How should one combine stock and option markets in models of trade and asset price volatility? We address this question, paying particular attention to the identification of parameters of interest.
A Research Agenda For Economic Evaluation Of Substance Abuse Services, Michael T. French, M. C. Drummond
A Research Agenda For Economic Evaluation Of Substance Abuse Services, Michael T. French, M. C. Drummond
Michael T. French
Economic analyses of substance abuse interventions play a critical role in informing the decision makers involved in funding these programs. Despite the emergence of new and more effective interventions, the adoption of costlier services still demands justification based on economic evidence. Updated and more rigorous economic information allows patients, health care professionals, insurance companies, policymakers, and others to allocate scarce resources more efficiently. To prepare for the next wave of addiction health services research, this article presents background information on the economics of addiction health services, reviews recent empirical and methodological contributions, and provides 15 research recommendations.

Inferring Information Frequency And Quality, Douglas G. Steigerwald, John Owens
Inferring Information Frequency And Quality, Douglas G. Steigerwald, John Owens
Douglas G. Steigerwald
We develop a microstructure model that, in contrast to previous models, allows one to estimate the frequency and quality of private information. In addition, the model produces stationary asset price and trading volume series. We find evidence that information arrives frequently within a day and that this information is of high quality. The frequent arrival of information, while in contrast to previous microstructure model estimates, accords with nonmodel-based estimates and the related literature testing the mixture-of-distributions hypothesis. To determine if the estimates are correctly reflecting the arrival of latent information, we estimate the parameters over half-hour intervals within the day. …

Brief Physician Advice For Problem Drinking Among Older Adults: An Economic Analysis Of Costs And Benefits, Michael T. French, Marlon P. Mundt, M. Christopher Roebuck, Linda B. Manwell, Kristen L. Barry
Michael T. French
Objective: Problem alcohol use among elderly persons can have a variety of health-related consequences, complicating management of chronic illnesses and increasing health care utilization and costs. This study evaluates the economic cost and benefits of brief intervention for at-risk drinking older adults. Method: A controlled clinical trial with 24-month follow-up tested effectiveness of brief physician advice in reducing alcohol use, health care utilization and other consequences among older (age 65 or older) adult problem drinkers. Of 6,073 patients screened for problem drinking in 24 community-based primary care practices in Wisconsin, 158 patients met inclusion criteria and were randomized into control …

Hash Browns For Breakfast, Baked Potatoes For Dinner: Changes In Food Attitudes As A Function Of Motivation And Context, Stephen L. Crites, Shelley N. Aikman
Stephen L Crites Jr.
Two studies investigated whether participants' motivational state and the context in which attitude reports are made influence food attitudes. Specifically, these studies examined whether hunger and the time-typicality of foods (i.e. match or mismatch between the time when a food is typically eaten and the time the attitude is reported) interact to influence reported attitudes. Study 1 suggests that hunger leads to more positive attitudes toward foods that are typically eaten at the time the attitude report is made (e.g. breakfast foods in morning) compared to foods not typically eaten at the time the attitude report is made (e.g. breakfast …

United States Public Response To Terrorism: Fault Lines Or Bedrock?, Hank C. Jenkins-Smith, Kerry G. Herron
Hank C Jenkins-Smith
We test traditional assumptions about the volatility of mass opinion in times of national crises using data about views of terrorism from national surveys of the United States general public in 1995 and 1997, findings from a national survey immediately following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11), and panel data from a follow-up survey in 2002. We compare public assessments of the threat of terrorism, willingness to restrict speech to prevent terrorism, support for employing conventional military force against countries that support terrorism, and levels of certainty about culpability required prior to using military force. Results show stable …

Problematic Eating And Feeding Behaviors Of 36-Month Old Children, R H. Striegel, P M. Lewinsohn, J M. Holm-Denoma, J M. Gau, T E. Joiner Jr, P Bear, B Lamoureux
Ruth Striegel Weissman
Objective
To incorporate selected items from several existing instruments to create a comprehensive multi-factorial instrument to measure problematic eating behaviors in young children and to examine the prevalences and correlates of these behaviors.
Method
A community sample of young mothers (n = 93) completed the inventory of problematic eating behaviors for their 36-month old children.
Results
The most common child problems reported by mothers were the spitting out of food during feedings and becoming upset when food was restricted. A four-factor solution identified Pickiness (e.g., child eats a limited variety of food), Food Refusal (e.g., child refuses to eat specific …

Measuring Help-Seeking Intentions: Properties Of The General Help-Seeking Questionnaire, Coralie J. Wilson
Measuring Help-Seeking Intentions: Properties Of The General Help-Seeking Questionnaire, Coralie J. Wilson
Frank Deane
A clear understanding of help-seeking intentions and behavior is fundamental to the identification of factors that can be modified to facilitate young people’s help-seeking when they are psychologically distressed or suicidal. Despite considerable research on help-seeking intentions and behavior for personal-emotional or distressing problems, integrating prior research has been impeded by a lack of consistent and psychometrically sound help-seeking measures. The General Help-Seeking Questionnaire (GHSQ) was developed to formally assess two aspects of help-seeking: (1) current intentions to seek help from different sources for different problems; and (2) quantity and quality of previous professional psychological helping episodes. The current study …
