Reflecting On The Strategic Use Of Caqdas To Manage And Report On The Qualitative Research Process, Mark Wickham, Megan Woods Dec 2005

Reflecting On The Strategic Use Of Caqdas To Manage And Report On The Qualitative Research Process, Mark Wickham, Megan Woods

The Qualitative Report

As an increasing number of researchers have been trained to u s e programs such as Atlas/ti, NUD*IST, Nvivo, and ETHNOGRAPH their value in analyzing qualitative data has gained greater recognition. Drawing on the experience of two PhD candidates at the University of Tasmania, this paper reflects upon some potential uses of a suite of computer software programs to make the research and analysis process more logical and transparent. In addition, this paper argues for the introduction of a Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Protocol to give readers of the research report a better understanding of the analysis process undertaken …

African American Parents’ Perceptions Of An American Deaf Community: Where’S The Poetic Justice?, Valerie Borum Dec 2005

African American Parents’ Perceptions Of An American Deaf Community: Where’S The Poetic Justice?, Valerie Borum

The Qualitative Report

Poetic prose, a creative qualitative technique, is used to present the findings (emerging themes) of in-depth, thematic interviews with 14 African American parents with deaf children. This is presented in a multi- vocal, interactive, and interwoven style. This style of interweaving voices of participants in a creative poetic prose is indicative of African American cultural and oral traditions. It also permits and deepens the reader’s ability to emotionally and spiritually connect with experiences and emotions of African American parents and their perceptions of an American deaf community. This research was conducted using a modified grounded theory approach where theory (grand …

Research Paradigms And Meaning Making: A Primer, Steven Eric Krauss Dec 2005

Research Paradigms And Meaning Making: A Primer, Steven Eric Krauss

The Qualitative Report

An introduction and explanation of the epistemological differences of quantitative and qualitative research paradigms is first provided, followed by an overview of the realist philosophical paradigm, which attempts to accommodate the two. From this foundational discussion, the paper then introduces the concept of meaning ma king in research methods and looks at how meaning is generated from qualitative data analysis specifically. Finally, some examples from the literature of how meaning can be constructed and organized using a qualitative data analysis approach are provided. The paper aims to provide an introduction to research methodologies, coupled with a discussion on how meaning …

Menopause And Methodological Doubt, Sheila Spence Dec 2005

Menopause And Methodological Doubt, Sheila Spence

The Qualitative Report

Menopause and methodological doubt be gins by making a tongue-in- cheek comparison between Descartes' methodological doubt and the self- doubt that can arise around menopause. A hermeneutic approach is taken in which Cartesian dualism and its implications for the way women are viewed in society are examined, both through the experiences of women undergoing menopause and through the commentary of several contributors in Feminist Interpretations of Réné Descartes by Susan Bordo (1999). This examination is located inside the story of the paper, which was written over the duration of a university hermeneutics course, and reflects the author's evolving understanding of …

“Hay Sacks Anonymous”: Living In The Shadow Of The Unidentified. Psychological Aspect S Of Physical Inactivity From A Phenomenological Perspective, Anni Bergman, Torsten Norlander Dec 2005

“Hay Sacks Anonymous”: Living In The Shadow Of The Unidentified. Psychological Aspect S Of Physical Inactivity From A Phenomenological Perspective, Anni Bergman, Torsten Norlander

The Qualitative Report

The present qualitative study emanates from a phenomenological perspective and has the purpose of creating an understanding for what a so-called “hay sack” is as well as understanding the experiences of a hay sack. In this context a hay sack refers to a person with low physical activity. Eight hay sacks between 36-58 years of age were interviewed about their experiences. Karlsson’s (1995) EPP-method was used. The analysis resulted in 13 categories. A hay sack wants to, but is unable to engage in regular physical activity as a consequence of something unidentified, possibly a psychological barrier. Being a hay sack …

Do Research Thesis Examiners Need Training?: Practitioner Stories, Shankar Sankaran, Pam Swepson, Geof Hill Dec 2005

Do Research Thesis Examiners Need Training?: Practitioner Stories, Shankar Sankaran, Pam Swepson, Geof Hill

The Qualitative Report

We are thesis examiners within the Australian academic system who formed a “community of practice” to try to resolve some of the issues we were facing. Stories of examiners reflecting on and examining their own practice are a notable silence in the higher degree research literature. In this study we have adopted a storytelling inquiry method that involved telling our practitioner stories, firstly to each other and then to a wider audience through this paper. We then identified issues that we believe are relevant to other thesis examiners. We have also found that engaging in a “community of practice” is …

An Ethnographic-Case Study Of Beliefs, Context Factors, And Practices Of Teachers Integrating Technology, Julie Angers, Krisanna L. Machtmes Dec 2005

An Ethnographic-Case Study Of Beliefs, Context Factors, And Practices Of Teachers Integrating Technology, Julie Angers, Krisanna L. Machtmes

The Qualitative Report

This ethnographic-case study explored the beliefs, context factors, and practices of three middle school exemplary teachers that led to a technology-enriched curriculum. Findings suggest that these middle school teachers believe technology is a tool that adds value to lessons and to students learning and motivation. Due to a personal interest in technology, these teachers are self-taught and apply for grants to acquire new hardware and software. They receive support for release time to continue with ongoing professional development, which has helped to change their teaching strategies from teacher-centered to student-centered. They are not afraid to take risk using trial and …

Autism And Parental Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Adequacy Of Resources, Geneeta Kaliah Chambers Dec 2005

Autism And Parental Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Adequacy Of Resources, Geneeta Kaliah Chambers

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The goal of the present study was to expand on the existing literature exploring families with children who have developmental disabilities, particularly autism. Previous studies have been constrained by univariate approaches that have failed to adequately capture the nuances of family functioning. Using an ecological/context approach, stemming from an ongoing research program conducted within a university-based treatment center, the present study attempted to improve on the conceptualization of interrelationships among family members and the role that contextual factors play within that dynamic. Specifically, the present study explored the influence of children’s level of autism on parents’ reports of their marital …

Reviewing Workplace Bullying: Strengthening Approaches To A Complex Phenomenon, Diana J. Kelly Dec 2005

Reviewing Workplace Bullying: Strengthening Approaches To A Complex Phenomenon, Diana J. Kelly

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Workplace bullying is a growing problem which is costly for organisations and individual targets. The costs for organisations include loss of productivity and increased insurance costs, as rising stress claims generate rises in premiums. Measuring the costs to individuals or the ethical capital of an organisation is much more difficult but just as important. This paper seeks to understand the research practices in bullying in order to identify potential needs for research and practice. After examining the nature and extent of workplace bullying, approaches to bullying are surveyed, revealing how different disciplines and professions investigate workplace bullying. The importance of …

Diasporic Spectrality: Minorities & Cultural Assertions In Canada, Australia And Beyond, Gerry Turcotte, Gaetano Rando Dec 2005

Diasporic Spectrality: Minorities & Cultural Assertions In Canada, Australia And Beyond, Gerry Turcotte, Gaetano Rando

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

This paper provides a critical introduction to a special issue of Australian Canadian Studies 23(2) 2005 - "Diasporic Spectrality: Minorities and cultural Assertions in Canada, Australia and Beyond" - guestedited by Gerry Turcotte and Gaetano Rando. The paper discusses the selection of papers that produced a coherent, though not uniform, picture of minority interests that examine the complex ways culture is “asserted” in contemporary times, primarily in the Canadian context, but understood within the larger story of migration, plurality and diaspora. As we worked through the contributions we found not only that they represented a wide variety of fields — …

Sequential Equilibria In Bayesian Games With Communication, Dino Gerardi, Roger B. Myerson Dec 2005

Sequential Equilibria In Bayesian Games With Communication, Dino Gerardi, Roger B. Myerson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study the effects of communication in Bayesian games when the players are sequentially rational but some combinations of types have zero probability. Not all communication equilibria can be implemented as sequential equilibria. We define the set of strong sequential equilibria (SSCE) and characterize it. SSCE differs from the concept of sequential communication equilibrium (SCE) defined by Myerson (1986) in that SCE allows the possibility of trembles by the mediator. We show that these two concepts coincide when there are three or more players, but the set of SSCE may be strictly smaller than the set of SCE for two-player …

Testing Linearity In Cointegrating Relations With An Application To Purchasing Power Parity, Seung Hyun Hong, Peter C.B. Phillips Dec 2005

Testing Linearity In Cointegrating Relations With An Application To Purchasing Power Parity, Seung Hyun Hong, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops a linearity test that can be applied to cointegrating relations. We consider the widely used RESET specification test and show that when this test is applied to nonstationary time series its asymptotic distribution involves a mixture of noncentral chi-squared distributions, which leads to severe size distortions in conventional testing based on the central chi-squared. Nonstationarity is shown to introduce two bias terms in the limit distribution, which are the source of the size distortion in testing. Appropriate corrections for this asymptotic bias leads to a modified version of the RESET test which has a central chi-squared limit …

The Response Of Prices, Sales, And Output To Temporary Changes In Demand, Adam Copeland, George J. Hall Dec 2005

The Response Of Prices, Sales, And Output To Temporary Changes In Demand, Adam Copeland, George J. Hall

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We determine empirically how the Big Three automakers accommodate shocks to demand. They have the capability to change prices, alter labor inputs through temporary layoffs and overtime, or adjust inventories. These adjustments are interrelated, non-convex, and dynamic in nature. Combining weekly plant-level data on production schedules and output with monthly data on sales and transaction prices, we estimate a dynamic profit-maximization model of the firm. Using impulse response functions, we demonstrate that when an automaker is hit with a demand shock sales respond immediately, prices respond gradually, and production responds only after a delay. The size of the immediate sales …

Grading In Games Of Status: Marking Exams And Setting Wages, Pradeep Dubey, John Geanakoplos Dec 2005

Grading In Games Of Status: Marking Exams And Setting Wages, Pradeep Dubey, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We introduce grading into games of status. Each player chooses effort, producing a stochastic output or score. Utilities depend on the ranking of all the scores. By clustering scores into grades, the ranking is coarsened, and the incentives to work are changed. We first apply games of status to grading exams. Our main conclusion is that if students care primarily about their status (relative rank) in class, they are often best motivated to work not by revealing their exact numerical exam scores (100,99,…,1), but instead by clumping them into coarse categories ( A,B,C ). When student abilities are disparate, the …

Equity Vs Excellence : A Preliminary Exploration Of Hong Kong's Education Reform, Anita, Y.K. Poon, Yiu Chung Wong Dec 2005

Equity Vs Excellence : A Preliminary Exploration Of Hong Kong's Education Reform, Anita, Y.K. Poon, Yiu Chung Wong

CAPS Working Paper Series

Although Hong Kong 's education system has long been criticized as lacking in creativity and putting too much emphasis on rote learning, on the whole it has served Hong Kong well in the past in that it has bred outstanding business, academic and po1itical leaders who maintained the competitive edge of Hong Kong. The traditional elite schools played a most important role in the process. The education reform, which is still on going, aims to overhaul the entire system by introducing the “through-road” model through changing the existing admission mechanism of Primary 1 and Secondary 1 students, combining different bandings …

Do Aid Donors Reward Institutional Reforms?: A Panel Study On Aid-Receiving Countries, Wairimu R. Mugo Dec 2005

Do Aid Donors Reward Institutional Reforms?: A Panel Study On Aid-Receiving Countries, Wairimu R. Mugo

Economics Theses

Foreign aid is an important component of financial flows to many developing countries. This study seeks to investigate how foreign aid flows are influenced by two factors: the gross domestic products (GDP) per capita of the recipient countries, and changes in institutional and economic factors. For example, do increases in the GDP per capita of recipient countries attract more foreign aid in support of the on going economic and institutional reforms, or does this send a signal to the donors that these countries are doing well, and do not need as much aid? The question is whether aid donors reward …
