Learning Community: Popular Education And Homeless Women, Lorna Rivera Dec 2003

Learning Community: Popular Education And Homeless Women, Lorna Rivera

Lorna Rivera

In this essay, I present the voices of homeless women to illustrate the empowering impact of popular education on their lives. Popular education is a methodology of teaching and learning through dialogue that directly links curriculum content to people's lived experience and that inspires political action (Beder, 1996; Freire, 1985, 1990; Williams, 1996). On the basis of 5 years of ethnographic research in a shelter-based popular-education program, I describe how popular education approaches inspired a sense of community among a group of 50 homeless women of color. I also examine some of the barriers to literacy faced by women who …

Paper To Pdf: Making License Agreements Accessible Through The Opac, Marie Kennedy

Marie R. Kennedy

In search of a cohesive tool for managing license agreements, the University of Florida Libraries has devised an in-house project. This article tracks development of the project from its theoretical inception, which began in 1997. The project was intended to be an all-encompassing database that allowed tracking of license agreements from the time they were received in the Serials Acquisitions Unit to their final signature. The discussion follows the progress of the database development and details the current Portable Document Format (PDF) project in
place, which uses scanned license agreements linked to the OPAC (online public access catalog) title record …

Dead-End Jobs Or Stepping Stones? The Long-Run Consequences Of Early Industry And Occupation, Stacie Bosley Dec 2003

Dead-End Jobs Or Stepping Stones? The Long-Run Consequences Of Early Industry And Occupation, Stacie Bosley

Stacie Bosley

Dead-end jobs can be defined as a line of work in one’s early work history that leads to lower long-run wages. This study shows how early lines of work predict long-run worker wages and finds that there are significant differences in this relationship based on the skill level of the worker. In general, service-producing lines of work appear to penalize long-run wages, especially for low-skilled workers. Low-skilled workers in retail food/foodservice lines of work rank about in the middle of the spectrum between dead-end jobs and stepping stones. Long-run wage potential is better in retail food/foodservice than in manufacturing/operative jobs. …

Key Attributes That Support The Creation And Growth Of Ict Based Industrial Clusters, Malcolm Fraser, Stephen Kelly Dec 2003

Key Attributes That Support The Creation And Growth Of Ict Based Industrial Clusters, Malcolm Fraser, Stephen Kelly

Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly

This paper provides an exploratory review of current global research on industrial clusters, and seeks to identify the key success components of these clusters. It then discusses these attributes in terms of their implication for New Zealand ICT industrial clusters. It is argued that by reviewing the success attributes underpinning industrial clusters a baseline can be established for decision-making in both the commercial activities of industry vertical groups, as well as local/central government economic policy formulation. The paper identifies the key success factors as the presence of large pillar firms that intact with strong local demand via a sophisticated work …

Macroeconomic And Financial Sector Comparison With Saarc And Asean Countries, Safdar Khan Dec 2003

Macroeconomic And Financial Sector Comparison With Saarc And Asean Countries, Safdar Khan

Safdar Khan

Extract:
Two distinct regional associations, SAARC and ASEAN, comprise over seventeen different economies of Asia. These economies differ from each other in terms of their age, size and economic performance. However, some comparisons can be drawn between these intra-regional economies on the basis of economic and financial performance for a uniform period of observation, spanning from 1990 to 2003.1 This chapter discusses the financial sector indicators of the SAARC and ASEAN countries under the framework of macroeconomic performance, with the objective of assessing the level of Pakistan’s performance in comparison with these countries.

Going To The Chapel: Same Sex Marriage And Competing Narratives Of Intimate Citizenship, Marcus O'Donnell Dec 2003

Going To The Chapel: Same Sex Marriage And Competing Narratives Of Intimate Citizenship, Marcus O'Donnell

Marcus O'Donnell

The public discourse about marriage oscillates between a story of the ideal and a story of the everyday. A range of symbolic references or myths are mobilised in media stories about marriage, this is particularly evident in the polarised debate around same-sex marriage. This article identifies and explores three of the myths that underlie the rhetoric in same-sex marriage stories: 1) the evolution/revolution myth; 2) the apocalypse myth and 3) the myth of the child. It also argues that the production of such stories has effects on the realm of ‘intimate citizenship’ (Plummer 1995) and that it is through this …

Police Culture, Ethics And Entitlement Theory, Kathleen Bailey, Suzanne Wolfe, Brian Kingshott Dec 2003

Police Culture, Ethics And Entitlement Theory, Kathleen Bailey, Suzanne Wolfe, Brian Kingshott

Kathleen Bailey

Using entitlement theory as a lens for viewing police relationships, this paper will explore the police culture and provide a theoretical foundation for understanding police behavior and their response to stress. Entitlement theory suggests that individuals may develop impairments in their ability to empathize and behave in a mutually respectful manner, given significant relationships in which they have been underentitled, and/or traumatic experiences that have not been appropriately processed. It is proposed that early attachment experiences, the ensuing view of self and others, the police training and work culture, and traumatic experiences in the line of duty all contribute to …

Dreams Of Perfect Programs: Managing The Acquisition Of Electronic Resources, Marie Kennedy Dec 2003

Dreams Of Perfect Programs: Managing The Acquisition Of Electronic Resources, Marie Kennedy

Marie R. Kennedy

For more than a decade, academic libraries have been wrestling with the thorny issue of managing the acquisition of electronic resources. Where are we in the continuum from paper lists to vendor-designed management systems? This paper takes a look at several in-house initiatives around the country, commenting on the successes and failures of the homegrown programs built to track, update and manage the acquisition and behind-the-scenes maintenance of electronic resources. Realizing that libraries are now well equipped to identify what dream programs should entail, this paper also comments on how we can prepare for the future of electronic resource management.

“People Aren’T Afraid Anymore, But It’S Hard To Find Books:” Reading Practices That Inform The Personal And Social Identities Of Self-Identified Lesbian And Queer Young Women, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

A presentation of my dissertation research in which I examine reading as a taken-for-granted and under-studied aspect of information seeking and information use. Specifically, I look at the role of voluntary reading in the negotiation of alternative sexual identities amongst young women (18-23 years of age) who self-identify as lesbian, queer or bisexual.
