Making Rights From What's Left Of Darwinism, Kirk W. Junker Dec 2003

Making Rights From What's Left Of Darwinism, Kirk W. Junker

Kirk W Junker

The legal, political, and social meaning of the work of Charles Darwin has been claimed as resident to conservative and liberal homes alike. Peter Singer’s unique admixture of personal liberal politics and what may look to be an extremely conservative philosophy of nature
expose some over-simplicity in traditional ‘right’ and ‘left’ categories. In ‘‘Recovering
the Left from Darwin in the 21st Century’’, Steve Fuller provides us with insightful historical
and sociological contexts for Singer’s challenges. In this article, Kirk Junker takes one aspect of the trajectory ‘the notion of natural rights’ and examines their social construction, linguistic maintenance, and legal …

Mapping Discriminatory Landscapes In A Divided Educational System: The Case Of Cyprus, Nicos Trimikliniotis Dec 2003

Mapping Discriminatory Landscapes In A Divided Educational System: The Case Of Cyprus, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper examines the way in which the Cyprus educational system, primarily concentrating on the Greek-Cypriot side, reproduces discriminatory patterns via an outmoded and ethnically divided educational model, in spite of some efforts to introduce multi-cultural elements of local level. Existing literature and a number of studies and reports on immigrant and minority students illustrate the need for further research on the subject, so that a comprehensive reform of the educational system can take place to move from an ethnocentric model towards a more critically orientated humanistic education based on tolerance and understanding – a matter of urgency if Cyprus …

The Problem Of Subject Access To Visual Materials, Kresten Jespersen, Heather Jespersen Dec 2003

The Problem Of Subject Access To Visual Materials, Kresten Jespersen, Heather Jespersen

Kresten Jespersen

This article discusses the problem of giving subject access to works of art. We survey both concept-based and content-based access by computers and by indexers/catalogers respectively, as well as issues of interoperability, database and indexer consistency, and cataloging standards. The authors, both of whom are trained art historians, question attempts to mystify fine art subject matter by the creation of clever library science systems that are executed by the naive. Only when trained art historians and knowledgeable catalogers are finally responsible for providing subject access to works of art, will true interoperability and consistency happen.

A Citation Analysis Of The Quantitative/Qualitative Methods Debate's Reflection In Sociology Research: Implications For Library Collection Development, Amanda J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D. Dec 2003

A Citation Analysis Of The Quantitative/Qualitative Methods Debate's Reflection In Sociology Research: Implications For Library Collection Development, Amanda J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

Mandy (Amanda) Swygart-Hobaugh

This study examines how the social sciences’ debate between qualitative and quantitative methods is reflected in the citation patterns of sociology journal articles. Citation analysis revealed that quantitative articles were more likely to cite journal articles than monographs, while qualitative articles were more likely to cite monographs than journals. Quantitative articles cited other articles from their own quantitative-dominated journals but virtually excluded citations to articles from qualitative journals, while qualitative articles cited articles from the quantitative-dominated journals as well as their own qualitative-specialized journals. Discussion and conclusions include this study’s implications for library collection development.

The Four Literatures Of Social Science, Diana M. Hicks Dec 2003

The Four Literatures Of Social Science, Diana M. Hicks

Diana Hicks

This chapter reviews bibliometric studies of the social sciences and humanities. SSCI bibliometrics will work reasonably well in economics and psychology whose literature shares many characteristics with science, and less well in sociology, characterized by a typical social science literature. The premise of the chapter is that quantitative evaluation of research output faces severe methodological difficulties in fields whose literature differs in nature from scientific literature. Bibliometric evaluations are based on international journal literature indexed in the SSCI, but social scientists also publish books, and write for national journals and for the non-scholarly press. These literatures form distinct, yet partially …

Irregular States, Or The Semiotics Of Knight-Errantry, Costas M. Constantinou Dec 2003

Irregular States, Or The Semiotics Of Knight-Errantry, Costas M. Constantinou

Costas M. Constantinou

This article examines the transformation of the Order of St John (also
known as the Knights of Malta) from a crusading and piratic entity (periodically in
Jerusalem, Cyprus, Rhodes and Malta) into an irregular state actor without territory
(in Rome). Specifically, it looks at the political rationales through which the Order
has been historically constituted as an international subject and currently enacted as
an ‘‘irregular state’’, and evaluates the function of international legal discourse in
making up for its missing territory, the supposedly ‘hard’ and ‘objective’ condition of
statehood under international law.

6. Educating The Public Through The Michael Jackson Case., Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

Many experts in child sexual abuse likely view the Michael Jackson molestation case with disgust. The case is colored by the media circus, the major players' motives for money and publicity, and the sometimes prurient, sometimes morbid fascination the public has with allegations they view as bizarre and improbable.

Takings Formalism And Regulatory Formulas: Exactions And The Consequences Of Clarity, Mark Fenster Dec 2003

Takings Formalism And Regulatory Formulas: Exactions And The Consequences Of Clarity, Mark Fenster

Mark Fenster

A vocal minority of the U.S. Supreme Court recently announced its suspicion that lower courts and state and local administrative agencies are systematically ignoring constitutional rules intended to limit, through heightened judicial review, exactions as a land use regulatory tool. Exactions are the concessions local governments require of property owners as conditions for the issuance of the entitlements that enable the intensified use of real property. In two cases decided over the past two decades, Nollan v. California Coastal Commission (1987) and Dolan v. City of Tigard (1994), the Court has established under the Takings Clause a logic and metrics …

The Contribution Of Business Services To Aggregate Productivity Growth, Henk Lm Kox Dec 2003

The Contribution Of Business Services To Aggregate Productivity Growth, Henk Lm Kox

Henk LM Kox

As in most OECD countries, the business services industry in the Netherlands has grown much faster than the market sector as a whole. It has, however, displayed stagnating productivity growth, in some periods even a fall in productivity. Does this fast-growing industry with a bad productivity record present a threat to aggregate productivity growth and, hence, to future economic growth? Reviewing existing empirical evidence, the paper argues that this concern need not be valid. The business services industry has an important role in the national innovation system and in knowledge spillovers to other industries. The innovation contribution of business services …

A Corpus Study On The Item-Based Nature Of Early Grammar Acquisition., Adam Hodges, Valerie Krugler, Deborah Law Dec 2003

A Corpus Study On The Item-Based Nature Of Early Grammar Acquisition., Adam Hodges, Valerie Krugler, Deborah Law

Adam Hodges

This paper explores the item-based nature of child language acquisition by examining data from the CHILDES database (MacWhinney 2000). Two studies are explicated: the first uses pooled data from several children, and the second follows a single child longitudinally. The results show that the learning of the complex construction consisting of a main clause followed by an infinitival compliment, e.g. I want to play, center around a single verb, want, even though other candidate verbs exist in the children’s vocabulary. We provide empirical evidence to show that children initially learn grammar via item-based units and gradually break down complex constructions …

Overall Specialization Empirics: Techniques And Applications, Luca De Benedictis, Massimo Tamberi Dec 2003

Overall Specialization Empirics: Techniques And Applications, Luca De Benedictis, Massimo Tamberi

Luca De Benedictis

It is customary in the empirical trade literature to analyze specialization patterns of countries using Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) measures. This paper explores the informational content of the most commonly used RCA index: the Balassa (1965) Index of RCA.

After describing the properties of the Balassa Index, we propose a research strategy based on descriptive statistics, kernel density estimation, concentration and Markov stationarity methods in order to analyze the dynamics of overall specialization.

The Ethical Dilemmas Of Communicating A University's Job Placement Rate: Legal Obligation Or Moral Responsibility, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Karen Hagans

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

The purpose of this research is to investigate one area of ethical concern in higher education, specifically the reporting of job placement rates. The research discovered such dramatic variations in the way job placement rates were calculated and reported that job placement data become suspect. The ethical concerns of reporting job placement data are discussed in relationship to institutional policies and practices and student expectations

Wheelchair Access In Star Lrt Stations In Kuala Lumpur, Zuraini Md Dali, Hazreena Hussein, Imaduddin Abdul Halim

Hazreena Hussein

Kuala Lumpur was honored to host the 1998 Commonwealth Games, the second largest game after the Olympics. Inline with this event, the Malaysian Government decided to upgrade the public transportation in the city to be accessible to all, mentioned by the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee. The rate and level of new investment will ensure that improvements in the accessibility of public transport are brought forward more rapidly. Building in accessibility for disabled persons in all new investment is a condition of public money being well spent. Local authorities and transport operators should ensure that the transport needs of disabled …

The Impact Of Innovation On Jobs, Skills And Wages, Mario Pianta Dec 2003

The Impact Of Innovation On Jobs, Skills And Wages, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

Unemployment, skill polarisation and growing wage inequality are major problems in advanced countries. Technological change - in particular the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) - has often been called into question as a factor in such labour market developments. This article investigates the impact innovation has on jobs, skills and wages, discussing the concepts for analysis, reviewing the evidence of major studies and providing recent empirical evidence for European countries.
