

Richard M. Skinner

A series of interviews with interest-group representatives in Washington, DC supports the proposition that many such politically active organizations are members of Democratic or Republican “party networks” – webs of relationships between individuals, groups and party committees. These networks assist candidates, share information and plot strategy. Personnel move between entities within the same network, but not between those in opposing ones. In an atmosphere of polarized parties and narrow margins of control, many interest groups appear to be strengthening their ties to their favored party.

How Do Migrants Fare In A Post-Apartheid South African Labor Market, Tukufu Zuberi, Amson Sibanda Dec 2003

How Do Migrants Fare In A Post-Apartheid South African Labor Market, Tukufu Zuberi, Amson Sibanda

Tukufu Zuberi

Excerpt from the text:

South African policies have historically emphasized employment as the reason for immigration. In post-apartheid South Africa, stories about how "immigrants take away our jobs" abound in the mass media, yet few empirical studies have been undertaken to examine the validity of this claim. This study looks at the relationship between migration status, nativity, and labor force outcomes in the post-apartheid labor market.

Empirical Study On Location Indeterminacy Of Localities, Sungsoon Hwang, Jean-Claude Thill Dec 2003

Empirical Study On Location Indeterminacy Of Localities, Sungsoon Hwang, Jean-Claude Thill

Sungsoon Hwang

It is often the case that locality boundaries are not sharply delineated in our mental maps. This paper examines the level of uncertainty involved in perceiving qualitative boundaries of urban vs. rural localities. To measure location indeterminacy of locality, we begin with modeling locality as fuzzy region or also known as egg-yolk model which is composed of core, boundary, and exterior. The more a specific locality (e.g., Buffalo, Amherst) is geocoded within core, the more locality is location-determinant. 5460 fatal traffic accidents gathered from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) in New York State from year 1996 to 2001 are …

The Effect Of Marital Status On The Standard Of Living Of Young Men And Women, Michael Seeborg Dec 2003

The Effect Of Marital Status On The Standard Of Living Of Young Men And Women, Michael Seeborg

Michael Seeborg

The National Longitudinal Survey of Youth data base is used to explore the effects of changes in marital status on the standard of living of a sample of young adults. OLS regression analysis indicates that changes in marital status have very different effects on young women and young men. Women receive large increases in their income-to-needs ratios when they marry, and they incur large declines in their income-to-needs ratios after experiencing a divorce or separation. Men, on the other hand, do not experience significant changes in their income-to-needs ratios when their marital status changes.
