Conceptual Analysis: A Method For Understanding Information As Evidence, And Evidence As Information, Jonathan Furner
Conceptual Analysis: A Method For Understanding Information As Evidence, And Evidence As Information, Jonathan Furner
Jonathan Furner
The utility of conceptual analysis for archival science is assessed by means of an exploratory evaluation in which the concept of evidence is analyzed. Usage of the term “evidence” in the philosophies of science, law, and history is briefly reviewed; candidates for necessary conditions of evidentiariness are identified and examined; and taxonomies are built of evidentiariness and of archival inference. Correspondences are shown to exist between the concepts of evidentiariness and relevance, and between the domains of archival science and social epistemology, thereby pointing in promising directions for further research. The tentative conclusion is reached that conceptual analysis may profitably …

The Role Of "Marriage Agencies" In The Sexual Exploitation And Trafficking Of Women From The Former Soviet Union, Donna M. Hughes Dr.
Donna M. Hughes
Each year, tens of thousands of women leave the countries of the former Soviet Union for destinations all over the world. Driven by poverty, unemployment, and media images of Western lifestyles, women accept risky offers of employment and marriage in hope of finding a better life,
Homeless Persons' Residential Preferences And Needs: A Pilot Survey, Russell K. Schutt
Homeless Persons' Residential Preferences And Needs: A Pilot Survey, Russell K. Schutt
Russell K. Schutt
The 2003 Pilot Survey of Residential Preferences and Needs sampled individuals with psychiatric difficulties at three large generic shelters for adult individuals in Boston and one of four transitional shelters funded by the Metro Boston Region of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. The survey measured: homeless persons’ residential preferences; the residential recommendations of shelter-based clinicians for these homeless persons; clinicians’ assessments of these persons’ living skills and safety. Respondents at the DMH shelter were somewhat more satisfied with their shelter and with the people who stayed there than were those at the generic shelters. The DMH shelter …

Outcomes And Costs Of Day Hospital Treatment And Nonmedical Day Treatment For Chemical Dependency, Michael T. French, Jane Witbrodt, Lee Ann Kaskutas
Outcomes And Costs Of Day Hospital Treatment And Nonmedical Day Treatment For Chemical Dependency, Michael T. French, Jane Witbrodt, Lee Ann Kaskutas
Michael T. French
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to estimate the outcomes and costs of day hospital and nonmedical community-based day treatment for chemical dependency. METHOD: A community sample of 271 adults (179 men) dependent on alcohol and/or drugs was recruited and randomized to either a hospital-based (medical) day treatment program or to a community-based (nonmedical) day treatment program. The day hospital (DH) program lasted for 3 weeks. One community-based program (CP2) lasted for 4 weeks, and the other (CP1) lasted for 6 weeks but with shorter treatment days and more criminal justice clients. Because of our concerns regarding treatment fidelity, …

An Educational Pamphlet Changes Help-Seeking Attitudes For Depression And Suicidality In South Asian Women., D Bhugra, M H. Hicks
Madelyn Hsiao-Rei Hicks
South Asian women suffer disproportionately high rates of suicide and attempted suicide. Yet few intervention studies on this group have been done. A total of 180 British South Asian women were sampled to pilot test an educational pamphlet about depression and suicidality. After reading the pamphlet, significantly more women assessed themselves as willing to confide in their clinicians, friends, and spouses if they felt depressed or suicidal, rather than not telling anyone. Also, more women reported that they felt that antidepressants were helpful for depression after they read the pamphlet. These changes remained four to six weeks later. The pamphlet …

The Expulsion Of The Jews From France In 1306: A Modern Fiscal Analysis, Stéphane Mechoulan
The Expulsion Of The Jews From France In 1306: A Modern Fiscal Analysis, Stéphane Mechoulan
Stéphane Mechoulan
In 1306, at the peak of a severe financial and monetary crisis, Philippe the Fair expelled the Jews from his kingdom, declared himself creditor of their debts, seized their property and auctioned it off. Was this a clever move, financially speaking? Did Philippe gain more, by killing the goose that laid the golden egg, than by securing a steady flow of taxes? Taking discounting into account, conservative bounds on the sum collected through the seizures over the years that followed the expulsion challenge the traditional view that it was a bad deal. Still, the windfall brought by the relative success …

Ephemeral To Enduring: The Internet Archive And Its Role In Preserving Digital Media, Eli Edwards
Eli Edwards
The Internet was first created as a communications network, but it has produced myriad effects in many sectors of technology, business, and society. Among these important changes are the growth of electronic publishing and the increasing use of the Internet as a medium for disseminating diverse documents, literature, art, journalism, commentary, and miscellaneous expressions of information and thought. Digital media, and the rise of Internet distribution of it, has caused profound changes in librarianship as well.

Guilds, Laws, And Markets For Manufactured Merchandise In Late-Medieval England, Gary Richardson
Guilds, Laws, And Markets For Manufactured Merchandise In Late-Medieval England, Gary Richardson
Gary Richardson
The prevailing paradigm of medieval manufacturing presumes guilds monopolized markets for durable goods in late-medieval England. The sources of the monopolies are said to have been the charters of towns, charters of guilds, parliamentary statutes, and judicial precedents. This essay examines those sources, demonstrates they did not give guilds legal monopolies in the modern sense of the word, and replaces that erroneous assumption with an accurate description of the legal institutions underlying markets for manufactures in medieval England.

Transfer Agents And Global Networks In The ‘Transnationalisation’ Of Policy, Diane L. Stone
Transfer Agents And Global Networks In The ‘Transnationalisation’ Of Policy, Diane L. Stone
Diane L Stone
This paper focuses on the role of international actors in policy/knowledge transfer processes to suggest that a dynamic for the transnationalisation of policy results. The paper seeks to redress the tendency towards methodological nationalism in much of the early policy transfer literature by bringing to the fore the role of international organisations and non-state actors in transnational transfer networks. Secondly, attention is drawn to ‘soft’ forms of transfer – such as the spread of norms – as a necessary complement to the hard transfer of policy tools, structures and practices and in which non-state actors play a more prominent role. …

Noble, But Not Savage: Difficulties In Racial-Mythic Conception Of Media Stereotypes., Rick Clifton Moore, John R. Fisher
Noble, But Not Savage: Difficulties In Racial-Mythic Conception Of Media Stereotypes., Rick Clifton Moore, John R. Fisher
Rick Clifton Moore
To overcome conceptual difficulties in earlier media stereotype research, Seiter (1986) and Gorham (1999) propose that we think of stereotypes in ideological terms, especially as perpetuators of racial myths. Racial myths reinforce negative views of oppressed groups and positive views of the powerful. In this study, however, empirical data about preconceptions and film portrayals of Native Americans suggest that in some instances powerless groups can be “stereotyped” much more positively than powerful ones are.
