Agroforestry, Elephants, And Tigers: Balancing Conservation Theory And Practice In Human-Dominated Landscapes Of Southeast Asia, Philip J. Nyhus, R L. Tilson
Agroforestry, Elephants, And Tigers: Balancing Conservation Theory And Practice In Human-Dominated Landscapes Of Southeast Asia, Philip J. Nyhus, R L. Tilson
Philip J. Nyhus
Large mammal populations theoretically are best conserved in landscapes where large protected areas are surrounded by buffer zones, connected by corridors, and integrated into a greater ecosystem. Multi-use buffer zones, including those containing complex agroforestry systems, are promoted as one strategy to provide both economic benefits to people and conservation benefits to wildlife. We use the island of Sumatra, Indonesia to explore the benefits and limitations of this strategy. We conclude that conservation benefits are accrued by expanding the habitat available for large mammals but more attention needs to be focused on how to reduce and respond to human–wildlife conflict …
Bring It On: The Apocalypse Of George W. Bush, Marcus O'Donnell
Bring It On: The Apocalypse Of George W. Bush, Marcus O'Donnell
Marcus O'Donnell
This article examines a number of cinematic, literary and journalistic texts in the context of what film maker Tom Tykwer calls the “aesthetic memory” of September 11. In particular it explores the way these narratives relate to deeply embedded Western cultural myths of the apocalyptic. The apocalyptic language of American Christian fundamentalism and the heroic narratives of Hollywood film are explored as twin influences on a powerful civil religion dubbed by Jewett and Lawrence (2003) “The Captain America complex”.
The Determinants Of Italian Slowdown: What Do The Data Say?, Francesco Venturini
The Determinants Of Italian Slowdown: What Do The Data Say?, Francesco Venturini
Francesco Venturini
By considering growth accounts this paper discusses where the recent story of Italian labour productivity has diverged from the EU pattern. Similarly to the major continental countries, Italy has taken only limited advantage of the growth potential of ICT because of a generally unfavourable environment for innovation. Nevertheless, the decline in total factor productivity is found to play a more important role in the deceleration of GDP per hour worked of the late 1990s. Moreover, by scrutinizing industry performance, this paper shows the increasing weakness of traditional sectors, that is, where the Italian economy enjoys the major comparative advantages in …

Global crises reveal the weakness of our current ethical construct. A more inclusive ethical framework is needed to encourage and support sustainable development and management of resources and restoration of damaged ecosystems.

The Paq'tnkek Mi'kmaq And Ka't (American Eel): A Case Study Of Cultural Relations, Meanings And Prospects, Anthony A. Davis Dr,, John Wagner Dr., Kerry Prosper, Mary Jane Paulette
Anthony A. Davis Dr,
In September 1999 the Supreme Court of Canada, in R. v Marshall, affirmed that Atlantic Canada’s Mi’kmaq First Nation possessed a treaty-based right to derive a modest livelihood from commercial fisheries. This ruling has altered the fisheries’ political, social and economic landscape permanently. In so doing, it has positioned the Mi’kmaq and other Canadian First Nations to assume a leadership role in reshaping natural resource management policies and priorities. In this essay we first review the ways and means that R. v Marshall has been implemented, with a view to clarifying the current position of the Mi’kmaq within Atlantic Canadian …

Tautology And Coercion In Assertive Community Treatment (Act): The "Treatment Effect" Of Assertive Community Treatment Deconstructed., Tomi Gomory
Tomi Gomory
Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) has been identified as one of only six evidence-based practices for the severely mentally ill by federal, private foundation, and professional mental health experts. This article reviews the research of the inventors of ACT (the Madison Wisconsin ACT group) because their model is the criterion for all ACT replications. The focus is on the well known, but mysterious “disappearance” of ACT effect when ACT “interventions” cease. The analysis concludes provocatively that there is no ACT clinical effect in the first place. What actually is measured by these researchers and claimed incorrectly as “clinical” treatment effect is …

Entering And Succeeding In The “Culture Of College”: The Story Of Two Mexican Heritage Students, Nolan L. Cabrera, Amado M. Padilla
Nolan L. Cabrera
In this retrospective study, the academic resilience of two individuals of Mexican heritage who graduated from Stanford University is described. The respondents (a woman and a man) now in their early 20s came from home backgrounds of extreme impoverishment and adversity. By means of in-depth interviews the challenges the two respondents faced in school beginning in kindergarten and continuing through their graduation from Stanford is described. Both respondents attribute their academic success to the support given them by their mothers and their personal motivation to succeed in school; however, the authors show that this was also possible because the respondents …
Cost Estimation When Time And Resources Are Limited: The Brief Datcap, Michael T. French, M. Christopher Roebuck, A. Thomas Mclellan
Cost Estimation When Time And Resources Are Limited: The Brief Datcap, Michael T. French, M. Christopher Roebuck, A. Thomas Mclellan
Michael T. French
The Drug Abuse Treatment Cost Analysis Program (DATCAP) was designed in the early 1990s as a research guide to collect and analyze financial data from addiction treatment programs. The addiction research community could clearly benefit from a version of the DATCAP that reduced the time and effort required for its administration without compromising the integrity of its cost estimates. This paper introduces the Brief DATCAP and presents some preliminary findings. Initial feedback from respondents suggests that the Brief DATCAP is understandable, and easier and quicker to complete than the DATCAP. More importantly, preliminary results indicate that cost estimates from the …

Homeless Shelter Use And Reincarceration Following Prison Release, Stephen Metraux, Dennis P. Culhane
Homeless Shelter Use And Reincarceration Following Prison Release, Stephen Metraux, Dennis P. Culhane
Dennis P. Culhane
This paper exmaines the incidence of and interrelationships between shelter use and reincarceration among a cohort of 48,424 persons who were released from New York State prisons to New York City in 1995-1998. Results show that, within two years of release, 11.4% of the study group was again imprisoned. Using survival analysis methods, time since prison release and history of residential instability were the most salient risk factors related to shelter use, and shelter use increased the risk of subsequent reincarcerations.

Race And Sexual Identity: Perceptions About Medical Culture And Healthcare Among Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, David J. Malebranche, John L. Peterson, Robert E. Fullilove, Richard W. Stackhouse
David J Malebranche
Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) in the United States are disproportionately affected by HIV. Using a qualitative approach, the authors describe the healthcare experiences of BMSM in New York State and Atlanta, GA, exploring the social issues that influence barriers to care, communication, and adherence in medical settings. Racial and sexual discrimination socially displace BMSM, and are often compounded by negative encounters within medical institutions. The internalization of these experiences influences healthcare utilization, HIV testing, communication, and adherence behaviors among members of this population. Increasing the number of ethnic and sexual minority providers, expanding current definitions of …
Men Of A Thousand Days: Death-Sentenced Inmates At Utah State Prison, Sandra Mcgunigall-Smith
Men Of A Thousand Days: Death-Sentenced Inmates At Utah State Prison, Sandra Mcgunigall-Smith
Sandy McGunigall-Smith
Studies of the pains of confinement and coping techniques have ignored the experiences of death-sentenced inmates, particularly those in the USA housed under the punitive regimes of supermax facilities. This research is a qualitative, mini-longitudinal study carried out between 1997 and 2001 which examines the particular pains of confinement for inmates in the supermax facility of Utah State Prison and how they coped with life under the sentence of death. The findings suggest that these inmates experienced different pains and utilized different coping techniques than those described in prison literature.
Modelling Dynamic Conditional Correlations In Wti Oil Forward And Futures Returns, Alessandro Lanza, Matteo Manera, Micheal Mcaleer
Modelling Dynamic Conditional Correlations In Wti Oil Forward And Futures Returns, Alessandro Lanza, Matteo Manera, Micheal Mcaleer
Matteo Manera
This paper estimates the dynamic conditional correlations in the returns on WTI oil onemonth forward prices, and one-, three-, six-, and twelve-month futures prices, using recently developed multivariate conditional volatility models. The dynamic correlations enable a determination of whether the forward and various futures returns are substitutes or complements, which are crucial for deciding whether or not to hedge against unforeseen circumstances. The models are estimated using daily data on WTI oil forward and futures prices, and their associated returns, from 3 January 1985 to 16 January 2004. At the univariate level, the estimates are statistically significant, with the occasional …

These are photographs of the presentation in Houston of Phi Beta Delta medallions to the Consuls General of Mexico and Indonesia, and the Chancellor of the University of Houston. I have always felt that we don't say thank you as much as we should, so honoring individuals is not a small thing. Too often the bulk of the honors go for athletic accomplishment. Students should see that civic and scholastic accomplishment also gets their kudos, which is why I have given time to the honor society movement.

52 Weekly Thoughts About Phi Beta Delta, Paul J. Rich
Paul J. Rich
The little book of weekly thoughts which I wrote for Phi Beta Delta fulfills a need for readings at chapter meetings and initiations. in the nineteenth century, a great deal was produced for fraternal use -- notably by the great ritualist Albert Pike. Certainly there were others, but since one aspect of rituals was a supposed antiquity, anonymity was often the way to give legitimacy. Authoring pieces for ritual is definitely a backwater of literature!
